Learn the English Phrases, "my better half" and "to tie the knot" - An English Lesson with Subtitles

So Jen and I, my wife, Jen and I

have been married for over 20 years

and I sometimes refer to her as my better half.

This is a fairly common English phrase

that people who are in relationships

sometimes use for each other.

They'll say, you know, I'm gonna go out tonight

with my better half, we're going to go see a movie.

And it's just kind of a funny thing to say.

It's kind of fun to refer to yourself

and the person you are with as if you are a whole being

and that there are two halves

and you refer to one of the people as you're better half.

So again, you will hear this

if you watch English television or English movies,

you will hear people occasionally say things like,

have you seen my better half?

Or did you talk to my better half earlier today?

And when they say my better half,

they are simply referring to the other person

who is in the relationship.

So, my better half and I

made a video this morning, it's really long,

And in it we talked about marriage.

And one of the cool English phrases we use

when we talk about marriage is we say that we tie the knot.

So Jen and I tied the knot over 20 years ago.

We decided after dating for a few years

that we wanted to get married,

I proposed and we decided to tie the knot

and over 20 years ago we got married.

So, in a relationship,

sometimes you refer to the other person

in the relationship as your better half

and if you decide to get married,

sometimes we say that you have decided to tie the knot.
