I often get asked about the difference between 'will' and 'would'.

So, in this lesson, we're going to compare the usage of 'will' and 'would' in different contexts.

Now, let's begin our lesson by looking at the five common uses of 'will'.

The first use of 'will' is for future possibility. For example:

Il primo uso di "volontà" è per possibilità future. Ad esempio:

Perhaps we will meet again.

forse ci incontreremo di nuovo.

Make sure when you speak that you use the contraction:

Assicurati quando parli di usare la contrazione:

Perhaps we'll meet again.

Forse ci incontreremo di nuovo.

The second use of 'will' is for future prediction. For example:

Il secondo uso di "will" è per la previsione futura. Ad esempio:

I think she'll be pleased with the results.

penso che sarà soddisfatta dei risultati.

The third use of 'will' is for making an instant decision, usually in a dialogue.

Il terzo uso di "volontà" è per prendere una decisione istantanea, di solito in un dialogo.

For example, someone says: I'm too tired to cook tonight. Don't worry! I'll put something together.

Ad esempio, qualcuno dice: sono troppo stanco per cucinare stasera. Non preoccuparti! Metterò insieme qualcosa.

Notice that again the contraction is the most appropriate in a conversation.

Nota che ancora una volta la contrazione è la più appropriata in una conversazione.

The fourth use of 'will' is for promising. For example:

Il quarto uso di "volontà" è per promettere. Ad esempio:

I assure you this will never happen again.

ti assicuro che questo non accadrà mai più.

In this situation, we usually use the full form because we want to stress.

In questa situazione, di solito usiamo la forma completa perché vogliamo sottolineare.

This will never happen again. Or: I will never do this again.

Questo non accadrà mai più. Oppure: non lo farò mai più.

For these four functions 'would' never replaces 'will'.

Per queste quattro funzioni "would" non sostituisce mai "will".

Except in the reported or indirect speech. For example, we would say:

Tranne nel discorso riportato o indiretto. Ad esempio, potremmo dire:

He reassured me that that would never happen again.

mi ha rassicurato che non sarebbe mai più successo.

And the fifth use of 'will' is for making a request.

E il quinto uso di "will" è per fare una richiesta.

For example: Will you open the window please?

Notice that this is an informal request.

Si noti che questa è una richiesta informale.

In this case, you can use 'would' instead of 'will' to make it a more formal request.

In questo caso, puoi utilizzare "would" invece di "will" per rendere la richiesta più formale.

Would you open the window please?

So, that's the first use of 'would'.

Now, let's look at the second use of 'would'.

It's again in the context of politeness.

For example, instead of saying: I want.

Like: I want a glass of water.

You should say: I'd like or even I'd love a glass of water.

Instead of I recommend, you could say: I'd recommend.

Or instead of I prefer, you could say: I'd prefer or even I'd rather.

Make sure you use the contraction when you speak.

And the third use of 'would' is an alternative to the expression 'used to'

E il terzo uso di 'would' è un'alternativa all'espressione 'used to'

for habits and repetitive actions in the past.

per le abitudini e le azioni ripetitive del passato.

For example, you can say: When I was growing up we would go to Spain every summer.

Ad esempio, puoi dire: quando ero piccolo andavamo in Spagna ogni estate.

That means we used to go to Spain every summer.

Ciò significa che andavamo in Spagna ogni estate.

Now, make sure you don't use 'would' for a fact in the past.

Ora, assicurati di non utilizzare "would" per un fatto del passato.

For example, don't say: When I was growing up we would live in a flat.

Ad esempio, non dire: Quando stavo crescendo, vivevamo in un appartamento.

In this situation, you can only use 'used to'.

In questa situazione, puoi usare solo 'used to'.

When I was growing up we used to live in a flat.

Quando stavo crescendo vivevamo in un appartamento.

Right! Let's now look at 'will' and 'would' in conditional sentences.

Giusto! Diamo ora un'occhiata a "will" e "would" nelle frasi condizionali.

This is where things can start to get a little confusing.

È qui che le cose possono iniziare a diventare un po' confuse.

In conditional 1 we use 'will'. For example: If I have time tonight, I will finish my assignment.

Nel condizionale 1 usiamo 'will'. Ad esempio: se ho tempo stasera, finirò il mio compito.

There is a high probability that you will have time.

C'è un'alta probabilità che tu abbia tempo.

Now, in conditional 2 sentences, where the situation is hypothetical, we use 'would':

Ora, nelle 2 frasi condizionali, dove la situazione è ipotetica, usiamo 'would':

If I had time tonight, I would finish my assignment.

se avessi tempo stasera, finirei il mio compito.

This means that you have a low probability to have time tonight.

Ciò significa che hai una bassa probabilità di avere tempo stasera.

We also use 'would' in the third conditional, which is the impossible conditional.

Usiamo anche 'would' nel terzo condizionale, che è il condizionale impossibile.

If I had had time last night, I would have finished my assignment.

Se avessi avuto tempo ieri sera, avrei finito il mio compito.

So let's look at a couple of common mistakes that happen with these conditional sentences.

The first one is starting with a conditional 1 if clause,

and then using 'would' in the consequence clause.

For example, saying: If I have time tonight, I would finish my assignment.

Ad esempio, dicendo: Se ho tempo stasera, finirei il mio compito.

Because you're mixing the two conditionals, your listener will be confused.

Is it likely that you will have time tonight or is it unlikely?

È probabile che tu abbia tempo stasera o è improbabile?

So, if you say: If I have time tonight, which means it is likely  it is probable that you will have time tonight,

Quindi, se dici: Se ho tempo stasera, il che significa che è probabile che tu abbia tempo stasera,

make sure you will finish with 'will'.

I will finish my assignment.

Finirò il mio incarico.

The second mistake is to use 'will' or 'would' in the 'if clause'.

Il secondo errore è usare 'will' o 'would' nella clausola 'if'.

After 'if'.

Dopo "se".

For example, saying: If I will have time tonight, I will finish my assignment.

Ad esempio, dicendo: Se avrò tempo stasera, finirò il mio compito.

Make sure you don't use 'will' in the first part.

Assicurati di non usare 'will' nella prima parte.

Or, you may make  the mistake of saying: If I would have time tonight, I would finish my assignment.

Oppure potresti commettere  l'errore di dire: se avessi tempo stasera, finirei il mio compito.

Again, do not use 'would' after 'if'.

Ancora una volta, non utilizzare "would" dopo "if".

The correct second conditional sentence is: If I had time tonight, I would finish my assignment.

La seconda frase condizionale corretta è: se avessi tempo stasera, finirei il mio compito.

But, as always, there is one exception.

Ma, come sempre, c'è un'eccezione.

And that is if you want to be polite when you're using a conditional 1 sentence.

E questo se vuoi essere educato quando usi una frase condizionale 1.

For example, you can say to someone who's visiting you:

Ad esempio, puoi dire a qualcuno che ti sta visitando:

If you would like to take a seat, I'll let my colleague know you're here.

Se vuoi sederti, farò sapere al mio collega che sei qui.

Or, you can say: If you'll follow me please, I'll show you around the premises.

Oppure puoi dire: Se vuoi seguirmi per favore, ti mostrerò i locali.

Right! That brings us to the end of this lesson.
