English Conversation Tips | Wish & Hope

Okay! Hope and wish.

¡Bueno! Esperanza y deseo.

We use both verbs when we want something to happen.

Usamos ambos verbos cuando queremos que algo suceda.

If this thing is possible and likely, we use 'hope'.

Si esto es posible y probable, usamos 'esperanza'.

For example, speaking to your school friend you will say:

Por ejemplo, hablando con un amigo de la escuela, le dirás

It's my birthday next week. I hope you're free and can come to my party.

: la semana que viene es mi cumpleaños. Espero que estés libre y puedas venir a mi fiesta.

So, if this thing that we want to happen is impossible or unlikely, we use 'wish'.

Entonces, si esto que queremos que suceda es imposible o improbable, usamos 'deseo'.

For example, if you're speaking to your sister who is abroad at the moment we would say:

Por ejemplo, si estás hablando con tu hermana que está en el extranjero en este momento , diríamos

It's my birthday next week. I wish you were here and could come to my party.

: la semana que viene es mi cumpleaños. Ojalá estuvieras aquí y pudieras venir a mi fiesta.

Okay! Now let's have a look at what tenses we use after 'hope'.

¡Bueno! Ahora echemos un vistazo a los tiempos verbales que usamos después de 'esperanza'.

If we're talking about a future situation, the best tense to use actually is the Present Simple.

Si estamos hablando de una situación futura, el mejor tiempo para usar en realidad es el presente simple.

For example, as we said: I hope you are free and can come to my party.

Por ejemplo, como dijimos: espero que estés libre y puedas venir a mi fiesta.

But, you can also use the Future Simple if you want. You can say: I hope you will be free and will be able to come to my party.

Pero también puedes usar el Futuro Simple si quieres. Puedes decir: Espero que estés libre y puedas venir a mi fiesta.

You can use 'that' to connect 'hope' to the next sentence, but we often drop 'that'.

Puede usar 'eso' para conectar 'esperanza' a la siguiente oración, pero a menudo dejamos caer 'eso'.

Now, if the situation you're talking about is in the present  or in the past, you can use any appropriate tense.

Ahora, si la situación de la que estás hablando está en el presente o en el pasado, puedes usar cualquier tiempo apropiado.

For example, you can say:

Por ejemplo, puedes decir:

I hope you know the answer now.

Espero que sepas la respuesta ahora.

I hope you're listening carefully now.

Espero que estés escuchando con atención ahora.

I hope she hasn't forgotten.

Espero que no se haya olvidado.

I hope he got the job last week.

Espero que haya conseguido el trabajo la semana pasada.

I hope he wasn't lying to us when he said that.

Espero que no nos haya mentido cuando dijo eso.

So, you can use any tense depending on the present or past situation.

Entonces, puedes usar cualquier tiempo dependiendo de la situación presente o pasada.

Now,  if you're expressing a hope for a past situation that didn't happen, you should use 'would'.

Ahora,  si estás expresando una esperanza por una situación pasada que no sucedió, debes usar 'would'.

For example: I hoped he would call me, but he didn't.

Por ejemplo: Esperaba que me llamara, pero no lo hizo.

Or: She was hoping they could help her, but they didn't or they couldn't.

O: esperaba que pudieran ayudarla, pero no lo hicieron o no pudieron.

We had hoped things would improve, but they didn't.

Esperábamos que las cosas mejoraran, pero no fue así.

So, that's all for 'hope'. Let's look at the tenses we use after 'wish'.

Entonces, eso es todo por la 'esperanza'. Veamos los tiempos que usamos después de 'deseo'.

Again, let's say it's a present or future situation.

Nuevamente, digamos que es una situación presente o futura.

Remember we said: I wish you were here and could come to my party next week.

Recuerda que dijimos: Ojalá estuvieras aquí y pudieras venir a mi fiesta la próxima semana.

Now, when we look at this sentence and see 'were' and 'could', we think this is the Past Simple tense.

Ahora, cuando miramos esta oración y vemos 'were' y 'could', pensamos que este es el tiempo pasado simple.

Well actually, it isn't. Actually, it is the Past Subjunctive.

Bueno, en realidad, no lo es. En realidad, es el Pasado de Subjuntivo.

It's the same form that we use in Conditional 2 sentences.

Es la misma forma que usamos en las oraciones condicionales 2.

Now, you can see that this is the Past Subjunctive better if we change the pronoun.

Ahora, puedes ver que este es el Pasado de Subjuntivo mejor si cambiamos el pronombre.

For example, if you're speaking to your friend about your sister.

Por ejemplo, si le hablas a un amigo sobre tu hermana.

We would  say:

Diríamos:

My sister is abroad and won't be back next week.

Mi hermana está en el extranjero y no volverá la próxima semana.

I wish she were here and could come to my party.

Ojalá estuviera aquí y pudiera venir a mi fiesta.

Or: I wish she hadn't gone abroad.

O: Ojalá no se hubiera ido al extranjero.

