are greater than that of Denmark, where you're based.

So you're a big part of the challenge.

So tell us, how's it going?

Morten Bo Christiansen: Thanks for having us.

And yeah, so we have this dream or vision

of decarbonizing our heavy-emitting business by 2040,

so over the next 17 years.

And I think some find that almost ridiculously ambitious. (Laughs)

We find it quite exciting.

And what is even more exciting is that we're actually starting to do it,

and implementing solutions in our business.

And let me just share some facts with you.

So over the last two years,

we have ordered 25 container ships that can sail on green methanol,

which is our choice of green fuel.

It's a fuel that can be made from either renewable electricity

or sustainable biomass.

19 of those are being produced as we speak.

The first one, we took delivery of three days ago,

so it's happening.

We also just announced the first retrofit of an existing oil vessel

또 최근에는 최초로 기존 선박을 개조하는 계획도 발표했습니다.

that can, in the future, also burn green methanol

미래에는 기름 대신 그린 메탄올도 사용할 수 있게 해서

so we can learn how to do that.

전환 방법을 배울 수 있게 됐어요.

On the land side,

육지에서는 친환경 창고를 짓고 터미널을 전기화하는 중입니다.

we are building green warehouses, we are electrifying our terminals.

We have 425 heavy-duty electric trucks coming into our US market,

대형 전기 트럭 425대를 미국 시장에 도입하고 있습니다.

58 already deployed,

이미 58대를 배치했는데

사실 그중 일부는 지금 시카고의 미시간 호수를 건너고 있습니다.

some of which actually just across Lake Michigan, in Chicago.

We have 25 coming into Germany.

So, you know, lots and lots of things happening

to actually make that a dream come true that Jim spoke about two years ago.

LL: So, progress. This is progress?

MBC: Yeah, and it better be.

MBC: 맞아요, 그래야만 하고요.

Global logistics account for 11 percent of all emissions,

총 탄소 배출량 중 11퍼센트를 세계 무역이 차지하고 있습니다.

so all the trucks and ships and planes and warehouses and ports.

트럭과 선박, 비행기, 물류 창고, 항구 모두 포함해서요.

So we have work to do.

그러니 할 일이 많죠.

LL: So tell us about this first new ship.

LL: 이번에 새로 도입한 선박 이야기를 좀 해주시죠.

MBC: I can do better than telling, I can actually show you.

MBC: 그냥 말로 하는 것보다 직접 보여드릴게요.

I think we have a video of it.

There it is.

So this is not a rendering, this is real steel.

그린 것이 아니고 실제 사진입니다.

And we took delivery of this ship Sunday,

일요일에 이 선박을 인도받았고

and next Sunday,

다음 주 일요일에는 그린 메탄올로 연료를 채우는 첫 작업을

it's going to do the first bunkering of green methanol

대한민국 울산에서 할 겁니다.

in Ulsan, in South Korea.

Then, she's going to head out with our well-trained Maersk crew

그러고 나서 머스크의 숙련된 승무원들이

to set out for Shanghai, to pick up cargo.

상하이로 가서 화물을 싣고

She's going to stop over in Singapore,

싱가포르와 포트 사이드,

in Port Said,

and in Rotterdam, to pick up more green methanol,

로테르담에 들러서 그린 메탄올을 좀 더 실을 겁니다.

because she has to make it halfway around the world

9월 13일에 코펜하겐에서 선박 명명식을 하려면

to arrive in Copenhagen on September 13th for name-giving.

지구 반 바퀴를 돌아야 하거든요.

And then, she will be deployed in the Baltic Sea for operation.

그 후 발트해에 배치돼서 운항할 예정입니다.

LL: I can see we've got a beautiful map of that route.

LL: 그 경로를 보여주는 멋진 항해도가 여기 있네요.

MBC: Yeah, and if I can --

MBC: 맞아요, 그리고,

This is just one ship, right?

이건 그냥 선박 한 척이죠.

