Meaning of SOCIAL DISTANCING and SELF-ISOLATION - A Short English Lesson with Subtitles

Well I'm not sure what it's like

in your part of the world,

but in my part of Canada, things are starting to shut down.

Our government has told us that schools

will be closed in Ontario,

no gatherings of more than 250 people,

so a lot of things in this part of Canada,

in Ontario Canada, will be slowing down.

We will be practicing social distancing,

so as you're learning English,

sometimes in English we have new phrases,

this is a new phrase for me,

social distancing is when

you just spend less time with other people.

So we are planning to just stay home a lot

for the next few weeks,

to help slow down the spread of this virus,

we are going to be practicing social distancing,

as many other Canadians,

and other people around the world will be doing.

We'll spend time, Jen and I will spend time with each other,

and time with the kids,

and hopefully we'll have some fun camping out.

If people do get sick though, they practice something else,

which is a relatively new term for me as well,

and that's the term self-isolation.

So this is for people who are sick with the COVID-19 virus,

they would self-isolate,

or they would practice self-isolation.

This means they would stay in their homes,

they would not go out until they are done being sick,

and until they are completely healthy again,

so once again, in Ontario, Canada,

we are now practicing social distancing,

we are trying to not to interact

with too many other people on a daily basis,

and for those who are becoming sick,

there are not a lot of cases yet in Canada,

I think we are just over 100,

I think there's about 70 in the province of Ontario,

but we are practicing self-isolation if we are sick.

I'm not sick yet, my family's not sick yet.

So we're simply going to stay home,

and enjoy each others company, while we wait the thing out.
