I often get asked about the difference between 'will' and 'would'.

A menudo me preguntan sobre la diferencia entre 'will' y 'would'.

So, in this lesson, we're going to compare the usage of 'will' and 'would' in different contexts.

Now, let's begin our lesson by looking at the five common uses of 'will'.

Ahora, comencemos nuestra lección mirando los cinco usos comunes de 'voluntad'.

The first use of 'will' is for future possibility. For example:

El primer uso de 'voluntad' es para posibilidad futura. Por ejemplo:

Perhaps we will meet again.

Quizás nos volvamos a encontrar.

Make sure when you speak that you use the contraction:

Cuando hables, asegúrate de usar la contracción:

Perhaps we'll meet again.

Tal vez nos volvamos a encontrar.

The second use of 'will' is for future prediction. For example:

El segundo uso de 'voluntad' es para predicciones futuras. Por ejemplo:

I think she'll be pleased with the results.

creo que estará satisfecha con los resultados.

The third use of 'will' is for making an instant decision, usually in a dialogue.

El tercer uso de 'voluntad' es para tomar una decisión instantánea, generalmente en un diálogo.

For example, someone says: I'm too tired to cook tonight. Don't worry! I'll put something together.

Por ejemplo, alguien dice: Estoy demasiado cansado para cocinar esta noche. ¡No te preocupes! Armaré algo.

Notice that again the contraction is the most appropriate in a conversation.

Fíjate que de nuevo la contracción es la más apropiada en una conversación.

The fourth use of 'will' is for promising. For example:

El cuarto uso de 'voluntad' es para prometer. Por ejemplo:

I assure you this will never happen again.

te aseguro que esto nunca volverá a suceder.

In this situation, we usually use the full form because we want to stress.

En esta situación, solemos usar el formulario completo porque queremos enfatizar.

This will never happen again. Or: I will never do this again.

Esto nunca volverá a suceder. O: nunca volveré a hacer esto.

For these four functions 'would' never replaces 'will'.

Para estas cuatro funciones, 'would' nunca reemplaza a 'will'.

Except in the reported or indirect speech. For example, we would say:

Excepto en el estilo indirecto o indirecto. Por ejemplo, diríamos

He reassured me that that would never happen again.

: Me aseguró que eso nunca volvería a suceder.

And the fifth use of 'will' is for making a request.

Y el quinto uso de 'voluntad' es para hacer una solicitud.

For example: Will you open the window please?

Por ejemplo: ¿Puedes abrir la ventana, por favor?

Notice that this is an informal request.

Tenga en cuenta que esta es una solicitud informal.

In this case, you can use 'would' instead of 'will' to make it a more formal request.

En este caso, puede usar 'would' en lugar de 'will' para que sea una solicitud más formal.

Would you open the window please?

¿Abrirías la ventana, por favor?

So, that's the first use of 'would'.

Entonces, ese es el primer uso de 'would'.

Now, let's look at the second use of 'would'.

Ahora, veamos el segundo uso de 'would'.

It's again in the context of politeness.

Está de nuevo en el contexto de la cortesía.

For example, instead of saying: I want.

Por ejemplo, en lugar de decir: quiero.

Like: I want a glass of water.

Como: quiero un vaso de agua.

You should say: I'd like or even I'd love a glass of water.

Debes decir: me gustaría o incluso me encantaría un vaso de agua.

Instead of I recommend, you could say: I'd recommend.

En lugar de recomiendo, podrías decir: recomendaría.

Or instead of I prefer, you could say: I'd prefer or even I'd rather.

O en lugar de Prefiero, podrías decir: Preferiría o incluso Prefiero.

Make sure you use the contraction when you speak.

Asegúrate de usar la contracción cuando hables.

And the third use of 'would' is an alternative to the expression 'used to'

Y el tercer uso de 'would' es una alternativa a la expresión 'used to'

for habits and repetitive actions in the past.

para hábitos y acciones repetitivas en el pasado.

For example, you can say: When I was growing up we would go to Spain every summer.

Por ejemplo, puedes decir: Cuando yo era pequeño, íbamos a España todos los veranos.

That means we used to go to Spain every summer.

Eso significa que solíamos ir a España todos los veranos.

Now, make sure you don't use 'would' for a fact in the past.

