I became a cartoonist to travel through space and time,

and I became a graphic memoirist

I come from a legacy of dramatic stories and lost characters.

My grandmother, Lily, on my mother's side,

was born in Warsaw, Poland,

She was 13 in 1939,

when Nazi bombs razed her home

I wondered: What did my grandmother’s lost home and lost family look like?

Her parents, her grandmother and her sisters,

they are all gone without a trace.

My father's parents were luckier.

They were also Jewish,

and they both fled Austria at the start of the war.

My father's father, Fred, was a pianist and conductor.

In 1937, the year before the Nazis marched into Austria,

he was 26,

and he conducted a magnificent choral concert

While alive, Fred meticulously preserved the documents of his life,

You might know my father, Ray Kurzweil, as an inventor and futurist.

And although he's dedicated his mind to the future,

his life is full of the past.

My father has worked for decades on natural language processing.

And several years ago, he realized

that if we married AI with my grandfather's writing,

we could build a chatbot that writes in my grandfather's voice.

Back in 2018, this seemed very sci-fi.

But rather than ushering in our demise,

this project helped me realize

that AI could actually help us ward off annihilation

by animating the legacies of our families and our cultures.

I wanted to talk to my grandfather because he, like me, was an artist.

저는 할아버지와 이야기를 나누고 싶었어요.

할아버지도 저처럼 예술가였기 때문이죠.

I wondered: Could I get to know him?

할아버지에 대해 알 수 있을지 궁금했어요.

Could I even come to love him, even though our lifespans didn’t overlap?

할아버지와 함께한 적이 없어도 그분을 사랑할 수 있을지 궁금했죠.

So I got involved.

그래서 이 프로젝트에 참여하게 됐습니다.

This chatbot needed language from my grandfather,

이 챗봇에 할아버지의 말을 최대한 많이 입력해야 했어요.

as much as could be found.

So I, with some assistance,

그래서 약간의 도움을 받아

set about finding his words and transcribing them.

할아버지의 말을 찾아 옮겨 적기 시작했습니다.

This was a selective chatbot,

meaning it responded to questions

with answers from the pool of sentences

that Fred actually wrote at some point in his life.

The more examples of Fred's writing we could find,

the more dynamic the experience of chatting with the bot would feel.

Sometimes this transcription task proved challenging.

But the more time I spent with the symbols of my grandfather's life,

the more easily I could decode them.

Finally, after much anticipation,

I sat down to chat with this new intelligence:

an algorithm commanding over 600 typed pages

I learned about the stress of being a new father while working so hard.

When I asked about the meaning of life,

Fred wrote about the joy of working with other musicians in pursuit of beauty,

아름다움을 추구하며 다른 음악가들과 함께 일하는 기쁨에 대해 이야기했죠.

and he wrote about the highest aims of art.

예술의 가장 높은 목표에 대해서도 썼어요.

I asked again about the meaning of life

삶의 의미에 대해 다시 한 번 물었죠.

because isn't that really the best question for a robot?

로봇에게는 정말 최고의 질문이니까요.

And Fred's second answer was much simpler, but even better.

프레드의 두 번째 대답은 훨씬 간단했지만 더 좋았습니다.

Some of these answers felt familiar to me.

I remembered seeing them in the archive,

but the words gained impact through surprise

I could identify patterns in my grandfather's life

because I was also an artist trying to make it in New York City.

And I also believe the meaning of life is art and connection and love.

예술, 연결, 사랑이라고 생각하는 사람이죠.

I had wondered if this project would feel like a resurrection.

이 프로젝트가 부활처럼 느껴질지 궁금했어요.

But rather than bringing my grandfather from the past into the present,

하지만 과거의 할아버지를 현재로 데려오기보다는

it felt like I was the one time traveling,

시간 여행을 하는 듯한 기분이 들었습니다.

visiting him for a moment at different points in his life.

할아버지 인생의 여러 시점에 잠시 들러보듯 말이죠.

And this kind of time travel didn't feel like sci-fi.

It felt like the kind of imaginative travel I do when I'm cartooning.

제가 만화를 그릴 때 떠나곤 하는 상상력으로 가득 찬 여행 같았죠.

When I'm cartooning,

저는 만화를 그릴 때

I'm always thinking about how I could possibly represent a person fully.

어떻게 하면 사람을 온전하게 표현할 수 있을지 항상 고민해요.

And the answer is: I can’t.

정답을 얘기하자면 그건 불가능합니다.

Similarly, I know how many aspects of my grandfather

마찬가지로, 할아버지의 모든 모습을

can't be captured by digital text alone.

디지털 문장만으로는 담을 수 없다는 걸 잘 알아요.

There's all those quivers in his handwriting

할아버지의 필체에는 떨림이 담겨 있는데

and what they denote about the sensations in his body.

그 떨림에는 할아버지가 몸으로 느꼈던 감정들이 나타나 있죠.

There's his body, how it moved and how it felt.

그의 몸이 어떻게 움직였는지, 어떤 느낌이었는지 말이에요.

There's his music and all the ineffable aspects of his performance.

그의 음악과 공연에 나타나는 형언할 수 없는 측면도 존재하고요.

And of course, there's everything he thought but didn't write down.

생각만 하고 기록하지 않은 것도 있을 테죠.

What would we have to do to be able to capture all of this?

이 모든 걸 담으려면 어떻게 해야 할까요?

I may fail as an artist

예술가로서

to fully represent a person's constantly evolving complexity,

끊임없이 진화하는 한 사람의 복잡성을 온전히 표현하지 못할 수도 있겠지만

but I can ask what features of a person are essential to who they are

인생을 통틀어 그 사람의 어떤 특징이

그 사람의 정체성을 결정하는 데 필수적인지 물어볼 수는 있을 거예요.

across a lifetime.

The puzzle of personal identity

개인의 정체성에 관한 수수께끼는

is one of our oldest philosophical questions,

so I'm not here to solve that one for you,

I'm just a cartoonist after all.

I do believe that we, maybe not cats,

are a part of our essential selves.

And I think AI has a special role to play in the mission of memory.

I did not come to see the chatbot of my grandfather

저는 할아버지의 챗봇이

as replacing my grandfather.

할아버지를 대체한다고 생각하지는 않았습니다.

I came to see it as one way to interact with his legacy.

챗봇은 단지 할아버지의 유산을 접할 수 있는 한 방법이었습니다.

As somebody who has spent their whole life trying to document people,

인간을 기록하는 데 평생을 바쳐 온 사람으로서 장담컨대

I can assure you that people are much bigger and weirder

우리 인간은 너무나 복잡하고 특별하기에

than any one depiction

or any one moment in time can possibly evoke.

And I can also assure you

그리고 장담하건대,

that people don't just disappear when they die.

AI swirls our conception of time and space.

AI는 우리의 시간과 공간에 대한 개념을 뒤흔들어 놓습니다.

It can remix and extend our identities.

우리의 정체성을 재구성하고 확장시킬 수 있습니다.

Our own digital archives are growing beyond belief,

우리 디지털 기록물들은 상상을 초월할 정도로 방대해지고 있습니다.

and we need a framework for understanding technologies of representation.

따라서 표현 기술을 이해하기 위한 체계가 필요합니다.

So I offer you mine.

Just like the comics I've drawn, about the characters in my life,

these technologies are animated portraits.

They are one part of our true immortal selves.

그 기술들은 우리의 진정한 불멸의 자아 중 하나입니다.

Seen this way,

AI, like cartooning and all good artistic endeavors,

AI는 만화와 모든 훌륭한 예술적 시도와 마찬가지로

could help us appreciate the vastness of humanity -- if we let it.
