10 Common spelling and grammar mistakes made by native English speakers | Can you correct them?

English is a complicated language and  it's hard to learn and use it perfectly even for native speakers.

There is no shame in that!

All we need to do is to become aware of these  mistakes, and correct them slowly and surely until they go away.

Tudo o que precisamos fazer é tomar consciência desses erros e corrigi-los lenta e seguramente até que desapareçam.

So, in this lesson we're going to look at some common mistakes that I hear and see from native speakers around me, 

Portanto, nesta lição, veremos alguns erros comuns que ouço e vejo de falantes nativos ao meu redor

and see if you can figure out what they should have said or written instead.

e veremos se você consegue descobrir o que eles deveriam ter dito ou escrito.

So, when you're ready, let's look at the first mistake, which is a spelling mistake.

Então, quando estiver pronto, vamos ver o primeiro erro, que é um erro de ortografia.

He wasn't happy about loosing the match.

Ele não estava feliz por perder a partida.

What's the spelling mistake in this sentence?

Qual é o erro ortográfico nesta frase?

The mistake is obviously 'losing'.

O erro é obviamente 'perder'.

Losing is spelled l-o-s-e when it means fail to win.

Perder é soletrado l-o-s-e quando significa falhar na vitória.

The other word 'loose', notice the difference in pronunciation as well lose and loose,

A outra palavra 'solto', observe a diferença na pronúncia, bem como perder e solto,

means not tight. For example: A loose shirt.

significa não apertado. Por exemplo: Uma camisa solta.

Right! Let's look at spelling mistake No.2

Certo! Vejamos o erro de ortografia nº 2.

I like the style of this shirt, but I don't like it's colour.

Gosto do estilo desta camisa, mas não gosto de sua cor.

What's the spelling mistake here?

Qual é o erro ortográfico aqui?

This is a very common spelling mistake where 'its' should be spelt without the apostrophe.

Este é um erro ortográfico muito comum em que 'isso' deve ser escrito sem o apóstrofo.

'Its' without the apostrophe means belonging to an object.

'Its' sem o apóstrofo significa pertencer a um objeto.

Whereas, 'it's' with the apostrophe is the contraction of 'it is'.

Considerando que, 'it's' com o apóstrofo é a contração de 'it is'.

So in this sentence, we're talking about belonging to the shirt

Então, nesta frase, estamos falando sobre pertencer à camisa,

so, we should use its. i-t-s. No apostrophe!

portanto, devemos usá-la. isso é. Sem apóstrofe!

Right! Let's look at spelling mistake No.3

Certo! Vejamos o erro de ortografia No.3 Os

CD's came out in the 1980's.

CDs foram lançados na década de 1980.

What are the two spelling mistakes here?

Quais são os dois erros ortográficos aqui?

The mistakes are again to do with the use of apostrophe.

Os erros estão novamente relacionados ao uso de apóstrofo.

You know that the plural doesn't have an apostrophe.

Você sabe que o plural não tem apóstrofo.

So, one CD, two CDs.

Então, um CD, dois CDs.

If you use the apostrophe you want to say, like we saw before, belonging to the CD.

Se você usar o apóstrofo que deseja dizer, como vimos antes, pertencente ao CD.

For example: The CD's (apostrophe-s) title.

Por exemplo: O título do CD (apóstrofe-s).

Let's look at spelling mistake No.4.

Vejamos o erro de ortografia No.4.

You should of been more careful!

Você deveria ter sido mais cuidadoso!

You probably saw that straight away!

Você provavelmente viu isso imediatamente!

'Of' doesn't belong here. The word that belongs here is 'have'.

'Of' não pertence aqui. A palavra que pertence aqui é 'ter'.

You should have been more careful! But, contracted: You should've been more careful!

Você deveria ter sido mais cuidadoso! Mas, contratado: você deveria ter sido mais cuidadoso!

Now, 'of' and 've' sound very very similar and that creates the spelling mistake with native speakers.

Agora, 'of' e 've' soam muito, muito parecidos e isso cria o erro de ortografia com falantes nativos.

And here are some other common native spelling  mistakes because these words sound exactly the same.

E aqui estão alguns outros erros ortográficos nativos comuns porque essas palavras soam exatamente iguais.

Your, here, there, to, and who's.

Seu, aqui, ali, para e quem é.

So, remember these and make sure you don't make them yourself.

Portanto, lembre-se disso e certifique-se de não fazê-los você mesmo.

Right, now let's look at some common grammar mistakes I hear from native speakers around me.

Certo, agora vamos ver alguns erros gramaticais comuns que ouço de falantes nativos ao meu redor.

Here's the first one:

Aqui está a primeira:

There's some strawberries in the fridge.

Tem alguns morangos na geladeira.

What's the mistake and how would you correct it?

Qual é o erro e como você o corrigiria?

I'm sure you got that. 'Strawberries' is a plural noun. So, we shouldn't say 'there is' but 'there are'.

Tenho certeza que você entendeu. 'Morangos' é um substantivo plural. Então, não devemos dizer 'há', mas 'há'.

Use 'there is' only with singular nouns and  with uncountable nouns.

