Now, let's start by reminding ourselves what a relative pronoun is.

A relative pronoun connects

Um pronome relativo conecta

a noun to a clause that gives us information about that noun.

um substantivo a uma cláusula que nos fornece informações sobre esse substantivo.

When the noun is a person, we use the relative pronouns 'who', 'whom', and 'whose'.

Quando o substantivo é uma pessoa, usamos os pronomes relativos 'quem', 'quem' e 'de quem'.

In today's lesson, we're going to focus on relative pronouns for objects.

Na lição de hoje, vamos nos concentrar nos pronomes relativos para objetos.

These are 'which', 'that', and 'whose'.

Estes são 'qual', 'que' e 'de quem'.

We'll also look at the word 'what', which is not  a relative pronoun but is often confused as one.

Também veremos a palavra "o que", que não é um pronome relativo, mas muitas vezes é confundida como tal.

Okay! Let's start with the relative pronoun 'which'.

OK! Vamos começar com o pronome relativo 'que'.

Let's say someone says:

Digamos que alguém diga:

This is the movie.

Este é o filme.

Naturally, you would ask:

Naturalmente, você perguntaria:

Which movie?

qual filme?

And the answer is for example:

E a resposta é por exemplo:

The movie, which won 11 Oscars in 1997.

O filme, que ganhou 11 Oscars em 1997.

The part that gives the information is called a relative clause.

A parte que dá a informação é chamada de cláusula relativa.

So, 'which' is the relative pronoun, and 'which won  11 Oscars in 1997' is the relative clause.

Portanto, 'qual' é o pronome relativo e 'que ganhou 11 Oscars em 1997' é a cláusula relativa.

Now,  we call this one an 'essential' or 'defining relative clause'.

Agora,  chamamos isso de 'essencial' ou 'cláusula relativa definidora'.

Now, that's a big name. But, all it means is that we cannot remove it from the sentence.

Agora, esse é um grande nome. Mas, tudo o que isso significa é que não podemos removê-lo da sentença.

Because if we remove it, we're back to the situation 'which movie'.

Porque se o removermos, voltaremos à situação 'qual filme'.

We also have 'non-essential' or 'non-defining relative clauses' 

Também temos 'cláusulas relativas não essenciais' ou 'não definidoras'

and these give extra information about the noun.  But, they can be dropped from the sentence and the

For example, if I say:

This is the movie Titanic, which won 11 Oscars in 1997.

So, this phrase now 'which won 11 Oscars in 1997', gives additional information.

Então, essa frase agora 'que ganhou 11 Oscars em 1997', fornece informações adicionais.

I can drop it and say:

Posso desistir e dizer:

This is the movie Titanic. The sentence is complete.

este é o filme Titanic. A frase está completa.

We don't need to ask:

Não precisamos perguntar: De

Which movie are you talking about?

que filme você está falando?

A very common question is:

Uma pergunta muito comum é:

Can we use 'that' instead of 'which'?

And the answer is...

E a resposta é...

Yes! But, only with an essential relative clause.

Sim! Mas, apenas com uma cláusula relativa essencial.

So, we can say:

This is the movie that won 11 Oscars in 1997.

Este é o filme que ganhou 11 Oscars em 1997.

Remember here it's an essential clause.

Lembre-se que aqui é uma cláusula essencial.

But in the other example:

Mas no outro exemplo:

This is the movie Titanic, which won 11 oscars in 1997.

Este é o filme Titanic, que ganhou 11 Oscars em 1997.

We cannot use 'that'.

Não podemos usar 'isso'.

Only 'which' works in non-essential relative clauses.

Apenas 'que' funciona em cláusulas relativas não essenciais.

So, now let's look at the relative pronoun 'whose'.

Então, agora vamos ver o pronome relativo 'cujo'.

'Whose' is used for possession for both people and objects.

'Whose' é usado para posse de pessoas e objetos.

For example, if we say:

Por exemplo, se dissermos:

This is the movie. I love the cast of this movie. And we want to put these two sentences together.

Este é o filme. Eu amo o elenco desse filme. E queremos juntar essas duas frases.

Our sentence is: This is the movie whose cast I love.

Nossa frase é: Este é o filme cujo elenco eu amo.

A very common question I get is:

Uma pergunta muito comum que recebo é:

Can we use 'which' instead of 'whose'.

podemos usar 'which' em vez de 'whose'.

Yes! You can. But, then you would have to bring in the

preposition 'of' and the article 'the' into your sentence.

