Meaning of UP FOR - A Really Short English Lesson with Subtitles

So if someone asks you in English if you're up for something, it means they're asking

if you want to do something.

So you might call your friend and say, "Hey, are you up for a movie tonight?"

And that would be the same as asking your friend if they want to go see a movie tonight.

Sometimes Jen will say to me, "Hey, are you up for a trip to the grocery store?

We need to get a few things," and I'll say, "Sure."

And basically what Jen is asking me is if I want to go to the grocery store with her.

So when you ask someone in English if they are up for something, you're basically saying,

"Do you want to do it?"

A lot of times I'll be saying to my students, "Hey, are you guys up for some homework tonight?"

And they usually say no, because most of the time students don't want to do homework.

So usually they're up for me letting them out of class early, but they're usually not

up for homework.

It's just not something that they like.

So we have another way to ask someone if they are up for something, and that's to say to

them, "What are you up to tonight?"

So sometimes my friend will call me and he'll say, "Hey.

What are you up to tonight?

I'm going out, and I'm wondering if you want to come with," so when you ask someone what

they are up to, you're basically asking what they are currently doing at the moment.

And then usually you ask them if they're up for doing something else.

So "What are you up to?"

means "What are you doing?" and "Are you up for doing something?"

means "Do you want to do something?"
