English tenses | Present Simple (I do) & Present Continuous (I'm doing) | present, past, future uses

Is it clear to you when to  use 'I do' and when to use  

'I'm doing' when you talk about present events?

In today's lesson, we're  going to look at all the uses

of the Present Simple and  Present Continuous tenses.

Now, let's start by looking at  how we use 'I do' and 'I'm doing' 

それでは、現在の出来事について話しているときに 、「I do」と「I'm doing」をどのように使用するかを見てみましょう

when we're talking about present events.

We use Present Simple. That is: I do,  he does, etc. for facts and habits.

現在のシンプルを使用します。 つまり 、事実と習慣について、I do、he do などです。

For example:

I work in a software firm. That's a fact.

私はソフトウェア会社で働いています。 あれは事実です。

Or:

または:

We don't live in a big town. That's also a fact.

A habit can be: He plays golf every Saturday.

習慣は次のとおりです。彼は毎週土曜日にゴルフをします。

Or: She doesn't often take the train.

または: 彼女はあまり電車に乗りません。

So, what about Present Continuous. That is: I am doing, he is doing, etc.

では、現在進行形はどうでしょうか。 つまり、I am doing、he is doing など

We use the Present Continuous  tense for actions in progress.

です。進行中のアクションには現在継続時制を使用します。

For example: I'm currently working from home.

例: 現在、自宅で仕事をしています。

Or: He is playing golf now.

または: 彼は今ゴルフをしています。

Now, make sure that you don't use the  Present Continuous tense with state verbs.

You can only use Continuous  tenses with action verbs.

は継続時制のみを使用でき ます。

For example think about the verb 'think'.

たとえば、「考える」という動詞について考えてみましょう。

'Think' has two meanings. One is to reflect:

What are you thinking about?

熟考することです：あなたは何を考えていますか？

You can say that in the Present Continuous tense: What are you thinking about at the moment?

現在進行形で言うことができます: 現時点で何を考えていますか?

But, 'think' also means to have an opinion.

しかし、「考える」には意見を持つことも含まれます。

So, you cannot use that in the Continuous form.

したがって、継続形では使用できません。

You can't say: What are you thinking of this idea?

You have to use it only in the Simple form:

What do you think of this idea?

Right! Let's look at how we use  these two tenses for future events

starting with the Present Continuous tense.

現在進行形から始めます。

We use the Present Continuous tense to  talk about arrangements in the future.

現在進行形を使用 して、将来の取り決めについて話します。

For example: He is playing in a  golf tournament next Saturday.

例: 彼は 来週の土曜日にゴルフ トーナメントでプレーします。

Or: She is taking the train to London tomorrow.

または: 彼女は明日ロンドン行きの電車に乗る予定です。

So, when do we use the Present Simple?

では、Present Simple はいつ使用するのでしょうか。

We use the Present Simple to  speak about scheduled events.

Present Simple を使用して、 スケジュールされたイベントについて話します。

For example: The tournament  starts at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.

例: トーナメント は土曜日の午前 9 時に始まります。

Or: The train leaves at 2 p.m. tomorrow.

または: 列車は午後 2 時に出発します。 明日。

Okay! Let's put these two  usages together in a dialogue.

So, for the present and the future.

So, the dialogue can go like this:

Do you have a second now?

No, sorry! I'm packing my bags.

Can I see you this evening then?

No, I'm catching the train  to St Andrews this evening.

Oh! Are you taking part in the golf tournament?

Of course! I take part every year.

Good luck! What time does the train leave?

It leaves at 6.

Right! That's it for using these two  tenses for present and future events.

Now, strangely, sometimes you will  hear them used for past events.

奇妙なことに、 これらが過去の出来事に使用されていると耳にすることがあります。

This is usually when we want to  tell a story, a compelling story.

And the Present tense here  is called the 'Narrative

Present' sometimes also  called the 'Historic Present'.

We use the Present tense for a past event  to bring the story, this past story, to life.

過去の出来事に現在形を使用 して、物語、この過去の物語に命を吹き込みます。

You may have noticed this in jokes.

For example sometimes you hear: A man  goes into a bar and asks for a cold beer.

Instead of: A man went into a  bar and asked for a cold beer.

Now, make sure you don't use the  Narrative Present for ordinary everyday events.

This is only appropriate when you want to

speak about an extraordinary  event or a very interesting event.

You can set the scene in the past.

You can start your first  sentence in the Past tense,

and then switch to the Present  tense and then stay in the present.

Right, let's look at an example.

For example here is a story in the past,

and usually we use Past Simple and  Past Continuous to tell such stories.

Let me read it out for you:

The other day, I went for a walk in the park.

: 先日、公園に散歩に行きました。 後ろから大きな水しぶきが聞こえた

I was walking along the lake when  I heard a loud splash behind me.

とき、湖に沿って歩いてい ました。

I turned around and saw this man in the lake.

振り向くと、湖の中にこの男が見えました。

He had all his clothes on and he was  swimming towards the middle of the lake.

彼はすべての服を着て 、 湖の真ん中に向かって泳いでいました。

So, I shouted, 'are you o.k.?'

それで、私は「大丈夫ですか？」と叫びました。

He didn't answer, but then I noticed something else in the lake.

彼は答えなかった が、私は湖の中に何か他のものがあることに気がついた.

A dog, and it seemed to be in trouble...

犬、そしてそれは困っているように見えました...

Now we can make this story a lot more interesting. 

これで、この物語をもっと面白くすることができます。

We can bring it to life by changing all  the Past tenses into Present tenses.

すべての過去時制を現在時制に変えることで、それを生き生きとさせることができ ます。

As you can imagine, Past Simple  changes to Present Simple,

and Past Continuous changes to Present Continuous.

変わり、過去継続形は現在進行形に変わります。

So, now let me read it to you  again. This time in the Present.

それでは、もう一度お読みいたします 。 今回は 現在。

So, we start again in the Past. 

ですから、私たちは過去から再び始めます。

The first sentence and then we  switch to the Present tenses.

最初の文、次に 現在時制に切り替えます。

The other day, I went for a walk in the park.

So, I'm walking along the lake when  I hear a loud splash behind me.

So, in summary:

The Present Simple and Present  Continuous tenses are used 

90% of the time to speak about present events.

と、現在の出来事について話すために現在時制と現在継続時制が 90% の時間で使用されます。

But make sure that you distinguish  between facts and habits (Present Simple), 

ただし 、事実と習慣（現在形）

and actions in progress (Present Continuous).

と進行中の行動（現在形）を区別するようにしてください。

9% of the time we use these  two tenses for future events.

Present Continuous for arrangements in the future.

And only 1% of the time do we use the Present  tenses to speak about a past event,

Of course, you need to be aware of this usage, but you don't need to necessarily use it yourself.

If you're telling a story in  the past, it's perfectly fine
