English grammar in conversation | Using 'who', 'whom' & 'whose' in questions & as relative pronouns

Do you sometimes get confused between 'who', 'whom', and 'whose'?

「誰が」、「誰が」、「誰が」を混同することがありますか?

By the end of this lesson, any confusion you may have about these words,

whether as question words or relative pronouns, will have been cleared up!

So, let's take this sentence for example:

Kate phoned Steve.

ケイトはスティーブに電話しました。

If we want to ask a question

where the answer is 'Kate', that is the subject of the sentence, we use the question word 'who':

答えが「ケイト」である質問をしたい場合、それが文の主語であり 、質問語「誰が」を使用し

Who phoned Steve?

ます。スティーブに電話をかけたのは誰ですか?

Okay! Let's now look at the question word 'whom'.

わかった！ では、疑問詞「whom」を見てみましょう。

Same sentence: Kate phoned Steve.

同じ文章: ケイトはスティーブに電話した。

But now, this time, we want to ask a question where the answer is 'Steve', and 'Steve' is the direct object of this sentence.

しかし、今回は、答えが「スティーブ」で 、「スティーブ」がこの文の直接目的語である質問をしたいと思います。

So, you would imagine that we need a different question word. You're right!

ですから、別の疑問詞が必要だと想像するでしょう。 あなたが正しい！

The question word, grammatically speaking, is 'whom':

疑問詞は、文法的に言えば、「who」

Whom did Kate phone?

です。ケイトは誰に電話しましたか?

And the answer is 'Steve'.

答えは「スティーブ」です。

But, this word 'whom' is becoming very very rare in English. It's disappearing!

しかし、この「whom」という言葉は、英語では非常にまれになりつつあります。 消えてる！

Now, even when we are asking a question about the object of the sentence, we just use 'who'.

現在、文の目的について質問しているときでも、 単に「who」を使用しています。

So, the better question to ask is simply:

したがって、より適切な質問は単純に次のとおり

Who did Kate phone?

です。ケイトが電話をかけたのは誰ですか?

So, what if 'Steve' is the indirect object of the sentence? For example, if the sentence is:

では、「Steve」が文の間接目的語の場合はどうなるでしょうか。 たとえば、次のような文の場合:

Kate bought a phone for Steve.

ケイトはスティーブのために電話を買いました。

And the answer to the question we want to ask is 'for Steve'.

私たちが聞きたい質問への答えは、「スティーブのために」です。

Do we now use 'whom'?

私たちは今「誰」を使っていますか？

Do we say: For whom did Kate buy a phone?

ケイトは誰のために電話を買ったのですか?

The sentence is perfectly grammatically correct, but it's extremely rare to use this formulation.

この文は文法的には完全に正しいですが、 この定式化を使用することは非常にまれです。

Again, we want to swap 'whom' for 'who'.

ここでも、'whom' を 'who' に置き換えます。

But, what happens here is that we cannot keep the preposition and say:

しかし、ここで何が起こるかというと、前置詞をそのままにして、「

For who did Kate buy a phone?

ケイトは誰のために電話を買ったの?」と言うことができないということです。

We take the preposition and put it at the end.

前置詞を取って最後に置きます。

So, the question becomes:

Who did Kate buy a phone for?

ケイトは誰のために電話を購入したのですか?

The only situation where we keep 'whom' is when we ask a short question:

「誰のために」という短い質問をするときだけ、「誰のために」を使用

For whom?

しますか?

So, when the preposition is right next to the question word.

つまり、前置詞が疑問詞のすぐ隣にある場合です。

Okay! And the final question word is 'whose',

わかった！ 最後の疑問詞は「whose」です。

which is always used for possession.

これは常に所有を表すために使用されます。

Let's say that Kate found Steve's phone,

ケイトがスティーブの電話、スティーブの電話を見つけたとしましょう

the phone that belongs to Steve.

。

The question word here to use is 'whose':

ここで使用する質問語は「whose」

Whose phone did Kate find?

です。ケイトは誰の電話を見つけましたか?

Steve's phone.

スティーブの電話。

Okay! That's all for question words.

わかった！ 疑問詞は以上です。

Now, let's look at the same words 'who', 'whom', and 'whose' as relative pronouns.

では、同じ単語「who」、「whom」、「whose」を関係代名詞として見てみましょう。

Just a reminder that a relative pronoun creates a clause that tells us who we're talking about.

関係代名詞は、誰について話しているかを示す句を作成することを思い出してください 。

For example, if we hear the sentence: The man spoke.

たとえば、次の文が聞こえたとします。男性が話しました。

We're not quite sure which man we're talking about. So, we need to identify this man,

どの男性について話しているのかよくわかりません。 したがって、この男性を特定する必要があり、

and we can create this clause, which is for example: The man who was sitting behind me.

この句を作成できます。たとえば、 「私の後ろに座っていた男性」です。

And because the man here is the subject, we use the word 'who'.

ここでは男性が主語であるため、「誰」という言葉を使用します。

Now, this clause is called an 'essential' or 'defining' relative clause.

