Now, let's start by reminding ourselves what a relative pronoun is.

A relative pronoun connects

Un pronome relativo collega

a noun to a clause that gives us information about that noun.

When the noun is a person, we use the relative pronouns 'who', 'whom', and 'whose'.

Quando il sostantivo è una persona, usiamo i pronomi relativi 'chi', 'chi' e 'di chi'.

In today's lesson, we're going to focus on relative pronouns for objects.

Nella lezione di oggi, ci concentreremo sui pronomi relativi per gli oggetti.

These are 'which', 'that', and 'whose'.

We'll also look at the word 'what', which is not  a relative pronoun but is often confused as one.

Okay! Let's start with the relative pronoun 'which'.

Va bene! Iniziamo con il pronome relativo "quale".

Let's say someone says:

Diciamo che qualcuno dice:

This is the movie.

Questo è il film.

Naturally, you would ask:

Naturalmente, chiederesti:

Which movie?

quale film?

And the answer is for example:

E la risposta è ad esempio:

The movie, which won 11 Oscars in 1997.

il film, che ha vinto 11 Oscar nel 1997.

The part that gives the information is called a relative clause.

La parte che fornisce l'informazione è chiamata clausola relativa.

So, 'which' is the relative pronoun, and 'which won  11 Oscars in 1997' is the relative clause.

Quindi, "quale" è il pronome relativo e "che ha vinto 11 Oscar nel 1997" è la proposizione relativa.

Now,  we call this one an 'essential' or 'defining relative clause'.

Ora,  la chiamiamo "essenziale" o "proposizione relativa di definizione".

Now, that's a big name. But, all it means is that we cannot remove it from the sentence.

Ora, questo è un nome importante. Ma tutto ciò significa che non possiamo rimuoverlo dalla frase.

Because if we remove it, we're back to the situation 'which movie'.

We also have 'non-essential' or 'non-defining relative clauses'

and these give extra information about the noun.  But, they can be dropped from the sentence and the

I can drop it and say:

We don't need to ask:

A very common question is:

And the answer is...

Yes! But, only with an essential relative clause.

So, we can say:

Remember here it's an essential clause.

But in the other example:

We cannot use 'that'.

Only 'which' works in non-essential relative clauses.

So, now let's look at the relative pronoun 'whose'.

Quindi, ora diamo un'occhiata al pronome relativo "di chi".

'Whose' is used for possession for both people and objects.

"Di chi" è usato per il possesso sia di persone che di oggetti.

For example, if we say:

Ad esempio, se diciamo:

This is the movie. I love the cast of this movie. And we want to put these two sentences together.

Questo è il film. Adoro il cast di questo film. E vogliamo mettere insieme queste due frasi.

Our sentence is: This is the movie whose cast I love.

La nostra frase è: questo è il film di cui amo il cast.

A very common question I get is:

Can we use 'which' instead of 'whose'.

Yes! You can. But, then you would have to bring in the

And you end up with:

As you can hear, it's  a bit complicated and it sounds very formal.

You can make it a bit less formal by switching the  order of 'of' and 'that' and say:

Puoi renderlo un po' meno formale cambiando l' ordine di "di" e "quello" e dicendo:

This is the movie the cast of which I love.

questo è il film di cui amo il cast.

That sounds a little better, but it's still very formal.

Suona un po' meglio, ma è comunque molto formale.

I'd recommend you always use 'whose'.

Ti consiglio di utilizzare sempre "di chi".

Whether you want to express  a possession between people and objects or objects and objects.

Sia che tu voglia esprimere un possesso tra persone e oggetti o tra oggetti e oggetti.

Just stick with 'whose'.

Basta restare con "di chi".

Okay! So how about other prepositions than 'of'?

For example, let's say we're using the verb 'talk about'.

This is the movie about which I was talking.

Again, like the previous example, with 'of' it sounds very formal.

What we do here is that we take  the preposition and put it at the end of the sentence.

This is the movie which I was talking about.

And when we do that, when we have removed  the preposition from its place next to 'which',

we can also use 'that'. This is the movie that I was talking about.

Another common question I get  is:

Can we drop the relative pronoun?

possiamo eliminare il pronome relativo?

We cannot drop 'whose'. But we can drop 'that' or 'which'

Non possiamo eliminare "di chi". Ma possiamo eliminare "quello" o "quale"

in an essential clause when the information is  about the object of the sentence.

in una proposizione essenziale quando l'informazione riguarda l'oggetto della frase.

For example,  in the sentence:

Ad esempio,  nella frase:

This is the movie which or that I was talking about.

Questo è il film di cui o di cui stavo parlando.

'Movie' is the object of this  sentence and we can drop 'which' or 'that'.

"Film" è l'oggetto di questa  frase e possiamo eliminare "quale" o "quello".

We can just say:

Possiamo semplicemente dire:

This is the movie I was talking about.

questo è il film di cui stavo parlando.

But, in the other example: This is the  movie which or that won 11 Oscars in 1997.

Ma, nell'altro esempio: questo è il film che o quello ha vinto 11 Oscar nel 1997.

Here, 'movie' is the subject of the sentence  and in this case you must not drop 'which' or 'that'.

You cannot say: This is the movie won 11 Oscars.

puoi dire: questo è il film che ha vinto 11 Oscar.

You need to say: This is the movie which won 11 Oscars.

Or, this is the movie that won 11 Oscars.

Oppure, questo è il film che ha vinto 11 Oscar.

And finally, another very common question is:

E infine, un'altra domanda molto comune è:

Is what a relative pronoun?

cos'è un pronome relativo?

And the answer is... No!

E la risposta è... No!

It's a very common mistake to use it as a relative pronoun instead of 'which' or 'that'.

È un errore molto comune usarlo come pronome relativo invece di "quale" o "quello".

For example, I often hear:

Ad esempio, sento spesso:

This is the  movie what I was talking about.

questo è il  film di cui stavo parlando.

'What' includes the idea of the noun and the relative pronoun.

"Cosa" include l'idea del sostantivo e il pronome relativo.

So for example, instead of the movie which or the movie that, you can just say 'what'.

Quindi, ad esempio, invece del film quale o del film quello, puoi semplicemente dire "cosa".

For example, if you're looking at the screen and the  movie is on, you can just point and say:

Ad esempio, se stai guardando lo schermo e il film è in onda, puoi semplicemente indicare e dire:

This is what I was talking about.