Use 'there is' apenas com substantivos singulares e substantivos incontáveis.

For example: There is only one strawberry left.

Por exemplo: resta apenas um morango.

Or: There's a lot of bread left.

Ou: Sobrou muito pão.

Let's look at common mistake No.6. Another grammar mistake.

Vejamos o erro comum nº 6. Outro erro de gramática.

And I have two sentences here for you. So, we're looking for two mistakes.

E tenho duas frases aqui para você. Então, estamos procurando por dois erros.

Look at the amount of cars in the car park today! There were less cars yesterday.

Veja a quantidade de carros no estacionamento hoje! Havia menos carros ontem.

Take your time. See if you can find the two errors here.

Sem pressa. Veja se você consegue encontrar os dois erros aqui.

The mistakes again are to do with singular and plural nouns.

Os erros novamente estão relacionados com substantivos singulares e plurais.

Cars is a countable and plural noun therefore, you shouldn't say 'amount' you should say 'number'.

Carros é um substantivo contável e plural, portanto, você não deve dizer 'quantia', deve dizer 'número'.

Look at the number of cars in the car park today!

Veja o número de carros no estacionamento hoje!

And also, it's not correct to say 'less cars'. We should say 'fewer cars'.

Além disso, não é correto dizer 'menos carros'. Deveríamos dizer 'menos carros'.

Words like amount, little, or less should  be used with uncountable nouns. For example 'traffic'.

Palavras como quantidade, pouco ou menos devem ser usadas com substantivos incontáveis. Por exemplo 'tráfego'.

Amount of traffic, little traffic, less traffic.

Quantidade de tráfego, pouco tráfego, menos tráfego.

Let's have a look at No.7

Vamos dar uma olhada no número 7.

If I would have known, I would have told you.

Se eu soubesse, teria contado a você.

How would you correct this?

Como você corrigiria isso?

I'm sure you noticed that this is a conditional three sentence.

Tenho certeza de que você notou que esta é uma frase condicional de três.

So what should we put in the 'if' clause?

Então, o que devemos colocar na cláusula 'se'?

Past Perfect! If I had known, I would have told you.

Passado Perfeito! Se eu soubesse, teria te contado.

However, don't be surprised if you hear this, occasionally, in certain American dialects.

No entanto, não se surpreenda se você ouvir isso, ocasionalmente, em certos dialetos americanos.

Okay! Let's look at mistake No.8, which will surprise you.

OK! Vejamos o erro nº 8, que irá surpreendê-lo.

Have you took the letters to the post office?

Você levou as cartas ao correio?

Yeah, I done it yesterday.

Sim, fiz ontem.

Can you spot and correct the mistakes? There are two of them.

Você consegue identificar e corrigir os erros? Existem dois deles.

I'm sure that was an easy one for you because  you've been memorising the list of Irregular Verbs for many years.

Tenho certeza de que foi fácil para você, porque você vem memorizando a lista de verbos irregulares há muitos anos.

Obviously, it's not: Have you took. But: Have you taken.

Obviamente, não é: você já tomou. Mas: Você já tomou.

And not: I done it yesterday. But: I did it yesterday.

E não: eu fiz isso ontem. Mas: eu fiz isso ontem.

So, you may be surprised to hear from me now that

Portanto, você pode se surpreender ao ouvir de mim agora que

even native speakers sometimes confuse the Past Simple  and the Past Participle forms of Irregular Verbs in English.

até mesmo falantes nativos às vezes confundem as formas do Passado Simples e do Particípio Passado de Verbos Irregulares em inglês.

Okay! Moving on to mistake No.9

OK! Passando para o erro nº 9,

John and me never used to fight.

John e eu nunca costumávamos lutar.

Spot the mistake here.

Descubra o erro aqui.

I hope you got this one.

Espero que você tenha este.

The correct answer is:  John and I never used to fight.

A resposta correta é: John e eu nunca brigávamos.

You know that 'I' is the subject pronoun, and 'me' is the object pronoun.

Você sabe que 'eu' é o pronome do sujeito e 'me' é o pronome do objeto.

In this sentence, John and I are in the subject position.

Nesta frase, John e eu estamos na posição de sujeito.

Now, if John and I were in the object position obviously, you would use 'me'.

Agora, se John e eu estivéssemos na posição de objeto obviamente, você usaria 'me'.

For example: He spoke to John and me yesterday.

Por exemplo: ele falou comigo e com John ontem.

And finally, No.10

E finalmente, nº 10.

We was at the cinema last night.

Estávamos no cinema ontem à noite.

I'm sure you spotted and corrected that straight away.

Tenho certeza de que você notou e corrigiu isso imediatamente.

It's not 'we was' but 'we were'.

Não é 'fomos', mas 'fomos'.

Obviously, you, they, were. And I, he, she, it, was.

Obviamente, você, eles, eram. E eu, ele, ela, foi.

I was very surprised when I heard some of the native speakers in the area where I live using 'was' for all pronouns.

Fiquei muito surpreso quando ouvi alguns falantes nativos da área onde moro usando 'era' para todos os pronomes.