現在、この句は「必須」または「定義」関係句と呼ばれています。

I know that sounds complicated.

私はそれが複雑に聞こえることを知っています。

But, all it means is that it's essential to understand this sentence.

ただし、この文を理解することが不可欠であることを意味しています。

You can't remove it.

削除することはできません。

Because if you remove it, we come back to the 'Which man?' question.

それを削除すると、「どの男?」に戻ってくるからです。 質問。

But, we also have something called a  'non-essential' or 'non-defining' relative clause.

ただし、 「非必須」または「非定義」関係節と呼ばれるものもあります。

This type of clause gives more information about  the person in the sentence, but you can drop it,

and the sentence is still complete.

、省略しても文は完成したままです。

For example:

例：

My brother, who was sitting behind me, spoke.

私の後ろに座っていた兄が話しました。

You can drop that and simply say:

My brother spoke. We still know who we're talking about.

私の兄弟は話しました. 私たちはまだ誰について話しているかを知っています。

I hope you noticed that with a non-essential relative clause, the clause comes between two commas.

重要ではない 関係詞節では、節 が 2 つの カンマの間にあることに気づいていただければ幸いです。

That means we can drop it.

つまり、私たちはそれを落とすことができます。

With an essential relative clause, there are no commas.

必須の関係節では、コンマはありません。

So, let's now look at the relative pronoun 'whom'.

Remember our original sentence: Kate phoned Steve.

元の文を思い出してください。ケイトは スティーブに電話しました。

Remember that 'Steve' is the direct object, and if you want to talk about Steve,

「Steve」は直接目的語であることを思い出してください

I suppose we want to use a different word  'whom': Steve is the person whom Kate phoned.  

。Steve について話したい場合は、別の「whom」という言葉を使用したいと思い ます。Steve は Kate が電話をかけた人です。

But again, exactly as we had with the questions,  this word 'whom' is also disappearing as a relative pronoun.

しかし、繰り返しになりますが、質問の場合とまったく同じように、 この「whom」という単語も関係代名詞として消えつつあります。

So, the most common way of saying this is using 'who' again:

したがって、これを言う最も一般的な方法は、再び「誰」を使用することです。

Steve is the person who Kate phoned.

スティーブは、ケイトが電話をかけた人です。

Now, what if 'Steve' is the indirect object? Let's look at that sentence:

では、「Steve」が間接目的語の場合はどうなるでしょうか。 その文を見てみましょう。

Kate bought a phone for Steve.

ケイトはスティーブのために電話を買いました。

Steve is in the indirect object. So, let's use 'whom':

Steve は間接オブジェクトにあります。 それでは、「誰」を使用しましょう。

Steve is the person for whom Kate bought a phone.

スティーブは、ケイトが電話を購入した相手です。

That would be the strictly grammatically correct sentence.

これは厳密に文法的に正しい文です。

But once again, just like with the questions, extremely uncommon.

ただし、質問と同様に、非常にまれです。

 So, we need to do the same thing.

したがって、同じことを行う必要があります。

We need to swap 'whom' for 'who' but remove the preposition and put it at the end.

「who」を「who」に交換する必要があります が、前置詞を削除して末尾に置きます。

So, the sentence becomes:

したがって、文は次のようになります。

Steve is the person who Kate bought a phone for.

スティーブは、ケイトが電話を購入した人物です。

Okay! And finally, the relative pronoun 'whose'.

わかった！ 最後に、関係代名詞「whose」です。

Let's say that Steve lost his phone and we want to mention this:

スティーブが電話を紛失したとしましょう

Steve was the person whose phone was lost.

。電話を紛失したのはスティーブでした。

One very interesting point about 'whose'  is that you can also use it for a relation between two objects,

「whose」の非常に興味深い点 は、2 つのオブジェクト間の関係、つまり

a possessive relation between two objects.

2 つのオブジェクト間の所有関係にも使用できることです。

For example, let's say that the screen of this phone was cracked.

たとえば、このスマートフォンの画面にひびが入ったとします。

If I want to combine these two ideas with this relative pronoun, I would say:

この 2 つのアイデアをこの関係代名詞と組み合わせるとしたら

It was the phone whose screen was cracked.

、「画面が割れたのは電話です」と言うでしょう。

Okay! That's all for 'who', 'whom', and 'whose' as relative pronouns.

わかった！ 関係代名詞としての「who」、「whom」、「whose」については以上です。

And I'd like to end by answering one question that I often get.

最後に、よくある質問に 1 つ答えて終わりたいと思います。

And that question is:

Can we use 'that' as a relative pronoun for people?

「that」を人々の関係代名詞として使用できるかどうかです。

The answer is:

Yes, but only instead of 'who'. You cannot use it instead of 'whose'.

答えは:

はい、ただし「誰」の代わりにのみです。 「whose」の代わりに使用することはできません。

So, we can say:

Kate is the person who/that bought a phone for Steve.

And we can also say:

Steve is the person who/that Kate bought a phone for.
