We are in many ways trapped inside the lopsided imagination

And as I see it, there are two stories these monopolists sell us

Ease and convenience, just a click away.

And in their wildest dreams,

we merge with technology,

optimizing our potential to be stronger, smarter, superhuman.

The other story, preferred by Hollywood, is grittier, more chaotic.

할리우드가 선호하는 또 다른 이야기는 더 거칠고 혼란스럽습니다.

Conflict and competition run rampant.

갈등과 경쟁이 만연합니다.

It's "Hunger Games" meets "Blade Runner"

'헝거 게임'과 '블레이드 러너'에 '매트릭스를 섞은 것과 같죠.

meets "The Matrix."

People are ruthless and unpredictable.

사람들은 무자비하고 예측할 수 없습니다.

Inequality and precarity are permanent features in our lives.

불평등과 불안정이 이 세계에 영속하는 특성입니다.

이러한 디스토피아적 비전에서 기술은 인류의 학살자입니다.

In this dystopian vision, technology is our slayer,

displacing and dominating humanity.

인류를 내쫓고 지배하죠.

And while these sound like opposing narratives,

이 두 가지 이야기는

they have different endings for sure,

one in which we're saved, one in which we're slayed,

they actually share an underlying logic.

And in both, we give up power.

Both stories assume technology is in the driver's seat,

propelled by a will of its own.

In the utopic and dystopic stories,

technology impacts us for better or worse.

But our impact on technology, the human inputs, shall we say,

The values, assumptions, interests and needs

Rather than agonizing about a coming dystopia

we have to reckon with ustopia.

Ustopia is a word I'm borrowing from Margaret Atwood

to describe the fact that the future is us.

미래가 바로 우리라는 사실을 말합니다.

However loathsome or loving we are, so will we be.

오늘날 우리가 혐오스럽든 사랑스럽든 우리는 미래에도 그럴 것입니다.

Whereas utopias are the stuff of dreams,

dystopias, the stuff of nightmares,

ustopias are what we create together when we're wide awake.

Ustopias invite us into a collective imagination

in which we still have tensions,

그곳에도 여전히 갈등은 있겠지만

but where everyone has what they need to thrive.

When I was a grad student at UC Berkeley in the early 2000s,

I witnessed firsthand how innovation often deepens social inequity.

As the tech sector grew,

people who had lived in the Bay area for generations

At the time, I was researching the social dimensions of biotechnology.

Here were billions of dollars being poured into the future of medicine,

but health care for all was somehow far-fetched.

This is what I mean by a lopsided imagination,

where we can imagine regenerating sick bodies

but not an ailing body politic.

Utopias require inequality and exclusion.

Ustopias center collective well-being over gross concentrations of wealth.

They're built on an understanding

that all of our struggles,

from climate justice to racial justice,

are interconnected.

That we are interconnected.

Take what's happening in Barcelona, Spain,

where a large-scale participatory experiment has been underway

for almost ten years now

using a digital platform called “Decidim,”

which means "we decide" in Catalan,

alongside in-person neighborhood-level deliberations

to create policies that respond to people's actual needs.

And the thing is, technology companies are not driving what's happening.

The collective intelligence of people from all walks of life are.

Proponents call it a “New Deal on Data” that recognizes data sovereignty, privacy,

collective rights to data.

Decidim is open-source software,

so it's already been adapted and used in over 80 other cities,

guaranteeing public transparency in a way commercial platforms don't.

Over 40,000 residents have submitted proposals

on everything from affordable housing to air quality,

and about 70 percent of the government's action plan

Like what happened with Sidewalk Labs in Toronto,

Google's urban development smart city play

that would have collected masses of data

이들은 더 효율적이고 편리한 도시 서비스를 위해

data in order to create more efficient and convenient city services.

자료를 대량으로 수집했을 겁니다.

But which in the end was tech-driven rather than people-driven.

그런데 이는 결국 사람이 아니라 기술이 주도하는 것이었습니다.

Sidewalk Labs staged public input sessions

사이드워크 랩스는 공개 토론회를 열어서

in order to appear responsive to residents' concerns

퀘이사이드 지역에 설치될 최신 감시 장비에 대한

about the newfangled surveillance that would have been embedded

주민들의 우려를 해소하려 하는 것처럼 보이게 했습니다.

into the Quayside neighborhood.

But people saw through the proposal and put an end to the development.

there are ustopias taking shape right here in Atlanta.

Known by some as Silicon Peach

because it’s the fastest-growing urban tech hub in the country,

it’s also the city with the highest income inequality in the nation.

Which shouldn't surprise us when we remember

누군가의 환상이 다른 사람에게는 악몽이 될 때가 흔하다는 걸 기억한다면

that the fantasies of some are so often the nightmares of others.

In many places, tech booms actually exacerbate inequality,

increasing the cost of living, displacing local residents

and creating high tech tools for surveillance and social control.

But that's only half of the story.

Because here in Atlanta, and in many other locales,

we're also witnessing a historic mobilization of residents,

Together, they're reminding us that deadly systems may seem durable,

but they're not inevitable.

And we don’t simply have to click: submit.

We can each work to strengthen the social fabric in our own locale

and create a shared vision in which no one is left behind.

We can follow the example of data justice organizers in Barcelona,

forest defenders in Atlanta,

애틀랜타의 숲 지킴이를 본받아

imagining and crafting the worlds we cannot live without,

우리가 살아갈 수 없는 세상을 해체하는 것처럼

just as we dismantle the ones we cannot live within.

The first step

첫 번째로 할 일은

is to stop policing the borders of our own imagination.

A world without prisons?

Ridiculous.

Schools that foster the genius of every child?

모든 아이들의 천재성을 키우는 학교요?

Naive.

순진한 소리네요.

Work that doesn't drive us into the grave?

우리가 죽지 않게 만드는 연구요?

Impossible.

불가능하죠.

모든 사람에게 음식, 안식처, 그리고 사랑이 있는 사회요?

A society where everyone has food,

shelter, love?

In your dreams.

꿈에서 가능하죠.

Exactly.
