Learn the English Phrases COME AS NO SURPRISE and BLOWN AWAY - An English Lesson with Subtitles

So I went out to the lake today

to shoot part of my new English lesson video

that'll be on YouTube tomorrow,

and it was so windy, I could hardly

make a video out by the lake.

And that should've come as no surprise to me.

When you say in English

that something should have come as no surprise,

it means that I should've predicted this.

It means I should have known.

It means that I should not have thought

I could go out to the lake on a spring day

in Ontario, Canada and expect it to be nice and calm.

So it should have come as no surprise

that when I got to the lake it was super windy,

the waves were splashing against the shore,

and I could make a little bit of a video there,

but not as much as I had wanted to.

Again, have a look tomorrow when my big video goes up.

But if something comes as no surprise,

or if you say it came as no surprise,

it means that you should have predicted it,

but maybe you didn't.

The other phrase I wanted to talk about

is the phrase blown away,

because when I was out by the lake

I was just blown away by the size of the waves.

So that means that I trouble believing

how big the waves were.

I was blown away by the size of the waves.

And in a literal sense, I was almost blown away

by the force of the winds.

So again, in English, if you say that something

comes as no surprise, it means that you get somewhere

or you go to do something and you are a little surprised,

but it should not have been a surprise.

You should have been able to predict it.

And if you are blown away,

it means that you think something is amazing

and you think that it's cool

and you are just in awe of it.

And then literally, if the wind blows really hard,

you can get blown away as well.
