'I'm doing' when you talk about present events?

Are you aware that these two  tenses, 'I do' and 'I'm' doing,

can also be used to speak about  future events and even past events.

Now, let's start by looking at  how we use 'I do' and 'I'm doing' 

이제 현재 이벤트에 대해 이야기할 때 'I do'와 'I'm doing'을 어떻게 사용하는지 살펴보겠습니다

when we're talking about present events.

We use Present Simple. That is: I do,  he does, etc. for facts and habits.

우리는 Present Simple을 사용합니다. 즉, 사실과 습관을 위해 나는 한다, 그는 한다 등입니다.

For example:

예:

I work in a software firm. That's a fact.

저는 소프트웨어 회사에서 일합니다. 사실입니다.

Or:

또는:

We don't live in a big town. That's also a fact.

A habit can be: He plays golf every Saturday.

습관은 다음과 같습니다. 그는 매주 토요일에 골프를 칩니다.

Or: She doesn't often take the train.

So, what about Present Continuous. That is: I am doing, he is doing, etc.

그렇다면 Present Continuous는 어떻습니까? 즉, I am doing, he is doing 등입니다.

We use the Present Continuous  tense for actions in progress.

진행 중인 작업에는 현재 시제를 사용합니다.

For example: I'm currently working from home.

예: 현재 재택근무 중입니다.

Or: He is playing golf now.

또는: 그는 지금 골프를 치고 있습니다.

Now, make sure that you don't use the  Present Continuous tense with state verbs.

이제 상태 동사와 함께 현재 진행 시제를 사용하지 않도록 하세요.

You can only use Continuous  tenses with action verbs.

동작 동사와 함께 진행 시제만 사용할 수 있습니다.

For example think about the verb 'think'.

예를 들어 '생각하다'라는 동사를 생각해보세요.

'Think' has two meanings. One is to reflect:

'생각'에는 두 가지 의미가 있습니다. 하나는 반영하는 것입니다.

What are you thinking about?

무엇을 생각하고 있습니까?

You can say that in the Present Continuous tense: What are you thinking about at the moment?

현재 진행 시제로 다음과 같이 말할 수 있습니다. 지금 무슨 생각을 하고 계세요?

But, 'think' also means to have an opinion.

그러나 '생각하다'는 의견이 있다는 뜻이기도 합니다.

So, you cannot use that in the Continuous form.

따라서 연속 형식에서는 사용할 수 없습니다. 다음과 같이

You can't say: What are you thinking of this idea?

말할 수 없습니다. 이 아이디어에 대해 어떻게 생각하세요?

You have to use it only in the Simple form:

단순한 형식으로만 사용해야 합니다.

Right! Let's look at how we use  these two tenses for future events

starting with the Present Continuous tense.

현재 진행 시제로 시작하여 미래 사건에 이 두 시제를 어떻게 사용하는지 살펴보겠습니다.

We use the Present Continuous tense to  talk about arrangements in the future.

우리는 미래의 배열에 대해 이야기하기 위해 현재 진행 시제를 사용합니다.

For example: He is playing in a  golf tournament next Saturday.

예: 그는 다음 주 토요일에 골프 토너먼트에 참가합니다.

Or: She is taking the train to London tomorrow.

또는: 그녀는 내일 런던행 기차를 탈 예정입니다.

So, when do we use the Present Simple?

그렇다면 Present Simple은 언제 사용합니까?

We use the Present Simple to  speak about scheduled events.

우리는 예정된 이벤트에 대해 말하기 위해 Present Simple을 사용합니다.

For example: The tournament  starts at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.

예: 토너먼트는 토요일 오전 9시에 시작됩니다.

Or: The train leaves at 2 p.m. tomorrow.

또는: 기차는 오후 2시에 출발합니다. 내일.

Okay! Let's put these two  usages together in a dialogue.

좋아요! 이 두 가지 사용법을 대화에 함께 넣어 보겠습니다.

So, for the present and the future.

따라서 현재와 미래를 위해.

So, the dialogue can go like this:

따라서 대화는 다음과 같이 진행될 수 있습니다.

Do you have a second now?

이제 시간이 있습니까?

No, sorry! I'm packing my bags.

아니, 미안! 가방을 싸고 있습니다.

Can I see you this evening then?

그럼 오늘 저녁에 볼 수 있을까요?

No, I'm catching the train  to St Andrews this evening.

아니요, 오늘 저녁에 St Andrews로 가는 기차를 탈 예정입니다.

Oh! Are you taking part in the golf tournament?

오! 골프 토너먼트에 참가하고 있습니까?

Of course! I take part every year.

