10 Common spelling and grammar mistakes made by native English speakers | Can you correct them?

English is a complicated language and  it's hard to learn and use it perfectly even for native speakers.

영어는 복잡한 언어이며 원어민도 완벽하게 배우고 사용하기 어렵습니다.

It is inevitable that we develop mistakes along our language journey.

There is no shame in that!

All we need to do is to become aware of these  mistakes, and correct them slowly and surely until they go away.

우리가 해야 할 일은 이러한 실수를 인식하고 사라질 때까지 천천히 그리고 확실하게 수정하는 것입니다.

So, in this lesson we're going to look at some common mistakes that I hear and see from native speakers around me, 

그래서 이번 강의에서는 제 주변의 원어민들에게서 듣고 본 일반적인 실수를 살펴보고

and see if you can figure out what they should have said or written instead.

그들이 대신 말하거나 썼어야 할 내용을 알아낼 수 있는지 알아볼 것입니다.

So, when you're ready, let's look at the first mistake, which is a spelling mistake.

준비가 되면 첫 번째 실수인 철자 오류를 살펴보겠습니다.

So, No.1

그래서, No.1

He wasn't happy about loosing the match.

그는 경기에서 진 것에 대해 기뻐하지 않았습니다.

What's the spelling mistake in this sentence?

이 문장에서 맞춤법 오류는 무엇입니까?

The mistake is obviously 'losing'.

실수는 분명히 '지는 것'입니다.

Losing is spelled l-o-s-e when it means fail to win.

Losing은 이기지 못함을 의미할 때 철자가 l-o-s-e입니다.

The other word 'loose', notice the difference in pronunciation as well lose and loose,

'loose'라는 또 다른 단어는 발음의 차이에 주의하세요. 'lose'와 'loose'는

means not tight. For example: A loose shirt.

꽉 조이지 않는다는 뜻입니다. 예: 헐렁한 셔츠.

Right! Let's look at spelling mistake No.2

오른쪽! 철자 오류 2번을 보자.

I like the style of this shirt, but I don't like it's colour.

이 셔츠의 스타일은 마음에 들지만 색상은 마음에 들지 않는다.

What's the spelling mistake here?

여기서 철자가 틀린 것은? 아포스트로피 없이

This is a very common spelling mistake where 'its' should be spelt without the apostrophe.

'its'를 써야 하는 매우 흔한 철자 오류입니다 .

'Its' without the apostrophe means belonging to an object.

아포스트로피가 없는 'Its'는 개체에 속하는 것을 의미합니다.

Whereas, 'it's' with the apostrophe is the contraction of 'it is'.

반면 아포스트로피가 있는 'it's'는 'it is'의 축약형입니다.

So in this sentence, we're talking about belonging to the shirt

따라서 이 문장에서는 셔츠에 속하는 것에 대해 이야기하고 있으므로

so, we should use its. i-t-s. No apostrophe!

셔츠를 사용해야 합니다. 그것은. 아포스트로피 없음!

Right! Let's look at spelling mistake No.3

오른쪽! 1980년대에 나온 3번 CD의 철자 실수를 보자

CD's came out in the 1980's.

What are the two spelling mistakes here?

여기서 맞춤법 오류 두 가지는 무엇인가요?

The mistakes are again to do with the use of apostrophe.

실수는 다시 아포스트로피 사용과 관련이 있습니다.

You know that the plural doesn't have an apostrophe.

복수형에는 아포스트로피가 없습니다.

So, one CD, two CDs.

그래서 CD 한 장, CD 두 장.

If you use the apostrophe you want to say, like we saw before, belonging to the CD.

이전에 본 것처럼 말하고 싶은 아포스트로피를 사용하면 CD에 속합니다.

For example: The CD's (apostrophe-s) title.

예: CD(아포스트로피) 제목입니다.

Let's look at spelling mistake No.4.

철자 오류 4번을 보자.

You should of been more careful!

당신은 더 조심해야!

You probably saw that straight away!

아마 바로 보셨을 거예요!

'Of' doesn't belong here. The word that belongs here is 'have'.

'~'는 여기에 속하지 않습니다. 여기에 속하는 단어는 '있다'입니다.

You should have been more careful! But, contracted: You should've been more careful!

더 조심했어야 했어! 하지만 계약: 좀 더 조심했어야 했어!

Now, 'of' and 've' sound very very similar and that creates the spelling mistake with native speakers.

이제 'of'와 've'는 소리가 매우 유사하여 원어민의 철자 오류가 발생합니다.

And here are some other common native spelling  mistakes because these words sound exactly the same.

다음은 이 단어들의 발음이 완전히 동일하기 때문에 흔히 발생하는 원어민 철자 오류입니다.

Your, here, there, to, and who's.

당신의, 여기, 거기, 누구에게.

So, remember these and make sure you don't make them yourself.

따라서 이를 기억하고 직접 만들지 않도록 하세요.

Right, now let's look at some common grammar mistakes I hear from native speakers around me.

자, 이제 내 주변의 원어민에게서 듣는 일반적인 문법 실수를 살펴보겠습니다.

Here's the first one:

여기 첫 번째가 있습니다.

There's some strawberries in the fridge.

냉장고에 딸기가 조금 있습니다.

What's the mistake and how would you correct it?