Ahora, asegúrese de no usar 'would' para un hecho en el pasado.

For example, don't say: When I was growing up we would live in a flat.

Por ejemplo, no digas: Cuando yo era pequeño vivíamos en un piso.

In this situation, you can only use 'used to'.

En esta situación, solo puede usar 'used to'.

When I was growing up we used to live in a flat.

Cuando yo era niño, solíamos vivir en un piso.

Right! Let's now look at 'will' and 'would' in conditional sentences.

¡Derecho! Veamos ahora 'will' y 'would' en oraciones condicionales.

This is where things can start to get a little confusing.

Aquí es donde las cosas pueden empezar a ponerse un poco confusas.

In conditional 1 we use 'will'. For example: If I have time tonight, I will finish my assignment.

En el condicional 1 usamos 'will'. Por ejemplo: si tengo tiempo esta noche, terminaré mi tarea.

There is a high probability that you will have time.

Hay una alta probabilidad de que tengas tiempo.

Now, in conditional 2 sentences, where the situation is hypothetical, we use 'would':

Ahora, en 2 oraciones condicionales, donde la situación es hipotética, usamos 'would':

If I had time tonight, I would finish my assignment.

si tuviera tiempo esta noche, terminaría mi tarea.

This means that you have a low probability to have time tonight.

Esto significa que tiene pocas probabilidades de tener tiempo esta noche.

We also use 'would' in the third conditional, which is the impossible conditional.

También usamos 'would' en el tercer condicional, que es el condicional imposible.

If I had had time last night, I would have finished my assignment.

Si hubiera tenido tiempo anoche, habría terminado mi tarea.

So let's look at a couple of common mistakes that happen with these conditional sentences.

Entonces, veamos un par de errores comunes que ocurren con estas oraciones condicionales.

The first one is starting with a conditional 1 if clause,

El primero es comenzar con una cláusula condicional 1 if

and then using 'would' in the consequence clause.

y luego usar 'would' en la cláusula de consecuencia.

For example, saying: If I have time tonight, I would finish my assignment.

Por ejemplo, decir: Si tengo tiempo esta noche, terminaría mi tarea.

Because you're mixing the two conditionals, your listener will be confused.

Debido a que estás mezclando los dos condicionales, tu oyente se confundirá.

Is it likely that you will have time tonight or is it unlikely?

¿Es probable que tengas tiempo esta noche o es poco probable?

So, if you say: If I have time tonight, which means it is likely  it is probable that you will have time tonight,

Entonces, si dices: Si tengo tiempo esta noche, lo que significa que es probable que tengas tiempo esta noche,

make sure you will finish with 'will'.

asegúrate de terminar con 'voluntad'.

I will finish my assignment.

Terminaré mi tarea.

The second mistake is to use 'will' or 'would' in the 'if clause'.

El segundo error es usar 'will' o 'would' en la cláusula 'if'.

After 'if'.

Después de 'si'.

For example, saying: If I will have time tonight, I will finish my assignment.

Por ejemplo, decir: Si tengo tiempo esta noche, terminaré mi tarea.

Make sure you don't use 'will' in the first part.

Asegúrate de no usar 'will' en la primera parte.

Or, you may make  the mistake of saying: If I would have time tonight, I would finish my assignment.

O puede cometer el error de decir: si tuviera tiempo esta noche, terminaría mi tarea.

Again, do not use 'would' after 'if'.

Nuevamente, no use 'would' después de 'if'.

The correct second conditional sentence is: If I had time tonight, I would finish my assignment.

La segunda oración condicional correcta es: Si tuviera tiempo esta noche, terminaría mi tarea.

But, as always, there is one exception.

Pero, como siempre, hay una excepción.

And that is if you want to be polite when you're using a conditional 1 sentence.

Y eso es si quiere ser cortés cuando usa una oración condicional 1.

For example, you can say to someone who's visiting you:

Por ejemplo, puede decirle a alguien que lo está visitando:

If you would like to take a seat, I'll let my colleague know you're here.

si desea tomar asiento, le avisaré a mi colega que está aquí.

Or, you can say: If you'll follow me please, I'll show you around the premises.

O bien, puede decir: Si me sigue, por favor, le mostraré las instalaciones.

Right! That brings us to the end of this lesson.
