Let's look at formulation first

You remember from the previous video that the present perfect is

Now let's look at past simple

Past simple there are two types of verbs

regular verbs and

irregular verbs

For regular verbs you simply add "ed" to the end of the infinitive for example:

I played tennis

and it's the same form for all pronouns

Let's look at the past simple

Veamos el pasado simple:

Past simple is similar to present perfect

El pasado simple es similar al presente perfecto

in that it also refers to a completed action in the past

en que en ambos se refieren a acciones completadas en el pasado

But this time there is a clear reference to the specific time of the action in the past

pero esta vez hay una referencia a un tiempo especifico en el pasado

Let's look at the examples

Veamos los ejemplos:

First example:

Primer ejemplo:

I've studied three sections until now

He estudiado 3 secciones hasta ahora

The action is complete, but we don't know when

La acción fue completada pero no sabemos cuando

If we add "the when element" if we specify the time in the past

Si añadimos el elemento "cuando" , si especificamos el tiempo en el pasado

the tense changes to past simple

La oración cambia a pasado simple

Let's watch the change

I studied three sections last night

Estudié 3 secciones la noche anterior

Let's look at the second example

I've already done half of the exercises

Ya he terminado la mitad de los ejercicios

Let's add a specific time in the past

Vamos a agregar el tiempo específico en el pasado:

and the verb changes to

I did half of the exercises before lunch

and our final example:

He has driven 500 kilometers so far

Let's add the specific time in the past and watch the change from present perfect to past

Let's look at the timelines for a better picture of the differences

Here's the present perfect

an action in the past

completed at some point

We don't know when or we don't care to mention when

No sabemos cuando o no nos importa mencionarlo

the action is complete

La acción es completada al momento de hablar

at the time of speaking

Now

Ahora

if we mentioned that specific time in the past if it fits out past time we

Si mencionamos el tiempo específico en el pasado, si allí cabe el tiempo pasado

we must change to past

Necesitamos cambiar a pasado simple

Action completed at a specific time in the past

Acción completada en un tiempo específico en el pasado

There is no longer any connection with now

Let's look at some common mistakes

The most common mistake is using the present perfect

El error mas común es usar el presente perfecto en vez del pasado simple

Instead of the past simple

for example saying something like

Por ejemplo decir algo como:

We have bought this car two months ago

Hemos comprado este automóvil hace dos meses

Because we are mentioning a specific time in the past

Debido a que mencionamos un tiempo específico en el pasado

Two months ago

Dos meses atrás

We should use the past simple

deberíamos usar el pasado simple

We bought this car two months ago

Compramos este automóvil hace dos meses

another example

Otro ejemplo:

He dormido bien la noche anterior

I have slept well last night

Once again last night refers to a specific time in the past

Una vez mas, "la noche anterior" se refiere a un tiempos específico en el pasado

so we need to use the past simple

Así que necesitamos usar el pasado simple

I slept well last night

Dormí bien la noche anterior

Another example

Otro ejemplo:

She has met him when she was at college

Ella lo ha conocido mientras estaba en la universidad

Again when she was at College

De nuevo, cuando ella estaba en la universidad

refers to a specific period of time in the past

se refiere a un tiempo específico en el pasado

and therefore, we should use past simple

She met him when she was at College

The mistake can be made the other way around

Using the past simple where present perfect is required

Already means sometime in the past

Therefore we should use

I have already called him

I must point out that

I already called him is some time is acceptable in American English

"I already called him"

Let's look at two other examples

Where the past tense is used

Cuando el tiempo pasado es usado

She just came back you might hear this especially in America

"She just came back"

puede que lo hayas escuchado, especialmente en America

but really the correct tense is

pero realmente la oración correcta es:

she has just come back

"She has just come back"

because just

Porque "just" no se refiere a un tiempo específico del pasado

Doesn't refer to a specific time in the past

It tells us that the action is complete

Nos dice que la acción fue completada no hace mucho tiempo

Not a long time ago

And let's look at our last example

Veamos el último ejemplo:

Prices went up this month

los precios subieron este mes

This month is not a reference in the past

"Este mes" no es uan referencia en el pasado

the month continues, it's a present time

It means until now in this month, so we should use the present perfect

Prices have gone up this month
