Meaning of SLEEP THE DAY AWAY and TIME FLIES - A Short English Lesson with Subtitles

So young people sometimes go out late at night,

and then the next day, they sleep the day away.

In English, when we say that you sleep the day away,

it literally means that you sleep for most of the day.

So like I said, sometimes young people go out late.

Sometimes they get in late, and then the next day,

they sleep the day away.

Old people don't do this as much

as a result of staying out late,

but I know I do it when I am not feeling well.

So sometimes, when I am sick, I will take a sick day,

and then I will sleep the day away.

A few days ago, I actually wasn't feeling very well,

and so I just stayed home all day, and I had three naps.

Basically, I slept more that day than I did anything else,

so you could say that I slept the day away.

Notice I'm using the past tense.

So sometimes young people stay out late,

and the next day they sleep the day away.

Sometimes old people don't feel well,

and they sleep the day away.

When I take sick days every once in a while,

I'm always surprised because time flies.

I don't know if you have ever noticed this,

but sometimes, when you're not feeling well

and you take a sick day and you stay home from work,

before you know it, the day is over, because time flies.

In English, when we say that time flies,

we mean that time goes really, really quickly,

that time goes by really fast.

So to review, when you sleep the day away,

it literally means that you spend most of the day sleeping,

and when you say that time flies,

you mean that time passes a lot more quickly

than you were expecting it to.

Usually time flies when you're having fun.
