English Conversation Tips | Wish & Hope

Okay! Hope and wish.

좋아요! 희망과 소원.

We use both verbs when we want something to happen.

어떤 일이 일어나기를 원할 때 두 동사를 모두 사용합니다.

If this thing is possible and likely, we use 'hope'.

이것이 가능하고 가능성이 있다면 '희망'을 사용합니다.

For example, speaking to your school friend you will say:

예를 들어 학교 친구에게 다음과 같이 말할 수 있습니다.

It's my birthday next week. I hope you're free and can come to my party.

다음 주에 제 생일입니다. 나는 당신이 자유롭고 내 파티에 올 수 있기를 바랍니다.

So, if this thing that we want to happen is impossible or unlikely, we use 'wish'.

따라서 우리가 원하는 일이 불가능하거나 있을 법하지 않은 경우 'wish'를 사용합니다.

For example, if you're speaking to your sister who is abroad at the moment we would say:

예를 들어 현재 해외에 있는 여동생과 이야기하고 있다면 다음과 같이 말할 수 있습니다.

It's my birthday next week. I wish you were here and could come to my party.

다음 주 내 생일입니다. 네가 여기 있고 내 파티에 올 수 있었으면 좋겠어.

Okay! Now let's have a look at what tenses we use after 'hope'.

좋아요! 이제 '희망' 뒤에 어떤 시제가 사용되는지 살펴보겠습니다.

If we're talking about a future situation, the best tense to use actually is the Present Simple.

미래 상황에 대해 이야기하는 경우 실제로 사용하기 가장 좋은 시제는 Present Simple입니다.

For example, as we said: I hope you are free and can come to my party.

예를 들어, 우리가 말했듯이: 나는 당신이 자유롭고 내 파티에 올 수 있기를 바랍니다.

But, you can also use the Future Simple if you want. You can say: I hope you will be free and will be able to come to my party.

그러나 원하는 경우 Future Simple을 사용할 수도 있습니다. 다음과 같이 말할 수 있습니다. 당신이 자유롭고 제 파티에 올 수 있기를 바랍니다.

You can use 'that' to connect 'hope' to the next sentence, but we often drop 'that'.

'that'을 사용하여 'hope'를 다음 문장에 연결할 수 있지만 'that'을 생략하는 경우가 많습니다.

Now, if the situation you're talking about is in the present  or in the past, you can use any appropriate tense.

이제 이야기하는 상황이 현재 또는 과거라면 적절한 시제를 사용할 수 있습니다.

For example, you can say:

예를 들어 다음과 같이 말할 수 있습니다.

I hope you know the answer now.

지금 답을 알고 계시길 바랍니다.

I hope you're listening carefully now.

지금 잘 들으시길 바랍니다.

I hope she hasn't forgotten.

그녀가 잊지 않았기를 바랍니다.

I hope he got the job last week.

그가 지난 주에 일자리를 얻었기를 바랍니다. 그가

I hope he wasn't lying to us when he said that.

그렇게 말했을 때 우리에게 거짓말을 한 것이 아니었기를 바랍니다.

So, you can use any tense depending on the present or past situation.

따라서 현재 또는 과거 상황에 따라 모든 시제를 사용할 수 있습니다.

Now,  if you're expressing a hope for a past situation that didn't happen, you should use 'would'.

이제 일어나지 않은 과거 상황에 대한 희망을 표현하는 경우에는 'would'를 사용해야 합니다.

For example: I hoped he would call me, but he didn't.

예: 나는 그가 전화하기를 바랐지만 그는 전화하지 않았습니다.

Or: She was hoping they could help her, but they didn't or they couldn't.

또는: 그녀는 그들이 그녀를 도울 수 있기를 바랐지만 그들은 그렇지 않았거나 할 수 없었습니다.

We had hoped things would improve, but they didn't.

상황이 개선되기를 바랐지만 그렇지 않았습니다.

So, that's all for 'hope'. Let's look at the tenses we use after 'wish'.

그래서 '희망'을 위한 것입니다. 'wish' 다음에 사용하는 시제를 살펴보겠습니다.

Again, let's say it's a present or future situation.

다시 한 번 현재 또는 미래의 상황이라고 가정해 보겠습니다.

Remember we said: I wish you were here and could come to my party next week.

우리가 다음 주에 내 파티에 올 수 있으면 좋겠다고 말한 것을 기억하세요.

Now, when we look at this sentence and see 'were' and 'could', we think this is the Past Simple tense.

이제 이 문장을 보고 'were'와 'could'를 볼 때 이것이 과거 단순 시제라고 생각합니다.

Well actually, it isn't. Actually, it is the Past Subjunctive.

실제로는 그렇지 않습니다. 사실, 그것은 과거 가정법입니다.

It's the same form that we use in Conditional 2 sentences.

조건부 2문장에서 사용하는 것과 같은 형식입니다.

Now, you can see that this is the Past Subjunctive better if we change the pronoun.

이제 대명사를 바꾸면 이것이 과거 가정법임을 더 잘 알 수 있습니다.

For example, if you're speaking to your friend about your sister.

예를 들어 친구에게 동생에 대해 이야기하는 경우입니다.

We would  say:

우리는

My sister is abroad and won't be back next week.

내 여동생이 해외에 있어서 다음 주에 돌아오지 않을 것이라고 말할 것입니다.

I wish she were here and could come to my party.

그녀가 여기 있고 내 파티에 올 수 있었으면 좋겠어요.

Or: I wish she hadn't gone abroad.

또는: 그녀가 해외에 가지 않았더라면 좋았을 텐데.

Now, you can see that the tense is not Past Simple,  but the Past Subjunctive.

