One of the most common grammar mistakes

that English learners make

is to do with the subject verb agreement.

What's that?

It's as simple as it sounds!

انها بسيطة كما يبدو!

The subject and the verb in English sentences

الموضوع والفعل في الجمل الإنجليزية

must agree.

يجب أن نتفق.

They must match.

يجب أن يتطابقوا

We go to the beach on Saturdays.

نذهب إلى الشاطئ يوم السبت.

If the subject is plural,

إذا كان الموضوع بصيغة الجمع ،

you need to use a plural verb form.

تحتاج إلى استخدام صيغة فعل الجمع.

He goes to the beach on Saturdays.

يذهب إلى الشاطئ أيام السبت.

He goes.

يذهب.

The subject is singular,

الموضوع مفرد ،

so you need to use a singular verb form.

لذلك تحتاج إلى استخدام صيغة فعل مفردة.

And this is true, most of the time!

وهذا صحيح ، معظم الوقت!

Now, you might be thinking that you

لآن ، قد تفكر أنك

understand subject verb agreement.

فهم اتفاق الفعل الموضوعي.

It's simple, it's easy, right?

But it's the first thing that many English learners forget!

But don't worry, there are some simple

standard rules that you can use to help you.

But some aspects of singular and plural noun usage

make this a little more complex.

So that's why I'm going to teach you some tips

to master subject verb agreement in English.

Before we start,

I want to highlight that there are two main areas

where subject verb agreement can cause you problems.

The first is in your writing.

And it's important to know

and how to use them correctly

so that your English writing is grammatically correct.

Now, perhaps you feel confident that you know

how to match verbs to their subject

but the challenge is making that clear

when you're speaking.

you might not even know this is a problem for you.

The final consonant sounds are so important

Let's begin.

In the present tense,

nouns and verbs agree

in opposite ways.

When your subject is plural,

عندما يكون موضوعك بصيغة الجمع ،

you usually add S to show that it's plural, right?

عادة ما تضيف S لتظهر أنها جمع ، أليس كذلك؟

Car becomes cars.

تصبح السيارة سيارات.

Baby becomes babies.

يصبح الطفل رضيعًا.

But when your subject is plural,

ولكن عندما يكون موضوعك بصيغة الجمع ،

you do not add an S to your verb.

The cars look expensive.

Our noun, cars,

اسمنا ، سياراتنا ،

is plural.

Cars.

Now our verb agrees with our subject.

The cars look expensive.

تبدو السيارات باهظة الثمن.

Now compare this to:

قارن الآن هذا بـ:

The car looks expensive.

تبدو السيارة باهظة الثمن.

When our noun is singular,

عندما يكون اسمنا مفردًا ،

our verb needs to include an S.

فعلنا يحتاج إلى تضمين S.

In these examples,

في هذه الأمثلة ،

the noun and the verb agree in opposite ways.

الاسم والفعل يتفقان على نقيض.

But I can already hear you saying

ولكن يمكنني أن أسمعك تقول بالفعل

"What about if your subject is I or you?

"ماذا لو كان موضوعك أنا أم أنت؟

They're singular subjects

إنهم مواضيع فردية

but they don't use the singular verb form."

لكنهم لا يستخدمون صيغة الفعل المفرد ".

Yes,

but they're an exception to the rule.

نعم،

لكنها استثناء للقاعدة.

Subject verb agreement rules are different

قواعد اتفاق الفعل الموضوعي مختلفة

when your subject is in the third-person singular.

عندما يكون موضوعك في صيغة الشخص الثالث المفرد.

So that's when your subject is a he,

وذلك عندما يكون موضوعك هو ،

a she or an it.

هي أو أنها.

The subjects I and you are different.

الموضوعات أنا وأنت مختلفة.

Even though they're also singular nouns,

they take the plural form of the verb

and you just need to remember that.

I like to go swimming.

Both of these subjects are singular

but the verb forms are different.

Now,

if there is an auxiliary verb,

a helping verb,

فعل مساعد ،

in your sentence

في جملتك

like do or does

in the present simple

or am, is, are, was, were in the continuous tenses

or have or has

أو لديها أو لديها

in the perfect tenses

then,

you need to think about your subject verb agreement

because the auxiliary verb

becomes the agreeing verb,

the verb that agrees with the subject.

The dogs don't want it.

The dog doesn't want it.

We're going to the beach.

He is going to the beach.

Anna and Tony have been driving for hours.

كانت آنا وتوني تقودان لساعات.

Anna has been driving for hours.

كانت آنا تقود منذ ساعات.