Now, you can see that the tense is not Past Simple,  but the Past Subjunctive.

Ahora, puedes ver que el tiempo no es Pasado Simple, sino Pasado Subjuntivo.

Having said that, don't be surprised if you don't hear the Subjunctive.

Habiendo dicho eso, no te sorprendas si no escuchas el Subjuntivo.

Most native speakers just use the Simple tense.

La mayoría de los hablantes nativos solo usan el tiempo simple.

So, in everyday spoken English, it's much more common to hear:

Entonces, en el inglés hablado todos los días, es mucho más común escuchar:

I wish my sister was here.

Desearía que mi hermana estuviera aquí.

Using the Past Simple tense, not the Subjunctive.

Usar el tiempo pasado simple, no el subjuntivo.

Now, one other tense that is quite common with 'wish' is 'would'.

Ahora, otro tiempo que es bastante común con 'deseo' es 'sería'.

And you would use this in a present situation  that's annoying you, and you want it to stop.

Y usarías esto en una situación actual que te molesta y quieres que se detenga.

For example, someone keeps calling you, and you want them to stop.

Por ejemplo, alguien te sigue llamando y quieres que se detenga.

You would say: I wish he would stop calling me.

Dirías: Ojalá dejara de llamarme.

Or someone is eating next to you very noisily and this is annoying you. You would say:

O alguien está comiendo a tu lado haciendo mucho ruido y esto te molesta. Dirías:

I wish you wouldn't eat like that.

Ojalá no comieras así.

We can also use the infinitive with 'hope' and 'wish'.

También podemos usar el infinitivo con 'esperanza' y 'deseo'.

With 'hope' it's quite straightforward. If you have the same pronoun, for example: I hope I will get a promotion.

Con 'esperanza' es bastante sencillo. Si tiene el mismo pronombre, por ejemplo: Espero obtener un ascenso.

You can just simply go to the infinitive:

Simplemente puede ir al infinitivo:

I hope to get a promotion.

Espero obtener una promoción.

Okay, but be careful with using 'wish' with the infinitive.

Está bien, pero tenga cuidado al usar 'deseo' con el infinitivo.

So, for example, if the context is you're wishing you were younger:

Entonces, por ejemplo, si el contexto es que desearías ser más joven:

I wish I were younger.

Desearía ser más joven.

If you suddenly say: I wish to  be younger.

Si de repente dices: Deseo ser más joven.

The meaning has changed from I wish, it's an impossible dream to I want.

El significado ha cambiado de Deseo, es un sueño imposible a Deseo.

For example, you can say:

Por ejemplo, puedes decir:

I want to impress my boss. I wish to impress my boss.

Quiero impresionar a mi jefe. Deseo impresionar a mi jefe.

I want to show off my skills. I wish to show off my skills.

Quiero mostrar mis habilidades. Deseo mostrar mis habilidades.

Because these are possible things. They are not unlikely.

Porque estas son cosas posibles. No son improbables.

But, for a context like:

Pero, para un contexto como:

I wish I were younger. I wish this were different.

Me gustaría ser más joven. Ojalá esto fuera diferente.

You can't use 'to' without changing the meaning.

No puedes usar 'to' sin cambiar el significado.

Right! That's all for the tenses and forms that we use with 'hope' and 'wish'.

¡Derecho! Eso es todo por los tiempos y formas que usamos con 'esperanza' y 'deseo'.

Let's look at some common expressions with 'wish'.

Veamos algunas expresiones comunes con 'deseo'.

These are:

Estos son:

I wish you a pleasant trip.

Les deseo un buen viaje.

I wish you a lovely day.

Te deseo un dia con mucho amor.

I wish you a Happy New Year.

Te deseo un feliz año nuevo.

I wish you all the best with your new job.

Te deseo lo mejor en tu nuevo trabajo.

I wish you amazing success.

Te deseo un éxito increíble.

I wish you many happy returns. We usually use this expression

Te deseo muchas felicidades. Usualmente usamos esta expresión

when it's someone's birthday and we're hoping  that they will have many more birthdays.

cuando es el cumpleaños de alguien y esperamos que cumpla muchos más.

Okay, let's end the lesson with a typical conversation  that brings in all of this together:

De acuerdo, terminemos la lección con una conversación típica que reúne todo esto

I'd hoped I'd get an A in physics, but I only got a B.

: esperaba obtener una A en física, pero solo obtuve una B. ¡

That's a great mark! I wish I were doing that well in my tests.

Es una excelente nota! Desearía estar haciéndolo bien en mis exámenes.

You know I'm hoping to study astrophysics at university,

Sabes que espero estudiar astrofísica en la universidad,

but I doubt I have the brains.

pero dudo que tenga el cerebro.

I wish I were a bit smarter.

Desearía ser un poco más inteligente.

You are very smart! I wish you would stop putting yourself down all the time.

Do you really mean it? I hope you're not just flattering me.

Of course not! I know you will do well in any subject you wish to study.
