When do we use the relative pronoun 'which'?

Now, let's start by reminding ourselves what a relative pronoun is.

A relative pronoun connects

関係代名詞は

a noun to a clause that gives us information about that noun.

、名詞を、その名詞に関する情報を提供する節に結び付けます。

When the noun is a person, we use the relative pronouns 'who', 'whom', and 'whose'.

名詞が人の場合は、関係代名詞 「who」、「whom」、「whose」を使用します。

In today's lesson, we're going to focus on relative pronouns for objects.

今日のレッスンでは、オブジェクトの関係代名詞に焦点を当てます。

These are 'which', 'that', and 'whose'.

これらは「どれ」、「あれ」、「だれ」です。

We'll also look at the word 'what', which is not  a relative pronoun but is often confused as one.

また、関係代名詞ではなく、関係代名詞と混同されることが多い「what」という単語についても見ていき ます。

Okay! Let's start with the relative pronoun 'which'.

わかった！ 関係代名詞「which」から始めましょう。

Let's say someone says:

誰かが言ったとしましょう：

This is the movie.

これは映画です。

Naturally, you would ask:

当然のことながら、次のように尋ねます。

Which movie?

どの映画ですか?

And the answer is for example:

答えは、たとえば

The movie, which won 11 Oscars in 1997.

、1997 年に 11 のオスカーを獲得した映画

The part that gives the information is called a relative clause.

です。情報を提供する部分は関係節と呼ばれます。

So, 'which' is the relative pronoun, and 'which won  11 Oscars in 1997' is the relative clause.

したがって、「which」は関係代名詞であり、「which 1997 年に 11 のオスカーを受賞した」は関係節です。

Now,  we call this one an 'essential' or 'defining relative clause'.

現在、これを「必須」または「定義関係節」と呼んでいます。

Now, that's a big name. But, all it means is that we cannot remove it from the sentence.

さて、それは大きな名前です。 しかし、これは文から削除できないことを意味し ます。

Because if we remove it, we're back to the situation 'which movie'.

それを削除すると、「どの映画」という状況に戻るからです。

We also have 'non-essential' or 'non-defining relative clauses'

and these give extra information about the noun.  But, they can be dropped from the sentence and the

sentence is still complete.

For example, if I say:

This is the movie Titanic, which won 11 Oscars in 1997.

So, this phrase now 'which won 11 Oscars in 1997', gives additional information.

I can drop it and say:

This is the movie Titanic. The sentence is complete.

We don't need to ask:

質問する必要はありません。

Which movie are you talking about?

A very common question is:

Can we use 'that' instead of 'which'?

And the answer is...

Yes! But, only with an essential relative clause.

So, we can say:

This is the movie that won 11 Oscars in 1997.

Remember here it's an essential clause.

But in the other example:

This is the movie Titanic, which won 11 oscars in 1997.

We cannot use 'that'.

」です。「それ」は使用できません。

Only 'which' works in non-essential relative clauses.

重要でない関係節では「which」のみが機能します。

So, now let's look at the relative pronoun 'whose'.

それでは、関係代名詞「whose」を見てみましょう。

'Whose' is used for possession for both people and objects.

「whose」は、人や物の両方を所有するために使用されます。

For example, if we say:

たとえば

This is the movie. I love the cast of this movie. And we want to put these two sentences together.

、「これは映画です。」 この映画のキャストが大好きです。 そして、この 2 つの文をまとめたいと思います。

Our sentence is: This is the movie whose cast I love.

私たちの文は次のとおりです。これは、キャストが大好きな映画です。

A very common question I get is:

Can we use 'which' instead of 'whose'.

Yes! You can. But, then you would have to bring in the

preposition 'of' and the article 'the' into your sentence.

And you end up with:

This is the movie of which the cast I love.

As you can hear, it's  a bit complicated and it sounds very formal.

You can make it a bit less formal by switching the  order of 'of' and 'that' and say:

「of」と「that」の順序を入れ替えて、「

This is the movie the cast of which I love.

これは私が大好きなキャストの映画です。

That sounds a little better, but it's still very formal.

少し良く聞こえますが、それでも非常にフォーマルです。

I'd recommend you always use 'whose'.

常に「whose」を使用することをおすすめします。

Whether you want to express  a possession between people and objects or objects and objects.

人と物、物と物の間の所有物を表現したいかどうか。

Just stick with 'whose'.

「誰」に固執するだけです。

Okay! So how about other prepositions than 'of'?

わかった！ では、「of」以外の前置詞はどうですか？

For example, let's say we're using the verb 'talk about'.

たとえば、動詞「talk about」を使用しているとしましょう。

This is the movie about which I was talking.

これは私が話していた映画です。

Again, like the previous example, with 'of' it sounds very formal.

繰り返しますが、前の例と同様に、'of' を使用すると、非常にフォーマルに聞こえます。

What we do here is that we take  the preposition and put it at the end of the sentence.

ここで行うことは、前置詞を取り 、文末に置くことです。

This is the movie which I was talking about.

これは私が話していた映画です。

And when we do that, when we have removed  the preposition from its place next to 'which',

その場合 、前置詞を「which」の隣の場所から削除すると、

we can also use 'that'. This is the movie that I was talking about.

「that」も使用できます。 これは私が話していた映画です。

Another common question I get  is:

Can we drop the relative pronoun?

、「関係代名詞を削除できますか?」です。

We cannot drop 'whose'. But we can drop 'that' or 'which'

「whose」を削除することはできません。 ただし

in an essential clause when the information is  about the object of the sentence.

、情報が文の目的に関するものである場合、必須節で「that」または「which」を削除できます 。

For example,  in the sentence:

たとえば、文中:

This is the movie which or that I was talking about.

これは、私が話していた映画です。

'Movie' is the object of this  sentence and we can drop 'which' or 'that'.

「映画」はこの文の目的語であり、「which」または「that」を削除できます。

We can just say:

This is the movie I was talking about.

これは私が話していた映画です。

But, in the other example: This is the  movie which or that won 11 Oscars in 1997.

しかし、別の例では、これは 1997 年に 11 のオスカーを獲得した映画です。

Here, 'movie' is the subject of the sentence  and in this case you must not drop 'which' or 'that'.

ここでは、「映画」が文の主語で あり、この場合、「どの」または「それ」を削除してはなりません。

You cannot say: This is the movie won 11 Oscars.

あなたは言うことができません: これは 11 のオスカーを獲得した映画です.

You need to say: This is the movie which won 11 Oscars.

あなたは言う必要があります: これは11のオスカーを獲得した映画です.

Or, this is the movie that won 11 Oscars.

または、これは 11 個のオスカーを獲得した映画です。

And finally, another very common question is:

最後に、非常によくあるもう 1 つの質問は

Is what a relative pronoun?

And the answer is... No!

答えは...いいえ！

It's a very common mistake to use it as a relative pronoun instead of 'which' or 'that'.

「which」や「that」の代わりに関係代名詞として使用するのはよくある間違い です。

For example, I often hear:

たとえば、よく耳にするの

This is the  movie what I was talking about.

は、これは私が話していた映画です。

'What' includes the idea of the noun and the relative pronoun.

「What」には、名詞と関係代名詞の概念が含まれます。

So for example, instead of the movie which or the movie that, you can just say 'what'.

たとえば、movie which または the movie that の代わりに、単に「what」と言うことができます。

For example, if you're looking at the screen and the  movie is on, you can just point and say:

たとえば、 映画がオンになっているときに画面を見ている場合

This is what I was talking about.

は、指さして「これは私が話していたことです」と言うことができます。