Now modal verbs

الآن الأفعال مشروط

like may, could, will, must, should,

مثل مايو ، يمكن ، سوف ، يجب ، يجب ،

they're also auxiliary verbs.

هم أيضا أفعال مساعدة.

They help the main verb in the sentence

يساعدون الفعل الرئيسي في الجملة

but the subject verb agreement rules are different

لكن قواعد اتفاق الفعل الموضوعي مختلفة

with modal auxiliary verbs.

بأفعال مساعدة مشروطة.

The verb following a modal verb

الفعل الذي يلي فعل مشروط

is never in the S form.

ليس في شكل S أبدًا.

It's always in the infinitive form.

إنها دائمًا بصيغة المصدر.

My friends might come.

قد يأتي أصدقائي.

My friend might come.

قد يأتي صديقي.

Not my friend might comes.

قد لا يأتي صديقي.

You should come.

يجب عليك أن تأتي.

He should come.

يجب أن يأتي.

Not he should comes.

لا يجب أن يأتي.

Now, English sentences are not always this simple,

الآن ، الجمل الإنجليزية ليست دائما بهذه البساطة ،

are they?

As you add more information to your sentences,

they become more complex

and it might be difficult to know whether your noun is

singular or plural.

But just remember that the same structure

and rules apply.

But you need to pay close attention

to where your subject is

and if it's singular or plural

because your verb must always match the subject

regardless of the words

that come in between

the verb and the subject.

It must always match.

Do you know what an indefinite pronoun is?

هل تعرف ما هو الضمير لأجل غير مسمى؟

They're words like

إنها كلمات مثل

everybody, nobody

الجميع ، لا أحد

anybody, someone.

أي شخص ، أي شخص.

Usually indefinite pronouns

عادة الضمائر إلى أجل غير مسمى

take singular verbs.

خذ الأفعال المفردة.

Everybody wants to be loved.

الجميع يريد أن يكون محبوبا.

Nobody likes to be left out.

لا أحد يحب أن يستبعد.

Now the subject of English sentences

الآن موضوع الجمل الإنجليزية

can be a little more complicated

يمكن أن يكون أكثر تعقيدًا

with compound subjects.

مع الموضوعات المركبة.

Group nouns and relative clauses.

الأسماء الجماعية والبنود النسبية.

Look at this sentence.

انظر إلى هذه الجملة.

My mum is happy for me.

أمي سعيدة بالنسبة لي.

My mum and dad are proud of me.

أمي وأبي فخوران بي.

Two singular subjects

موضوعان منفردان

joined by "and"

انضم بواسطة "و"

means that your subject becomes plural

يعني أن موضوعك يصبح بصيغة الجمع

and now your verb needs to show this.

والآن الفعل يجب أن يظهر هذا.

It's the same as saying that

إنه نفس قول ذلك

they are proud of me.

إنهم فخورون بي.

So we can say that

لذا يمكننا أن نقول ذلك

two or more singular subjects

موضوعين أو أكثر

joined with "and"

انضم مع "و"

become a plural subject

تصبح موضوع الجمع

and they need a plural verb.

ويحتاجون فعل الجمع.

Now look at this sentence.

الآن انظر إلى هذه الجملة.

Peter or Paul is coming.

بيتر أو بول قادم.

Now in this sentence,

الآن في هذه الجملة ،

the two singular subjects

الموضوعين المفردين

are treated as a singular subject

يتم التعامل معها كموضوع مفرد

because "or" gives us an option.

لأن "أو" يعطينا خيارًا.

We're not saying both.

نحن لا نقول كليهما.

It's one singular noun or the other.

إنه اسم مفرد أو آخر.

Not both of them together.

ليس كلاهما معا.

We would say

يمكننا ان نقول

Peter and Paul are coming.

بطرس وبولس قادمان.

or

أو

Peter or Paul is coming.

بيتر أو بول قادم.

Playing football is fun.

لعب كرة القدم ممتع.

Now the same rule applies

الآن نفس القاعدة تنطبق

for gerunds and gerund phrases.

لمصطلحات gerund وعبارات gerund.

When gerunds are the subject,

عندما تكون المضايقات هي الموضوع ،

they take the singular form of the verb.

يأخذون صيغة المفرد من الفعل.

Waiting for the bus is annoying.

انتظار الحافلة أمر مزعج.

But

لكن

when they're linked by "and"

عندما يتم ربطها بواسطة "و"

they also take the plural form.

يأخذون أيضا صيغة الجمع.