And you end up with:

This is the movie of which the cast I love.

As you can hear, it's  a bit complicated and it sounds very formal.

Como você pode ouvir, é um pouco complicado e soa muito formal.

You can make it a bit less formal by switching the  order of 'of' and 'that' and say:

Você pode torná-lo um pouco menos formal trocando a ordem de 'de' e 'aquilo' e dizer:

This is the movie the cast of which I love.

Este é o filme cujo elenco eu amo.

That sounds a little better, but it's still very formal.

Isso soa um pouco melhor, mas ainda é muito formal.

I'd recommend you always use 'whose'.

Eu recomendo que você sempre use 'de quem'.

Whether you want to express  a possession between people and objects or objects and objects.

Se você deseja expressar uma posse entre pessoas e objetos ou objetos e objetos.

Just stick with 'whose'.

Apenas fique com 'de quem'.

Okay! So how about other prepositions than 'of'?

OK! Então, que tal outras preposições além de 'of'?

For example, let's say we're using the verb 'talk about'.

Por exemplo, digamos que estamos usando o verbo 'falar sobre'.

This is the movie about which I was talking.

Este é o filme sobre o qual eu estava falando.

Again, like the previous example, with 'of' it sounds very formal.

Novamente, como no exemplo anterior, com 'of' soa muito formal.

What we do here is that we take  the preposition and put it at the end of the sentence.

O que fazemos aqui é pegar  a preposição e colocá-la no final da frase.

This is the movie which I was talking about.

Este é o filme do qual eu estava falando.

And when we do that, when we have removed  the preposition from its place next to 'which',

E quando fazemos isso, quando removemos a preposição de seu lugar ao lado de 'which',

we can also use 'that'. This is the movie that I was talking about.

também podemos usar 'that'. Este é o filme do qual eu estava falando.

Another common question I get  is:

Outra pergunta comum que recebo  é:

Can we drop the relative pronoun?

podemos descartar o pronome relativo?

We cannot drop 'whose'. But we can drop 'that' or 'which'

Não podemos descartar 'de quem'. Mas podemos descartar 'that' ou 'which'

in an essential clause when the information is  about the object of the sentence.

em uma cláusula essencial quando a informação for sobre o objeto da frase.

For example,  in the sentence:

Por exemplo,  na frase:

This is the movie which or that I was talking about.

Este é o filme do qual ou daquele eu estava falando.

'Movie' is the object of this  sentence and we can drop 'which' or 'that'.

'Filme' é o objeto desta  frase e podemos descartar 'qual' ou 'aquilo'.

We can just say:

Podemos apenas dizer:

This is the movie I was talking about.

este é o filme do qual eu estava falando.

But, in the other example: This is the  movie which or that won 11 Oscars in 1997.

Mas, no outro exemplo: Este é o filme que ou aquele ganhou 11 Oscars em 1997.

Here, 'movie' is the subject of the sentence  and in this case you must not drop 'which' or 'that'.

Aqui, 'filme' é o sujeito da frase e, neste caso, você não deve descartar 'qual' ou 'aquele'.

You cannot say: This is the movie won 11 Oscars.

Você não pode dizer: Este é o filme que ganhou 11 Oscars.

You need to say: This is the movie which won 11 Oscars.

Você precisa dizer: Este é o filme que ganhou 11 Oscars.

Or, this is the movie that won 11 Oscars.

Ou, este é o filme que ganhou 11 Oscars.

And finally, another very common question is:

E por fim, outra pergunta muito comum é: o

Is what a relative pronoun?

que é um pronome relativo?

And the answer is... No!

E a resposta é não!

It's a very common mistake to use it as a relative pronoun instead of 'which' or 'that'.

É um erro muito comum usá-lo como um pronome relativo em vez de 'qual' ou 'aquilo'.

For example, I often hear:

Por exemplo, sempre ouço:

This is the  movie what I was talking about.

Este é o  filme sobre o qual eu estava falando.

'What' includes the idea of the noun and the relative pronoun.

'O que' inclui a ideia do substantivo e o pronome relativo.

So for example, instead of the movie which or the movie that, you can just say 'what'.

Por exemplo, em vez do filme que ou o filme que, você pode apenas dizer "o quê".

For example, if you're looking at the screen and the  movie is on, you can just point and say:

Por exemplo, se você estiver olhando para a tela e o filme estiver passando, basta apontar e dizer:

This is what I was talking about.

Era disso que eu estava falando.