이제 시제가 과거 단순이 아니라 과거 가정법이라는 것을 알 수 있습니다 .

Having said that, don't be surprised if you don't hear the Subjunctive.

가정법이 들리지 않더라도 놀라지 마세요.

Most native speakers just use the Simple tense.

대부분의 원어민은 단순 시제를 사용합니다.

So, in everyday spoken English, it's much more common to hear:

따라서 일상적인 영어에서는 다음과 같이 듣는 것이 훨씬 더 일반적입니다. I

I wish my sister was here.

would my sister was here.

Using the Past Simple tense, not the Subjunctive.

가정법이 아닌 과거 단순 시제를 사용합니다.

Now, one other tense that is quite common with 'wish' is 'would'.

이제 'wish'와 함께 흔히 사용되는 또 다른 시제는 'would'입니다.

And you would use this in a present situation  that's annoying you, and you want it to stop.

그리고 당신을 짜증나게 하고 멈추기를 원하는 현재 상황에서 이것을 사용할 것입니다 .

For example, someone keeps calling you, and you want them to stop.

예를 들어 누군가가 계속 전화를 걸고 있는데 전화를 끊어주길 원합니다.

You would say: I wish he would stop calling me.

당신은 이렇게 말할 것입니다: 그가 나에게 전화를 그만했으면 좋겠어요.

Or someone is eating next to you very noisily and this is annoying you. You would say:

또는 옆에서 누군가가 매우 시끄럽게 식사를 하고 있어 짜증이 날 수도 있습니다. 당신은 말할 것입니다 :

I wish you wouldn't eat like that.

나는 당신이 그렇게 먹지 않기를 바랍니다.

We can also use the infinitive with 'hope' and 'wish'.

'희망' 및 '소원'과 함께 부정사를 사용할 수도 있습니다.

With 'hope' it's quite straightforward. If you have the same pronoun, for example: I hope I will get a promotion.

'희망'은 매우 간단합니다. 예를 들어 같은 대명사를 사용하는 경우 : I hope I will get a promotion.

You can just simply go to the infinitive:

단순히 부정사로 갈 수 있습니다:

I hope to get a promotion.

I hope to get a promotion.

Okay, but be careful with using 'wish' with the infinitive.

좋습니다. 하지만 부정사와 함께 'wish'를 사용할 때는 주의하세요.

So, for example, if the context is you're wishing you were younger:

예를 들어 문맥이 당신이 더 젊었으면 하는 경우:

I wish I were younger.

I wish I were 어렸으면 합니다.

If you suddenly say: I wish to  be younger.

갑자기 어렸으면 좋겠어요.

The meaning has changed from I wish, it's an impossible dream to I want.

I wish에서 I want로 의미가 변경되었습니다. 불가능한 꿈입니다.

For example, you can say:

예를 들어 다음과 같이 말할 수 있습니다.

I want to impress my boss. I wish to impress my boss.

상사에게 깊은 인상을 남기고 싶습니다. 상사에게 깊은 인상을 남기고 싶습니다.

I want to show off my skills. I wish to show off my skills.

내 실력을 뽐내고 싶다. 내 실력을 뽐내고 싶다.

Because these are possible things. They are not unlikely.

가능한 일이기 때문입니다. 그럴 가능성은 없습니다.

But, for a context like:

하지만 다음과 같은 맥락에서는 더

I wish I were younger. I wish this were different.

어렸으면 좋았을 텐데. 나는 이것이 달랐으면 좋겠다.

You can't use 'to' without changing the meaning.

의미를 바꾸지 않고는 'to'를 사용할 수 없습니다.

Right! That's all for the tenses and forms that we use with 'hope' and 'wish'.

오른쪽! 이것이 우리가 '희망'과 '소망'과 함께 사용하는 시제와 형식에 대한 전부입니다.

Let's look at some common expressions with 'wish'.

'소원'과 관련된 몇 가지 일반적인 표현을 살펴보겠습니다.

These are:

I wish you a pleasant trip.

나는 당신에게 즐거운 여행을 기원합니다.

I wish you a lovely day.

나는 당신에게 멋진 하루를 기원합니다.

I wish you a Happy New Year.

새해 복 많이 받으세요.

I wish you all the best with your new job.

새 직장에서 최선을 다하길 바랍니다.

I wish you amazing success.

놀라운 성공을 기원합니다.

I wish you many happy returns. We usually use this expression

많은 행복한 반품을 기원합니다. 우리는 보통 이 표현을

when it's someone's birthday and we're hoping  that they will have many more birthdays.

누군가의 생일일 때 사용하며 더 많은 생일을 맞이하기를 바랍니다.

Okay, let's end the lesson with a typical conversation  that brings in all of this together:

자, 이 모든 것을 하나로 모으는 일반적인 대화로 수업을 마치겠습니다 .

I'd hoped I'd get an A in physics, but I only got a B.

물리학에서 A를 받고 싶었지만 B만 받았습니다.

That's a great mark! I wish I were doing that well in my tests.

You know I'm hoping to study astrophysics at university,

내가 대학에서 천체물리학을 공부하고 싶어하는 건 알겠지만, 나에게

but I doubt I have the brains.

I wish I were a bit smarter.

내가 좀 더 똑똑했으면 좋겠어요.

You are very smart! I wish you would stop putting yourself down all the time.

당신은 매우 똑똑합니다! 나는 당신이 항상 자신을 낮추지 않기를 바랍니다.

Do you really mean it? I hope you're not just flattering me.

정말 진심인가요? 당신이 저를 아첨하지 않기를 바랍니다.

Of course not! I know you will do well in any subject you wish to study.

당연히 아니지! 나는 당신이 공부하고 싶은 어떤 과목이든 잘 할 것이라는 것을 압니다.