무엇이 잘못되었으며 어떻게 수정하시겠습니까?

I'm sure you got that. 'Strawberries' is a plural noun. So, we shouldn't say 'there is' but 'there are'.

나는 당신이 그것을 확신합니다. '딸기'은(는) 복수 명사입니다. 따라서 '있다'가 아니라 '있다'라고 해야 합니다.

Use 'there is' only with singular nouns and  with uncountable nouns.

단수 명사와 셀 수 없는 명사에만 'there is'를 사용하세요 .

For example: There is only one strawberry left.

예: 딸기가 한 개만 남았습니다.

Or: There's a lot of bread left.

또는: 빵이 많이 남았습니다.

Let's look at common mistake No.6. Another grammar mistake.

흔한 실수 6번을 봅시다. 또 다른 문법 실수입니다.

And I have two sentences here for you. So, we're looking for two mistakes.

여기에 두 문장이 있습니다. 그래서 우리는 두 가지 실수를 찾고 있습니다.

Look at the amount of cars in the car park today! There were less cars yesterday.

오늘 주차장에 있는 차의 양을 보세요! 어제는 차가 적었습니다.

Take your time. See if you can find the two errors here.

천천히하세요. 여기에서 두 가지 오류를 찾을 수 있는지 확인하세요.

The mistakes again are to do with singular and plural nouns.

실수는 다시 단수 및 복수 명사와 관련이 있습니다.

Cars is a countable and plural noun therefore, you shouldn't say 'amount' you should say 'number'.

Cars는 셀 수 있는 복수 명사이므로 'amount'라고 하지 말고 'number'라고 해야 합니다.

Look at the number of cars in the car park today!

오늘 주차장에 있는 차량 수를 보세요.

And also, it's not correct to say 'less cars'. We should say 'fewer cars'.

또한 '차가 적다'는 말도 옳지 않습니다. 우리는 '더 적은 자동차'라고 말해야 합니다.

Words like amount, little, or less should  be used with uncountable nouns. For example 'traffic'.

amount, little, less와 같은 단어는 셀 수 없는 명사와 함께 사용해야 합니다. 예: '교통'.

Amount of traffic, little traffic, less traffic.

트래픽 양, 적은 트래픽, 적은 트래픽.

Let's have a look at No.7

7번을 보자.

If I would have known, I would have told you.

내가 알았다면 말했을 것이다.

How would you correct this?

이것을 어떻게 수정하시겠습니까?

I'm sure you noticed that this is a conditional three sentence.

이것이 조건부 3문장임을 눈치채셨을 것입니다.

So what should we put in the 'if' clause?

그렇다면 'if' 절에 무엇을 넣어야 할까요?

Past Perfect! If I had known, I would have told you.

과거 완료! 내가 알았다면 나는 당신에게 말할 것입니다.

However, don't be surprised if you hear this, occasionally, in certain American dialects.

하지만 가끔 특정 미국 방언에서 이 말을 듣더라도 놀라지 마세요.

Okay! Let's look at mistake No.8, which will surprise you.

좋아요! 당신을 놀라게 할 8번의 실수를 살펴보겠습니다.

Have you took the letters to the post office?

Yeah, I done it yesterday.

Can you spot and correct the mistakes? There are two of them.

I'm sure that was an easy one for you because  you've been memorising the list of Irregular Verbs for many years.

수년 동안 불규칙 동사 목록을 암기해 왔기 때문에 쉬운 일이었을 것입니다.

Obviously, it's not: Have you took. But: Have you taken.

분명히, 그것은 아닙니다: 당신이 가져갔습니까? 그러나 : 당신은 촬영했습니다.

And not: I done it yesterday. But: I did it yesterday.

So, you may be surprised to hear from me now that

even native speakers sometimes confuse the Past Simple  and the Past Participle forms of Irregular Verbs in English.

Okay! Moving on to mistake No.9

좋아요! 실수 9번으로 넘어가겠습니다.

John and me never used to fight.

Spot the mistake here.

I hope you got this one.

나는 당신이 이것을 얻었기를 바랍니다.

The correct answer is:  John and I never used to fight.

정답은 다음과 같습니다. John과 저는 한 번도 싸운 적이 없습니다.

You know that 'I' is the subject pronoun, and 'me' is the object pronoun.

'I'는 주어 대명사 이고 'me'는 목적어 대명사라는 것을 알고 계실 것입니다.

In this sentence, John and I are in the subject position.

이 문장에서 John과 나는 주어 위치에 있습니다.

Now, if John and I were in the object position obviously, you would use 'me'.

이제 John과 내가 분명히 목적어 위치에 있다면 'me'를 사용할 것입니다.

For example: He spoke to John and me yesterday.

예: 그는 어제 John과 나에게 이야기했습니다.

And finally, No.10

그리고 마지막으로 No.10

We was at the cinema last night.

어젯밤에 영화관에 갔어요.

I'm sure you spotted and corrected that straight away.

당신이 바로 그것을 발견하고 수정했다고 확신합니다.

It's not 'we was' but 'we were'.

'우리는'이 아니라 '우리는'입니다.

Obviously, you, they, were. And I, he, she, it, was.

I was very surprised when I heard some of the native speakers in the area where I live using 'was' for all pronouns.
