But if your upbringing was anything like mine,

it is a question that you heard over and over again.

And it wasn't until I became an adult that I began to understand

the significance of the asking of the questions by our community leaders

and my grandparents.

But it was only recently in the last two years

that I get some true understanding

of just how much significance and weight there was

in the answer back then and even today.

You see, growing up Black and female in the South more than 40 years ago,

there are some limitations to the answer to that question.

Whether real or perceived, there were limitations all the same.

And so what I want you to understand at this moment,

as a young girl growing up,

with all that was happening right after the civil rights movement,

all of the advancements of the struggle,

things that were meant to push and advance the African-American community;

제 시대의 사람들은 그러한 모든 기회를

things like the Voting Rights Act,

충분히 활용할 수 있어야 했던 것입니다.

The Fair Housing Act and affirmative action,

and my generation was supposed to be taking full advantage

of all of those opportunities.

So, when they ask the question,

"What do you want to be when you grow up?,"

it meant something to them.

I remember hearing this question one summer at vacation Bible school.

And if anybody is here from the South,

you understand that vacation Bible school

is not to be confused with BTU training school

방학, 성경, 학교를 합칠 생각을 했는지 의문이에요.

or Sunday-go-to-meeting school.

it is vacation Bible school.

전 어린 시절 매년 여름 첫 주마다

I'm still trying to figure out who thought it was a good idea

to put a vacation, Bible and school all together ...

방학 성경 학교에 참여했습니다.

(Laughter)

한 해 여름엔 이 선생님이 계셨는데

But the first week of every summer, of every summer during my childhood,

저나 제 중학교 친구들과 나이 차이가 얼마 나지 않는 분이었죠.

it was spent in vacation Bible school.

선생님은 우리가 성서를 잘 이해했는지

And this one particular summer there was a teacher.

우리가 커서 무엇이 될 지와 같은 현실적인 질문에

She wasn't too much older than me and my middle school friends.

She wanted to make sure that we understood scripture

이를 연관시킬 수 있는지를 확인하려 하셨어요.

그 날 점심시간에 여자애들은 둘러앉아 깔깔대며

and was able to connect it to this real world question

뭐라고 대답할지 생각했는데

of what you will be when you grow up.

And so as my gaggle of girls sat around lunch that day,

trying to figure out what we were going to say,

thinking back now, it was a really impressive group of girls

교사, 의사가 되겠다고 했거든요.

전 그런걸 원하진 않았어요.

because they wanted to be things like civil rights attorneys,

뭔가 다른 것을 하고 싶었죠.

제가 되고 싶었던 것은...

educators and doctors.

바로...

I didn't want any of that.

사상가였습니다.

I was going to do something different.

(웃음)

네, 맞아요.

You see, I was going to be ...

wait for it ...

그래서 제 차례가 되어

A thinker.

(Laughter)

방학 성경 학교 전체 앞에서 말할 때가 되었을 때

Yes.

(Applause)

저는 제 소개를 하고

So when it came time for me to take the stage

“전 커서 사상가가 될거예요.” 라고 했습니다.

and share with the entire vacation Bible school,

더러는 웃고 키득댔지만

I introduced myself and I said,

정말로 제 말을 바꾸게 만든 것은 못마땅한 선생님의 표정이었습니다.

"When I grow up, I'm going to be a thinker."

There was some laughter, some giggles,

“전 커서 변호사가 될 거예요.” 라고 말하고는

but it was really the disapproving look on the teacher's face that made me recant.

무대에서 내려갔습니다.

시간이 지나 지금으로부터 2년 전,

And so I said really quickly,

저는 위대한 사상가들을 양성하는 것으로 유명한

"When I grow up, I'm going to be a lawyer,"

and then I exit stage left.

한 기관에서 지낼 기회를 얻었습니다.

But fast-forward to two years ago

and I get an opportunity to spend time at an institution

케네디 학교에는 하나의 의례로

known for creating and cultivating great thinkers.

학생들이 그 유명한 포럼 무대에 서서

Little did I know at the time

that there's a ritual at the Kennedy School

where students get an opportunity to stand on the famous forum stage

and they're given 15 seconds to say

what they were going to do at the Kennedy School.

And so, you know what I'm thinking, right?

It's a full-circle moment. I'm going to get it right.

So I take the mic, I introduce myself and I say to my peers,

to deans and to faculty members

별로 웃지 않더라고요.

that I'm here to tell you

that marijuana matters.

Not a lot of giggles.

Actually, it was actually a lot of applause.

But in my head, I'm thinking,

"Khadijah, did you just stand on the premiere policy stage

and tell these folks you’re going to talk about weed?”

That's exactly what I did,

and for the next 12 months,

I immersed myself in all things marijuana,

day in and day out, reading, talking, sniffing, thinking about marijuana.

그런데 대마초에 관해 제가 알게된 것은 이렇습니다.

So much so, my lovely wife Robyn banned the topic from the dinner table.

