Meaning of ALL BARK AND NO BITE and TO LET THE CAT OUT OF THE BAG - A Short English Lesson

So this morning, I did an English lesson

on my other YouTube channel about pets,

so I thought I should teach you some phrases

related to that topic.

The first phrase, all bark and no bite

refers to, first of all, a dog.

Sometimes you have a dog that barks a lot,

goes woof, woof, woof a lot.

(laughs) That's my dog impression.

But if you were to approach that dog, it wouldn't bite you,

so you hear a lot of noise, but you don't need to be afraid

because the dog won't bite.

We do use this phrase also to describe people.

There are some people who are all bark and no bite,

so they are someone who complains a lot,

someone who makes a big deal out of something,

but if you were actually to talk to them about it,

they're more talk than they are action, okay?

So they are more likely to complain about something

than they are to work hard to make it better

or to change things.

So if you're all bark and no bite,

you make a lot of noise, but not a lot of action.

The other phrase is the phrase

to let the cat out of the bag,

and this is a phrase we use when you tell a secret

that you're not supposed to tell.

Maybe someone is planning to have a surprise party,

and you accidentally tell the person who the party is for

that they are having, someone is having a party for them.

We would say that you let the cat out of the bag

in that situation.