And, for those who know container ships,

컨테이너 선박을 좀 아신다면 사실 이 배는 작은 축에 속합니다.

this is actually a rather small one.

But that's really not the point here.

하지만 그게 중요한 게 아니에요.

I think the point is that this thing is real, right?

중요한 건 이 일이 실현되었다는 거잖아요?

It's happening.

지금 일어나고 있는 겁니다.

And not least, it is the first of many.

무엇보다도, 앞으로 일어날 많은 일의 시초라는 거죠.

We hear a lot of talk about exponential change,

급진적인 변화가 필요하다는 이야기가 많이 나오고 있는데,

and how we need that.

And I'll give you some exponential data points.

수치 자료를 몇 개 보여드리겠습니다.

So three years ago, there were none of these ships on order,

3년 전에는 이런 선박의 주문이 단 한 척도 없었습니다.

not a single one.

Two years ago, there was one.

2년 전에는 한 척 있었고요.

That one -- oh, sorry, this one. (Laughs)

바로 저기, 아니, 여기입니다.

One year ago, there was 23;

작년에는 23척이 됐습니다.

19 of those were ours.

그중 19척이 우리가 주문한 거고요.

Today, we have 120 of these ships on order.

현재는 120척을 주문한 상태입니다.

There are now five major container carriers

이제 주요 컨테이너 선사 다섯 곳이 이 선박들을 주문하기 시작했고

who have started ordering these ships,

and a couple of feeder providers as well.

중소형 컨테이너 선박 업체도 두 곳 정도 됩니다.

So that's exponential change,

but I think that's exactly what we need to shift this industry.

이 업계를 바꾸기 위해 필요한 게 바로 이거라고 생각합니다.

LL: Yeah.

LL: 네, 동의합니다.

LL: And there’s kind of a chicken-and-egg problem.

LL: 그리고 닭이 먼저냐, 달걀이 먼저냐 같은 문제가 있죠.

You need the fuel, the ship, the ship design.

연료와 선박이 있어야 하고, 선박 디자인도 해야 하는데

Are you breaking away from this?

이런 닭과 달걀 문제들은 무엇부터 먼저 할지 해결된 건가요?

Where do you start -- chicken and egg?

MBC: 닭이 먼저인 것 같아요,

MBC: Yeah, I think the chicken has met the egg,

or whether it's the egg that met the chicken? (Laughs)

아니면 달걀이 먼저든가요? (웃음)

I mean, this is a supply challenge, right?

무엇부터 시작할지가 아니라 이제는 공급의 문제라는 거죠.

We need to scale production of green methanol, because it’s important.

그린 메탄올의 생산량을 늘리는 게 중요한데

It needs to be green methanol,

화석 연료로 만든 기존 메탄올이 아니라 그린 메탄올이어야 합니다.

not the conventional methanol made from fossil fuels.

And that really is a challenge.

그건 정말 쉽지 않은 일이에요.

Just to put that, a bit, into perspective --

좀 더 큰 측면에서 보자면

we have 740 ships at Maersk.

머스크에 선박이 740척 있는데

If all of those were to sail on so-called e-methanol,

만일 이 선박들 모두가 e-메탄올이라고 하는

so methanol made from renewable electricity,

재생 가능한 전기로 만든 메탄올로 운항한다면

we would need somewhere between five and six percent

오늘날 전 세계에서 생산되는

of all wind and solar produced today in the entire world.

LL: Just for your business? MBC: Yes.

LL: 머스크사 하나에요? MBC: 네.

MBC: So I think that the magnitude of this is almost mind-blowing.

MBC: 가히 충격적인 규모라고 할 수 있겠죠.

But I think that's just all the more reason to get started.

그러니 더더욱 망설이지 말고 시작해야 할 겁니다.

LL: So that scale, that magnitude, very daunting --

LL: 그런 크기, 규모라면 몹시 벅찰 텐데요,

is that holding people back, different players in the industry?

그게 이 업계의 다른 이들을 주저하게 만드는 걸까요?

It's just too much?

