Meaning of THIS ROCKS and THAT ROCKS - A Short English Lesson with Subtitles

- So yesterday we talked about the phrase, this sucks,

to talk about something that you don't enjoy doing.

Well, there's another phrase,

another slang phrase in English,

or informal phrase, however you want to refer to it,

and that phrase is, this rocks.

Maybe you are sitting in a movie theater

and you are watching a movie with a friend

and it's a really good movie.

You could lean over to your friend and say, this rocks.

This movie rocks.

When you say something rocks in English,

it means that you think it is awesome.

So if you are watching a movie

and it's just a really cool movie you would say, this rocks.

Maybe you're on a rollercoaster

and you're halfway through the ride with a friend of yours

and it's a really, really fun rollercoaster.

You could lean over to your friend and say, this rocks.

This rollercoaster rocks.

So, when you say this rocks, you're saying

that whatever you are doing is awesome,

and you would use this phrase to tell someone else

that you think it is awesome.

Can you think of what the next phrase is going to be?

That rocks.

So, when someone is talking about something

that they have done and it sounds really, really fun

or really awesome and it's something you've done before,

you could agree with them and say, that rocks.

Maybe a friend of yours says,

I went parachuting the other day.

I like talking about parachuting,

I will never go parachuting.

Maybe your friend says, I went parachuting the other day.

You could say to them, wow, that rocks,

if you're someone who has parachuted before.

If you're someone who has jumped out of a plane

and you really liked it, when your friend tells you

that they went parachuting, you could say, that rocks.

So again, this sucks means you didn't like something,

this rocks means you do like it.

That rocks means you do like something

and that sucks means you didn't like something.