제가 드린 말씀 중에 다른 건 몰라도 이건 꼭 기억해 주세요.

(Laughter)

But here's what I came to understand about marijuana.

우리가 시민권 운동을 통해

이루고자 하는 것들, 즉,

And if you don't remember anything else from my talk, please remember this.

공정 주택,

보다 폭넓은 교육 기회,

That for all of the gains that we were trying to make

구직 기회,

아프리카계 미국인 공동체의 부 축적,

with the civil rights movement --

fair housing,

expanded opportunities in education,

employment opportunities,

building the wealth of the African-American community,

the failed policies of the war on drugs single-handedly undid all of that.

And here's how we know that.

I want to give you guys five numbers.

And no, it's not the Mega Millions jackpot numbers.

See, for more than five decades,

this country has waged a war on drugs,

which has been tantamount to waging a war on Black and brown communities.

Millions of people have been arrested,

convicted and incarcerated for marijuana-related possessions.

In the last decade alone, 7 million.

And those 7 million people are facing

what's known as 46,000 collateral consequences.

Now, some of you may be saying, "If you do the crime, you do the time."

And I only have five minutes left, so I can't argue that point today.

But I will say to you, at this moment,

when 33 states and the District of Columbia

have some form of regulated

growing marijuana, selling marijuana,

consuming marijuana and distributing marijuana on a mass scale,

is it still a crime?

젊은 여성인 키이브는 그녀의 미래에 대해 아주 열정적이었습니다.

I ask because I've met people all across this country

고등학교를 마치고

who are living with those collateral consequences.

야망에 찬 그녀는 대학교에 가고 싶어했죠.

People like Keyvette, a young woman, very energetic about her future.

그러나 이를 깨닫기도 전에

When she left high school,

그녀는 교통 위반으로 걸렸는데

she was ambitious and she wanted to go off to college.

아마 헤드라이트가 고장났던 것 같아요.

But before she could realize that

she was stopped for a routine traffic violation,

그 와중에 경찰관이 대마초 냄새를 맡은 거죠.

I think it was a broken headlight.

버지니아 주에서는

And in the course of that stop the police officers smelled marijuana.

대마초 냄새는 압수수색의 원인이 될 수 있어요.

차를 수색해 보니 사용하지 않은 대마초가 나왔고

And if you're in the state of Virginia,

the smell of marijuana is probable cause for search and seizure.

그녀는 체포되고 이 일이 기록되어서

아직까지도 대마초 관련 전과 기록이 남아있습니다.

The car was searched, there was marijuana that wasn't used.

이 때문에 그녀는

종종 아파트 거주 자격과

She was arrested, booked,

and to this day, she still has a criminal record related to marijuana.

구직 기회를 얻기가 힘듭니다.

Because of that record,

게다가 학교를 다니기 위한 재정지원 자격까지 잃었죠.

she often finds it hard to qualify for an apartment,

employment opportunities.

여러분이 모르실 수도 있는 부분은

She also lost the opportunity to use financial aid to go to school.

만약 대마초 관련 전과가 있을 경우

Some of you might not even know

이발사 면허증이나 미용사 면허증과 같은

there are about 26 licensures for entry-level employment opportunities,

면허증들을 취득할 수 없다는 것입니다.

that if you have a marijuana-related conviction,

그러나 키이브의 상황에 대해 제가 화가 나는 것은

you may not be able to get that license,

그녀에게는 아이가 둘 있다는 점입니다.

like a barber's license or a cosmetology license.

But the thing that I find so offensive about ??? situation

게다가 대마초 관련 혐의가 있는 사람의 자녀들은

가난 속에서 살게 될 확률이 높다는 것에 대한 증거도 있어요.

is that she has two kids.

And there's evidence to suggest children born to individuals

여러분에게 묻고 싶습니다. 이게 정당한가요?

who have a marijuana-related offense,

미공군에서 자랑스럽고 영예롭게 26년간 복역해온

they're more likely to live in poverty.

And I ask you guys, is that fair?

Is that equitable?

Or take the veteran who proudly and honorably served for 26 years

in the United States Air Forces.

In that service, he actually lost the use of his legs,

he's paralyzed and he uses marijuana for pain management.

He also uses it to deal with his anxiety and depression

that you can imagine would come with losing independence and mobility.

And he uses marijuana knowing full well

that he is at risk of losing the very health benefits

that he earned as a disabled veteran.

왜 대마초에 대해 그렇게 열정적이죠?”라고 물어요.

You know, people ask me all the time,

"Khadijah, why marijuana?

연속이라고 느껴진다는 거예요.

Why are you so passionate about marijuana?”

The reality of it is I feel like this is just a continuation

of the work I've done my entire life.

I've worked alongside marginalized communities,

And those two kids, King and Titan,

mean so much to me.

And just like my grandparents asked me,

제 손주들로부터 듣고 싶습니다.

"What do you want to be when you grow up?,"
