I often get asked about the difference between 'will' and 'would'.

「will」と「would」の違いについてよく聞かれます。

So, in this lesson, we're going to compare the usage of 'will' and 'would' in different contexts.

そこで、このレッスンでは 、さまざまな文脈での「will」と「would」の使い方を比較します。

Now, let's begin our lesson by looking at the five common uses of 'will'.

それでは、「will」の 5 つの一般的な用法を見てレッスンを始めましょう。

The first use of 'will' is for future possibility. For example:

「will」の最初の用法は、将来の可能性を表します。 例：

Perhaps we will meet again.

また会うかもしれません。

Make sure when you speak that you use the contraction:

話すときは、短縮形を使用していることを確認してください

Perhaps we'll meet again.

。また会いましょう。

The second use of 'will' is for future prediction. For example:

「will」の 2 番目の用法は、将来の予測です。 例:

I think she'll be pleased with the results.

彼女は結果に満足すると思います。

The third use of 'will' is for making an instant decision, usually in a dialogue.

「will」の 3 番目の用法は、通常は対話の中で即座に決定を下すことです。

For example, someone says: I'm too tired to cook tonight. Don't worry! I'll put something together.

たとえば、誰かが言う: 疲れすぎて今夜は料理ができません。 心配しないで！ 何とかまとめます。

Notice that again the contraction is the most appropriate in a conversation.

繰り返しますが、会話では短縮形が最も適切であることに注意してください。

The fourth use of 'will' is for promising. For example:

「will」の 4 番目の用法は、約束することです。 例:

I assure you this will never happen again.

このようなことが二度と起こらないことを保証します。

In this situation, we usually use the full form because we want to stress.

このような状況では、強調したいので、通常は完全な形を使用します。

This will never happen again. Or: I will never do this again.

これは二度と起こりません。 または: もう二度としない。

For these four functions 'would' never replaces 'will'.

これらの 4 つの機能では、「would」が「will」に置き換わることはありません。

Except in the reported or indirect speech. For example, we would say:

報告された、または間接的なスピーチを除きます。 たとえば、次のように言います。

He reassured me that that would never happen again.

彼は、そのようなことは二度と起こらないと私を安心させました。

And the fifth use of 'will' is for making a request.

「will」の 5 番目の用法は、リクエストを行うことです。

For example: Will you open the window please?

例: 窓を開けていただけますか？

Notice that this is an informal request.

これは非公式の要求であることに注意してください。

In this case, you can use 'would' instead of 'will' to make it a more formal request.

この場合、「will」の代わりに「would」を使用して、より正式なリクエストにすることができます。

Would you open the window please?

窓を開けていただけますか？

So, that's the first use of 'would'.

これが「would」の最初の用法です。

Now, let's look at the second use of 'would'.

では、「would」の 2 番目の用法を見てみましょう。

It's again in the context of politeness.

それは再び礼儀正しさの文脈にあります。

For example, instead of saying: I want.

たとえば、次のように言う代わりに: I want.

Like: I want a glass of water.

例：コップ一杯の水が欲しい。

You should say: I'd like or even I'd love a glass of water.

あなたは次のように言うべきです: 一杯の水が欲しいです。

Instead of I recommend, you could say: I'd recommend.

I'd recommend. の代わりに、I'd recommend. と言うことができます。

Or instead of I prefer, you could say: I'd prefer or even I'd rather.

または、I like の代わりに、I'd like または I'd rather と言うことができます。

Make sure you use the contraction when you speak.

話すときは必ず短縮形を使用してください。

And the third use of 'would' is an alternative to the expression 'used to'

また、「would」の 3 番目の用法は、過去の習慣や反復行動を表す「used to」という表現に代わる

for habits and repetitive actions in the past.

ものです。

For example, you can say: When I was growing up we would go to Spain every summer.

たとえば、次のように言えます。 私が子供の頃、毎年夏にスペインに行っていました。

That means we used to go to Spain every summer.

つまり、毎年夏にスペインに行っていたということです。

Now, make sure you don't use 'would' for a fact in the past.