물론! 매년 참여하고 있습니다.

Good luck! What time does the train leave?

행운을 빌어요! 기차가 몇시에 떠나나요?

It leaves at 6.

6시에 떠납니다.

Right! That's it for using these two  tenses for present and future events.

맞습니다! 현재와 ​​미래의 사건에 대해 이 두 시제를 사용하기 위한 것입니다.

Now, strangely, sometimes you will  hear them used for past events.

이제 이상하게도 가끔 과거 행사에 사용되는 소리를 듣게 될 것입니다.

This is usually when we want to  tell a story, a compelling story.

이것은 일반적으로 우리가 이야기, 설득력 있는 이야기를 하고 싶을 때입니다.

And the Present tense here  is called the 'Narrative

Present' sometimes also  called the 'Historic Present'.

We use the Present tense for a past event  to bring the story, this past story, to life.

우리는 과거 사건에 대한 현재 시제를 사용하여 이야기, 이 과거 이야기에 생명을 불어넣습니다.

You may have noticed this in jokes.

당신은 농담에서 이것을 알아 차렸을 것입니다.

For example sometimes you hear: A man  goes into a bar and asks for a cold beer.

Instead of: A man went into a  bar and asked for a cold beer.

Now, make sure you don't use the  Narrative Present for ordinary everyday events.

이제 일상적인 이벤트에 Narrative Present를 사용하지 않도록 하세요.

This is only appropriate when you want to

speak about an extraordinary  event or a very interesting event.

특별한 사건이나 매우 흥미로운 사건에 대해 이야기하고 싶을 때만 적합합니다.

You can set the scene in the past. 

과거의 장면을 설정할 수 있습니다.

You can start your first  sentence in the Past tense,

과거 시제로 첫 문장을 시작한

and then switch to the Present  tense and then stay in the present.

다음 현재 시제로 전환한 다음 현재에 머무를 수 있습니다.

Right, let's look at an example.

예를 들어 보겠습니다.

For example here is a story in the past,  

예를 들어 여기 과거의 이야기가 있습니다.

and usually we use Past Simple and  Past Continuous to tell such stories.

일반적으로 우리는 과거 단순 및 과거 연속을 사용하여 그러한 이야기를 전합니다.

Let me read it out for you:

제가 읽어드리겠습니다.

The other day, I went for a walk in the park.

저번에 저는 공원에 산책을 갔습니다.

I was walking along the lake when  I heard a loud splash behind me.

호수를 따라 걷고 있을 때 뒤에서 큰 물이 튀는 소리가 들렸습니다.

I turned around and saw this man in the lake.

나는 돌아서서 호수에서 이 남자를 보았다.

He had all his clothes on and he was  swimming towards the middle of the lake.

그는 옷을 모두 입고 호수 한가운데를 향해 헤엄치고 있었습니다.

So, I shouted, 'are you o.k.?'

그래서 '괜찮아요?'

He didn't answer, but then I noticed something else in the lake.

그는 대답하지 않았지만 나는 호수에서 다른 것을 발견했습니다.

A dog, and it seemed to be in trouble...

개, 그리고 곤경에 처한 것 같았습니다...

Now we can make this story a lot more interesting. 

이제 우리는 이 이야기를 훨씬 더 흥미롭게 만들 수 있습니다.

We can bring it to life by changing all  the Past tenses into Present tenses.

모든 과거 시제를 현재 시제로 변경하여 생명을 불어넣을 수 있습니다.

As you can imagine, Past Simple  changes to Present Simple, 

상상할 수 있듯이 Past Simple은 Present Simple로,

and Past Continuous changes to Present Continuous.

Past Continuous는 Present Continuous로 변경됩니다.

So, now let me read it to you  again. This time in the Present.

이제 다시 읽어 드리겠습니다 . 이번에는 현재입니다.

So, we start again in the Past. 

그래서 우리는 과거에서 다시 시작합니다.

The first sentence and then we  switch to the Present tenses.

첫 번째 문장은 현재 시제로 전환합니다.

The other day, I went for a walk in the park.

So, I'm walking along the lake when  I hear a loud splash behind me.

So, in summary:

The Present Simple and Present  Continuous tenses are used

90% of the time to speak about present events.

But make sure that you distinguish  between facts and habits (Present Simple),

and actions in progress (Present Continuous).

9% of the time we use these  two tenses for future events.

Present Continuous for arrangements in the future.

And Present Simple for scheduled events.

And only 1% of the time do we use the Present  tenses to speak about a past event,

in order to bring a past story to life.

Of course, you need to be aware of this usage, but you don't need to necessarily use it yourself.
