Meaning of ARE YOU KIDDING ME? - A Really Short English Lesson with Subtitles

So in English when we use the phrase, "Are you kidding me?", it is usually in response

to someone sharing some news with us that we don't quite believe or that we doubt a

little bit.

Maybe your cousin has just called you and he says to you, "I just won a million dollars

in the lottery!"

You might respond with, "Are you kidding me?"

Basically saying, "That's great news but are you sure you won the lottery?

Are you kidding me?

I don't quite believe that that could be true!"

You might say this as well if maybe your mom calls and says, "Did you know that your cousin

Diane just had twin babies?"

You might respond by saying, "Are you kidding me?

Twins?

I don't believe it!"

So again you might use the phrase, "Are you kidding me?", to express a little bit of doubt

about some news that you have just received from someone.

We have another phrase that's very similar, and that phrase is, "You must be joking!",

and we use this in the same way.

So maybe a friend of yours has had their car stolen three times in one week.

When he tells you this, when he says, "Ah my car has been stolen three times in one

week!", we might respond by saying, "You must be joking!"

Basically expressing a little bit of doubt, expressing the fact that we don't quite believe

that something like that could happen to someone.

If my car got stolen three times in one week and returned to me and then stolen again I

think that I would be pretty angry.

So, anyways, if that happened I'm sure a lot of people would say to me, "You must be joking!"
