Meaning of BY HEART - A Really Short English Lesson with Subtitles

So in English, when you know something by heart,

it means that you have it memorized.

It means that you can repeat the words and the sentences

without having to look at the original document

or the book that you learned it from.

When you learn things by heart,

it is a good way to learn a language.

In fact, you should probably think about

memorizing or learning by heart several English passages.

If you're currently reading an English book or novel,

I highly recommend that you

try to learn a paragraph by heart every other day or so.

Just write it out a few times

until you have it completely memorized

and you can repeat it to someone, or to yourself,

without having to look at the page or the book to do it.

So I hope that as you continue to learn English,

that you are learning things by heart.

It's just a good way to do things,

so you can use those words later in a conversation.

We also have the word verbatim.

When you repeat something that someone has said verbatim,

it means that you say it using the exact same words

as the person who original said it,

or maybe you've read a passage from a book

and you quote the book verbatim

the next time you are talking to someone.

You tell them word-for-word

exactly what you read in the book.

So when you quote something verbatim,

it means that you use exactly the same words

when you repeat it to someone.

So hopefully you're learning a lot of English,

and you know a lot of English words and phrases by heart,

that you have them memorized,

and hopefully, when you repeat them to someone,

you can repeat them verbatim.