Meeting friends after work

لقاء الأصدقاء بعد العمل

and going to the beach

والذهاب إلى الشاطئ

are my favourite things about living here.

Okay, so what about group nouns?

حسنًا ، ماذا عن الأسماء الجماعية؟

Single nouns that are actually

الأسماء الفردية التي هي في الواقع

groups of people or things.

مجموعات من الناس أو الأشياء.

Club,

النادي،

team,

الفريق،

company,

شركة،

family,

أسرة،

crowd,

يحشد،

class.

صف دراسي.

They can be either singular or plural,

يمكن أن تكون إما بصيغة المفرد أو الجمع ،

depending on the meaning of an individual sentence.

اعتمادًا على معنى جملة فردية.

This is because they can describe

هذا لأنهم يستطيعون الوصف

the individuals in the group

الأفراد في المجموعة

and since there's more than one,

وبما أن هناك أكثر من واحد ،

it must be plural.

يجب أن تكون صيغة الجمع.

But it's also possible to use these nouns

ولكن من الممكن أيضًا استخدام هذه الأسماء

as a single group

كمجموعة واحدة

when you're referring to the group as a whole.

Then they're singular.

ثم هم المفردون.

So they can be a little tricky!

For example.

The team is organising the event.

يقوم الفريق بتنظيم الحدث.

So this is referring to just the single unit,

it's a singular noun.

So we need to use the singular verb.

لذلك نحن بحاجة إلى استخدام الفعل المفرد.

The team are meeting today.

يجتمع الفريق اليوم.

So the members of the club are meeting together.

لذا يلتقي أعضاء النادي معًا.

Using the plural form of the verb.

باستخدام صيغة الجمع للفعل.

The teams are meeting today.

تجتمع الفرق اليوم.

So when used plurally,

لذلك عندما تستخدم بصيغة الجمع ،

this means that there are

هذا يعني أن هناك

many of the individual group nouns.

العديد من الأسماء الفردية للمجموعة.

There are more than one team

هناك أكثر من فريق

or family or a club.

أو العائلة أو النادي.

And don't forget that some nouns

ولا تنس أن بعض الأسماء

look like plural nouns

تبدو أسماء الجمع

but they take a singular form.

لكنهم يتخذون صيغة مفردة.

For example, news.

على سبيل المثال ، أخبار.

It seems plural because of the S

يبدو الجمع بسبب S

but we need to treat it as a singular noun.

لكننا نحتاج لمعاملته كاسم مفرد.

You need a singular verb.

أنت بحاجة إلى فعل مفرد.

The news is interesting.

الأخبار مثيرة للاهتمام.

Of course, any uncountable noun is treated this way too.

So don't say the furnitures are comfortable.

Say the furniture is comfortable.

We're getting a little more complex now.

Sometimes

the subject is tricky to find in English sentences.

It's not always before the noun.

Subjects and verbs change positions

in English questions

في أسئلة اللغة الإنجليزية

so you need to make sure you identify

which is the subject

وهو الموضوع

before you choose the verb form.

قبل اختيار صيغة الفعل.

What are the steps we need to follow?

ما هي الخطوات التي يتعين علينا اتباعها؟

In this sentence, "the steps" are the subject

في هذه الجملة ، "الخطوات" هي الموضوع

and the verb is "are"

والفعل هو "هي"

because it's plural.

لأنه جمع.

There are many plants in your garden.

هناك العديد من النباتات في حديقتك.

There is a plant in the bathroom.

يوجد نبات في الحمام.

Look at this sentence.

انظر إلى هذه الجملة.

The car, which belongs to my brother,

السيارة التي يملكها أخي

is not very clean.

ليست نظيفة جدا.

Relative clauses can make it difficult

يمكن أن تجعل العبارات النسبية الأمر صعبًا

to locate the subject and the verb.

لتحديد الموضوع والفعل.

Noun phrases also make this difficult,

عبارات الاسم تجعل هذا الأمر صعبًا أيضًا ،

where a group of words act as a noun.

The new features of the car are impressive.

الميزات الجديدة للسيارة مثيرة للإعجاب.

"The features" are the subject.

It's plural, so it needs a plural verb

الجمع ، لذلك يحتاج فعل الجمع

The more complex that your sentence becomes,

كلما كانت الجملة أكثر تعقيدًا ،

the harder you need to look for the subject and the verb

كلما كنت في حاجة للبحث عن الموضوع والفعل

and make sure that they agree.

والتأكد من موافقتهم.

That was exhausting, wasn't it?

You might need to go for a walk now

قد تحتاج للذهاب في نزهة الآن

to let all of that sink in or watch again.