ここで、過去の事実に対して「would」を使用しないように注意してください。

For example, don't say: When I was growing up we would live in a flat.

たとえば、次のようなことは言ってはいけません。私が子供の頃はフラットに住んでいました。

In this situation, you can only use 'used to'.

この場合、'used to' しか使えません。

When I was growing up we used to live in a flat.

私が子供の頃、私たちはフラットに住んでいました。

Right! Let's now look at 'will' and 'would' in conditional sentences.

右！ 次に、条件文の「will」と「would」を見てみましょう。

This is where things can start to get a little confusing.

ここから少し混乱し始める可能性があります。

In conditional 1 we use 'will'. For example: If I have time tonight, I will finish my assignment.

条件 1 では、'will' を使用します。 例 : 今夜時間があれば、宿題を終わらせます。

There is a high probability that you will have time.

時間がある可能性が高いです。

Now, in conditional 2 sentences, where the situation is hypothetical, we use 'would':

さて、状況が仮説である場合の条件付き 2 文では、 「would」を使用します。

If I had time tonight, I would finish my assignment.

もし今夜時間があれば、割り当てを終えることになるでしょう。

This means that you have a low probability to have time tonight.

これは、今夜の時間がある可能性が低いことを意味します。

We also use 'would' in the third conditional, which is the impossible conditional.

3 番目の条件文でも「would」を使用しますが、これは不可能な条件文です。

If I had had time last night, I would have finished my assignment.

昨夜時間があれば、宿題を終わらせたのに。

So let's look at a couple of common mistakes that happen with these conditional sentences.

それでは、これらの条件文でよくある間違いをいくつか見てみましょう 。

The first one is starting with a conditional 1 if clause,

1 つ目は、条件付きの 1 if 句で始まり

and then using 'would' in the consequence clause.

、結果句で「would」を使用しています。

For example, saying: If I have time tonight, I would finish my assignment.

例: 今夜時間があれば、宿題を終わらせます。

Because you're mixing the two conditionals, your listener will be confused.

2 つの条件を混合しているため、聞き手は混乱します。

Is it likely that you will have time tonight or is it unlikely?

今夜は時間がありますか、それともありそうにありませんか?

So, if you say: If I have time tonight, which means it is likely  it is probable that you will have time tonight,

したがって、あなたが「今夜時間があれば、それはあなたが今夜時間がある可能性が高いことを意味します」と言う場合は 、

make sure you will finish with 'will'.

必ず「意志」で締めくくってください。

I will finish my assignment.

課題を終わらせます。

The second mistake is to use 'will' or 'would' in the 'if clause'.

2 つ目の間違いは、「if 節」で「will」または「would」を使用することです。

After 'if'.

「もし」の後。

For example, saying: If I will have time tonight, I will finish my assignment.

例: 今夜時間があれば、宿題を終わらせます。

Make sure you don't use 'will' in the first part.

最初の部分で「will」を使用しないように注意してください。

Or, you may make  the mistake of saying: If I would have time tonight, I would finish my assignment.

または、「今夜時間があれば、課題を終わらせるのに」と言う間違いを犯すかもしれません 。

Again, do not use 'would' after 'if'.

繰り返しますが、「if」の後に「would」を使用しないでください。

The correct second conditional sentence is: If I had time tonight, I would finish my assignment.

正しい 2 番目の条件文は次のとおりです。 今夜時間があれば、課題を終わらせるでしょう。

But, as always, there is one exception.

ただし、いつものように、1 つの例外があります。

And that is if you want to be polite when you're using a conditional 1 sentence.

これは、条件付きの 1 文を使用しているときに礼儀正しくしたい場合です。

For example, you can say to someone who's visiting you:

たとえば、あなたを訪問している人に次のように言うことができます:

If you would like to take a seat, I'll let my colleague know you're here.

着席したい場合は、同僚にあなたがここにいることを知らせます.

Or, you can say: If you'll follow me please, I'll show you around the premises.

または、次のように言うこともできます: ついて来ていただければ、敷地内をご案内します。

Right! That brings us to the end of this lesson.
