I often get asked about the difference between 'will' and 'would'.

So, in this lesson, we're going to compare the usage of 'will' and 'would' in different contexts.

Now, let's begin our lesson by looking at the five common uses of 'will'.

The first use of 'will' is for future possibility. For example:

O primeiro uso de 'vontade' é para possibilidade futura. Por exemplo:

Perhaps we will meet again.

Talvez nos encontremos novamente.

Make sure when you speak that you use the contraction:

Certifique-se de que, ao falar, use a contração:

Perhaps we'll meet again.

Talvez nos encontremos novamente.

The second use of 'will' is for future prediction. For example:

O segundo uso de 'vontade' é para previsão futura. Por exemplo:

I think she'll be pleased with the results.

acho que ela ficará satisfeita com os resultados.

The third use of 'will' is for making an instant decision, usually in a dialogue.

O terceiro uso de 'vontade' é para tomar uma decisão instantânea, geralmente em um diálogo.

For example, someone says: I'm too tired to cook tonight. Don't worry! I'll put something together.

Por exemplo, alguém diz: estou muito cansado para cozinhar esta noite. Não se preocupe! Eu vou combinar algo.

Notice that again the contraction is the most appropriate in a conversation.

Observe que novamente a contração é a mais apropriada em uma conversa.

The fourth use of 'will' is for promising. For example:

O quarto uso de 'will' é para prometer. Por exemplo:

I assure you this will never happen again.

garanto que isso nunca mais acontecerá.

In this situation, we usually use the full form because we want to stress.

Nessa situação, geralmente usamos o formulário completo porque queremos enfatizar.

This will never happen again. Or: I will never do this again.

Isso nunca vai acontecer de novo. Ou: nunca farei isso de novo.

For these four functions 'would' never replaces 'will'.

Para essas quatro funções, 'would' nunca substitui 'will'.

Except in the reported or indirect speech. For example, we would say:

Exceto no discurso relatado ou indireto. Por exemplo, diríamos:

He reassured me that that would never happen again.

Ele me garantiu que isso nunca mais aconteceria.

And the fifth use of 'will' is for making a request.

E o quinto uso de 'vontade' é para fazer um pedido.

For example: Will you open the window please?

Por exemplo: abra a janela por favor?

Notice that this is an informal request.

Observe que este é um pedido informal.

In this case, you can use 'would' instead of 'will' to make it a more formal request.

Nesse caso, você pode usar 'would' em vez de 'will' para fazer uma solicitação mais formal.

Would you open the window please?

Você abriria a janela, por favor?

So, that's the first use of 'would'.

Então, esse é o primeiro uso de 'would'.

Now, let's look at the second use of 'would'.

Agora, vamos ver o segundo uso de 'would'.

It's again in the context of politeness.

É novamente no contexto de polidez.

For example, instead of saying: I want.

Por exemplo, em vez de dizer: eu quero.

Like: I want a glass of water.

Tipo: eu quero um copo d'água.

You should say: I'd like or even I'd love a glass of water.

Você deve dizer: eu gostaria ou até mesmo adoraria um copo d'água.

Instead of I recommend, you could say: I'd recommend.

Em vez de eu recomendo, você poderia dizer: eu recomendo.

Or instead of I prefer, you could say: I'd prefer or even I'd rather.

Ou em vez de eu prefiro, você poderia dizer: eu prefiro ou até mesmo eu prefiro.

Make sure you use the contraction when you speak.

Certifique-se de usar a contração ao falar.

And the third use of 'would' is an alternative to the expression 'used to'

E o terceiro uso de 'would' é uma alternativa à expressão 'used to'

for habits and repetitive actions in the past.

para hábitos e ações repetitivas no passado.

For example, you can say: When I was growing up we would go to Spain every summer.

Por exemplo, você pode dizer: Quando eu era criança, íamos para a Espanha todo verão.

That means we used to go to Spain every summer.

Isso significa que costumávamos ir à Espanha todo verão.

Now, make sure you don't use 'would' for a fact in the past.

Agora, certifique-se de não usar 'would' para um fato no passado.

For example, don't say: When I was growing up we would live in a flat.