너무 벅차서?

MBC: I think there's, of course, the enormity of the challenge,

MBC: 물론 거대한 도전인데

I think that goes for any part of decarbonization, right?

그건 탈탄소화 과정 중 어느 부분에나 있을 거로 생각해요.

But I think, for shipping, particularly,

그런데 특히 운송 부분에서

there’s a lot of uncertainty around

어떤 기술이 최적일지에 대해 불확실성이 너무나 많죠.

what’s the winning technology, right?

Because there's this green methanol, that's one solution.

왜냐하면 그린 메탄올은 많은 해법 중 하나니까요.

You have green ammonia, you have green methane,

그린 암모니아도 있고 그린 메탄도 있고,

you have liquified hydrogen,

액화 수소, 전기화도 있고, 심지어 핵에너지도 있죠.

electrification, even nuclear.

So there's this fear, I think,

그러니 이런 두려움이 있을 거예요.

of making the wrong bet or getting it wrong, somehow.

실수를 하는 건 아닐까, 어떻게 잘못되진 않을까.

Of course, in an ideal world,

물론 이상적인 세상에서는

we would spend a decade figuring out all the pros and cons

장단점은 무엇인지, 최선을 찾는 데 10년도 쓰겠죠.

and what is best.

But we need to address this problem now, right?

하지만 우리는 이 문제를 지금 당장 해결해야 하잖아요?

And honestly, there is no magic bullet here.

솔직히, 여기에 완벽한 수는 없어요.

All these solutions can work, I think they will work.

다 가능한 해법이고, 효과가 있을 거예요.

They all have their pros and cons.

각각 장단점이 있지만 일단은 시작해야 하는 거예요.

But we just need to get on with it.

LL: And you've chosen methanol as your fuel of choice.

LL: 그중에서 메탄올을 연료로 선택하셨는데, 왜죠?

Why is that?

MBC: 메탄올로 한 이유는 간단해요, 효과가 있으니까요.

MBC: It's very simple -- it works, and it works now.

그리고 지금 가능하니까요.

(Laughter)

LL: It works, it works now,

LL: 효과가 있고, 지금 가능하군요.

and these green fuels are still more expensive,

이런 친환경 연료들은 여전히 더 비쌉니다.

because we've got to build up the volume.

생산량이 부족하기 때문이죠.

Talk to us a little bit about the price issues.

가격 문제에 관해서 이야기해 주시죠.

MBC: It almost sounds too easy, right?

MBC: 너무 쉽게 들리지 않나요?

And it really isn't, because one of the big challenges

사실은 그렇지 않은 게, 여러 가지 큰 문제 중 하나는

is, of course, that these fuels are more expensive.

물론 이런 연료가 더 비싸다는 겁니다.

So if we take fuel at the current oil price,

현재 유가 기준으로 연료값을 비교하자면

green methanol can easily be twice, even three times the price.

그린 메탄올은 두 배는 쉽게 들고, 세 배까지도 들 수 있어요.

So that's of course quite a bit.

그러니 비용이 상당하죠.

And of course, somebody needs to pay the bill.

당연히 누군가 내야 하는데 누가 그 비용을 내야 할까요?

Who needs to pick up that bill?

At the end of the day, I guess it's all of us, as consumers,

결국엔 소비자인 우리 모두가 될 겁니다.

because it’s our consumption that creates the emissions.

바로 우리의 소비에서 탄소 배출이 생기는 거니까요.

And the interesting thing

흥미로운 점은, 이 비용을

is, when you check it through the value chain,

가치 사슬을 통해서 살펴 보면 상당히 희석된다는 거예요.

it really dilutes.

So if you double up the fuel price, that sounds crazy, right?

연료비가 두 배로 뛴다면 기가 막히겠죠?

Well, that means the freight rate goes up 10 to 15 percent.

그러면 운송 비용은 10~15퍼센트가 뛰는 겁니다.