Por exemplo, não diga: Quando eu era criança, morávamos em um apartamento.

In this situation, you can only use 'used to'.

Nesta situação, você só pode usar 'used to'.

When I was growing up we used to live in a flat.

Quando eu era criança, morávamos em um apartamento.

Right! Let's now look at 'will' and 'would' in conditional sentences.

Certo! Vejamos agora 'will' e 'would' em sentenças condicionais.

This is where things can start to get a little confusing.

É aqui que as coisas podem começar a ficar um pouco confusas.

In conditional 1 we use 'will'. For example: If I have time tonight, I will finish my assignment.

Na condicional 1 usamos 'will'. Por exemplo: Se eu tiver tempo hoje à noite, terminarei minha tarefa.

There is a high probability that you will have time.

Há uma grande probabilidade de você ter tempo.

Now, in conditional 2 sentences, where the situation is hypothetical, we use 'would':

Agora, em 2 sentenças condicionais, onde a situação é hipotética, usamos 'would':

If I had time tonight, I would finish my assignment.

Se eu tivesse tempo esta noite, eu terminaria minha tarefa.

This means that you have a low probability to have time tonight.

Isso significa que você tem uma probabilidade baixa de ter tempo hoje à noite.

We also use 'would' in the third conditional, which is the impossible conditional.

Também usamos 'would' na terceira condicional, que é a condicional impossível.

If I had had time last night, I would have finished my assignment.

Se eu tivesse tido tempo ontem à noite, teria terminado minha tarefa.

So let's look at a couple of common mistakes that happen with these conditional sentences.

Vejamos alguns erros comuns que acontecem com essas sentenças condicionais.

The first one is starting with a conditional 1 if clause,

O primeiro é começar com uma cláusula if condicional 1

and then using 'would' in the consequence clause.

e, em seguida, usar 'would' na cláusula de consequência.

For example, saying: If I have time tonight, I would finish my assignment.

Por exemplo, dizendo: Se eu tiver tempo hoje à noite, terminarei minha tarefa.

Because you're mixing the two conditionals, your listener will be confused.

Como você está misturando as duas condicionais, seu ouvinte ficará confuso.

Is it likely that you will have time tonight or is it unlikely?

É provável que você tenha tempo esta noite ou é improvável?

So, if you say: If I have time tonight, which means it is likely  it is probable that you will have time tonight,

Portanto, se você disser: Se eu tiver tempo hoje à noite, o que significa que é provável que você tenha tempo hoje à noite,

make sure you will finish with 'will'.

certifique-se de terminar com 'vontade'.

I will finish my assignment.

Vou terminar minha tarefa.

The second mistake is to use 'will' or 'would' in the 'if clause'.

O segundo erro é usar 'will' ou 'would' na 'cláusula if'.

After 'if'.

Depois de 'se'.

For example, saying: If I will have time tonight, I will finish my assignment.

Por exemplo, dizendo: Se eu tiver tempo esta noite, terminarei minha tarefa.

Make sure you don't use 'will' in the first part.

Certifique-se de não usar 'will' na primeira parte.

Or, you may make  the mistake of saying: If I would have time tonight, I would finish my assignment.

Ou você pode cometer  o erro de dizer: Se eu tivesse tempo hoje à noite, terminaria minha tarefa.

Again, do not use 'would' after 'if'.

Novamente, não use 'would' depois de 'if'.

The correct second conditional sentence is: If I had time tonight, I would finish my assignment.

A segunda frase condicional correta é: Se eu tivesse tempo esta noite, terminaria minha tarefa.

But, as always, there is one exception.

Mas, como sempre, há uma exceção.

And that is if you want to be polite when you're using a conditional 1 sentence.

Isso se você quiser ser educado ao usar uma frase condicional 1.

For example, you can say to someone who's visiting you:

Por exemplo, você pode dizer a alguém que está visitando você:

If you would like to take a seat, I'll let my colleague know you're here.

Se você quiser se sentar, avisarei meu colega de que você está aqui.

Or, you can say: If you'll follow me please, I'll show you around the premises.

Ou você pode dizer: Se você me seguir, por favor, vou lhe mostrar as instalações.