And if you take a pair of shoes or an item like that,

신발 한 켤레나 뭐 그런 것들로 하면 한 5센트쯤 되겠고요.

that's, like, five cents.

And there's actually a quite interesting study

보스턴 컨설팅 그룹에서 한 꽤 눈여겨볼 만한 연구가 있는데요,

by the Boston Consulting Group

that shows that most consumer products can be made with a net-zero footprint,

소비재 대부분은 탄소 발자국 없이 생산이 가능하다는 겁니다.

so no emissions in production,

탄소를 배출하지 않고 생산하는 데

들어가는 비용이 1~4퍼센트 사이라는 거죠.

at a cost of somewhere between one and four percent.

So that's really what we are talking about --

전부 그렇게 하면 어떻게 될까가 바로 우리가 이야기하는 거고요.

LL: So that doesn't sound too bad.

LL: 그다지 나쁘진 않은 것 같네요.

MBC: No, I think many of us could afford that, right?

MBC: 나쁘지 않죠, 그 정도는 많은 사람들이 낼 수 있을 거예요.

I mean, it's one year's inflation, it's really what it is.

1년 인상분이 정말 그 정도라는 겁니다.

But the problem is that,

그런데 여기서 문제는,

if all the cost gets stuck at one place in the value chain,

가치 사슬의 한 곳에 모든 비용이 쌓인다면

상황이 진전되지 않겠죠?

then things don't move, right?

If you're a fuel producer,

만일 내가 연료 생산자고 내가 생산하는 제품이

and you're producing a product

that is two or three times the price of your fossil competitor,

화석 연료를 생산하는 경쟁자보다 두세 배 비싸다면,

few would dare do that,

감히 그럴 사람도 거의 없을 것이고 아무도 투자를 받지 못할 겁니다.

and nobody would get any financing for it, right?

So these fuel producers,

그러니 이런 연료 생산자들은

they look to the shipowners to make long-term offtake agreements,

선주들과 장기 공급 계약을 체결하고 싶어 하며

and we do that.

우리가 그렇게 하고 있습니다

I mean, last year at Maersk, we spent eight billion dollars on fuel,

작년에 머스크에서 지출한 연료비가 80억 달러인데

so doubling or tripling that,

거기서 두 배, 세 배가 된다면 상당히 무서운 결말이죠.

that’s a pretty scary outcome.

So we need to figure out how we can then turn to our customers,

그래서 우리는 소비자들이 친환경 프리미엄을 지불하게끔 만들

and have them pay a green premium,

and they do.

그리고 그렇게 되고 있고요.

So I think that's really what we need to do,

we need to get these partnerships across the value chain

so that we stand together and we just de-risk the thing.

함께 위험을 제거해 나가야 합니다.

Because when you de-risk, speed goes up.

지금까지 우리는 많은 개발자와 상의했고

And what we have done so far is we have talked to a lot of developers,

we have signed up for the ship that we just saw,

좀 전에 보신 선박에 쓸 연료 10년 치를 계약했습니다.

10 years worth of fuel for that one.

And for the other ones,

다른 선박에 대해서는 2030년까지 예상 소요량의

we have around 30 percent on letters of intent

for our expected consumption by 2030.

약 30%에 해당하는 의향서를 보냈습니다.

So that's how we are trying to lean out and lend our balance sheet.

저희는 이렇게 경비를 줄이고 재무 상태를 유지하고 있습니다.

LL: So you're giving confidence to the value chain.

LL: 가치 사슬에 확신이 있으신 거네요.

MBC: We're basically taking out commercial risk on these projects.

MBC: 우리 사업에서 상업적 위험을 줄여나가고 있는 거죠.

물론 그 후에는 고객과 협력해서

And then we, of course, need to turn to our customers

to figure out how they can either pass that onto us as consumers

고객이 그 상업적 위험을 그들의 소비자에게 전달할 방법이나

or somehow create value from that.

거기서 가치를 창출해 낼 방법을 알아내야 합니다.

That's really the challenge we have.

그게 진짜 문제이죠.
