How to use Active and Passive Voice in English

능동태와 수동태 문장, 어떻게 사용해야 할까요?

오늘 알아볼게요.

Let's talk about it.

When I was in school my English teachers always said, don't use passive sentences.

제가 학생이었을 때, 선생님은 항상 이러셨어요.

"수동태를 사용해서 말하지 마세요. 그건 무언가를 표현하는 좋은 방법이 아니에요."

That's not the best way to express something.

But, do you know what?

근데, 실제로는 그렇지 않아요.

That's not a reality.

There are specific times and places when you should use passive sentences.

수동태 문장을 사용하는 것이 나은 경우가 있답니다.

그래서 오늘은 능동태 문장이 무엇이고,

Today, I'm going to describe what active sentences are, when to use them, and what passive sentences

언제 사용해야 하는지

수동태 문장은 무엇이고

are, and when to use them, because you want to make sure you're using them in the right

언제 사용해야 되는지 설명할거에요.

적절한 문맥과 상황해서 능동태와 수동태 문장을 알맞게 사용해야 하니까요.

Before we get started, I want to give you a little test.

I have two sentences, and I want you to guess which one is active, and which one is passive.

두 개의 문장을 말해볼건데, 어떤게 능동태 문장이고 어떤게 수동태 문장인지 생각해보세요.

Of course, we haven't talked about this yet, so you're just using your gut, your instinct

물론 아직 배우지는 않았지만

여러분의 감을 최대한 활용해서

to tell you which one is active and which one is passive.

어떤게 능동태고 어떤게 수동태인지 추측해보세요.

The first sentence is, the dishes weren't done yesterday.

첫번째 문장은, "The dishes weren't done yesterday."

The second sentence is, I didn't do the dishes yesterday.

두번째 문장은, "I didn't do the dishes yesterday." 입니다.

Which one is active and which one is passive?

어떤게 능동태 문장이고, 어떤게 수동태 문장일까요?

Let's talk about the answer to that question at the end of this lesson.

First, let's talk about active sentences.

먼저, 능동태 문장에 대해 알아봅시다.

능동태 문장이 도대체 무엇일까요?

What I the world are they?

They key to an active sentence is that the subject is the one who's doing the action

능동태 문장의 핵심은

주어가, 동사의 동작을 행하는 주체라는 거에요.

of the verb.

그래서 "능동태"라고 부르는 거죠.

That's why they're called active sentences.

There's an action that's happening and the subject is doing it.

어떤 동작이 일어나는데, 주어가 그걸 능동적으로 직접 하는거니까요.

A quick example is that stereotypical time when maybe you were younger and you came home

간단한 예를 들면

진부한 이야기지만 어릴 때, 학교에서 집에 돌아오면

from school and your mom asked you, what'd you do today?

엄마가 "오늘은 뭐했니? 라고 묻죠.

Maybe you said, not much.

그럴 때, "뭐 특별한거 없었어요"라고 할 수도 있고

Maybe you said, nothing.

"별거 없었어요"라고 할 수도 있겠지만

But let's imagine that you give some kind of answer.

여기에 구체적인 대답을 한다고 상상해 볼게요.

음.. 저는 수학을 공부했고, 시험을 하나 봤어요.

You might say, well, we studied math.

I took a test.

The teacher read us a book.

선생님이 우리에게 책을 읽어주셨고, 교장선생님이 나한테 소리 지르셨어요. 내가 문제를 일으켰거든요.

The principal yelled at me because I got in trouble.

These are all active sentences.

이러한 것들이 능동태 문장입니다.

주어가 동작을 직접 하고 있고,

The subject is doing the action.

The subject is directly linked to the action.

주어가 직접적으로 동작과 관련이 되어 있죠.

The best time to use active sentences is when you're telling a story.

능동태 문장을 사용하기 적절한 상황은

어떤 이야기를 전달할 때에요.

It's engaging, or linking the subject to the verb, so it's feeling more active.

주어가 이야기와 직접적으로 관련이 있어서 동작을 직접 행하는 주체이고

그래서 좀 더 능동적인 느낌이 들고, 동작 동사들을 중심으로 이야기를 따라가고

You're following the story.

There's more action verbs.

This is a great way to tell a story, to write directly.

그래서 능동형 문장을 쓰는 건 이야기를 전달하기 좋은 방법이에요.

직접적으로 이야기를 전달하는 거죠.

If you want to be indirect, this is not the voice for you.

만약 간접적으로 이야기를 하고 싶다면,

능동태 보다는 수동태 문장을 사용해야 해요.

You should you use passive voice, which we'll talk about in a moment.

수동태는 잠시 뒤에 설명할건데요.

그래서 능동태 문장은 직접적으로 재미있는 이야기를 전달하기 좋은 방식이죠.

But this is a great way to be direct and to tell an interesting story.

What's passive voice?

그러면, 수동태는 뭘까요?

Well, the key to passive voice is that the subject is not doing the action of the verb.

수동태의 핵심은

주어가 동사의 동작을 행하는 주체가 아니라는 점이에요.

The person who's doing the action is not the subject.

동작을 행하는 사람이, 주어가 아닌거죠.

Let's imagine that every day when you get home from work, dinner is made.

매일 일이 끝나고 집에 돌아왔을 때

저녁식사가 만들어져 있죠. 저녁식사가 완성되어 있어요.

Dinner is finished.

Do you know who made dinner?

누가 저녁식사를 만들었는지 알 수 있나요?

No.

It's a mystery.

모르죠! 미스터리하네요 ㅋㅋ

But in this sentence the subject is dinner.

아무튼 이 문장에서 주어는 "저녁식사"이죠.

Dinner is made.

"저녁식사"가 만들어졌다.

상상만 해도 행복하네요. 일이 끝나고 집에 왔는데 저녁식사가 이미 테이블에 차려져 있다.

That's great.

I would love to come home and dinner would be already made, and on the table.

That would amazing.

정말 행복하겠는데요?

This isn't really the reality in my life, but maybe it is for you.

제 현실은 그렇지 않네요.

누군가에겐 현실일 수 있겠죠? 일이 끝나고 집에 왔는데

You get home from work, and dinner is made.

저녁식사가 만들어져 있다. 저녁식사가 테이블 위에 차려져 있다.

Dinner is on the table.

Dinner is waiting to be eaten by you.

저녁식사가 당신에게 먹혀지기를 기다리고 있다. ㅋㅋ

Who is doing the action here?

여기서 동작을 행하는 주체는 누구인가요?

We don't know.

아무도 모르죠. 문장에 주어지지 않았으니까요.

It's not in the sentence, so you might say, dinner is made by my wife.

이렇게 이야기 할 수 있겠죠. "저녁식사가 만들어 졌다. 내 부인에 의해.

내 남편에 의해.

Dinner is made by my husband.

Dinner is made by my mom.

혹은 엄마에 의해."

"저녁식사가 만들어 졌다. "

Dinner is made.

Dinner is not making itself.

저녁식사가 스스로 자기를 만든게 아니죠?

Someone is doing it, but that person is not the subject of the sentence, and so, voila,

누군가가 만들어 놓은 거죠?

근데 그 누군가가 문장의 주어가 아니죠.

그래서, 여기 수동태 문장이 있는겁니다.

we have a passive sentence.

There are three times that you are going to use the passive voice.

수동태 문장을 사용하게 되는 세 가지 경우가 있어요.

The first one is when you don't know who did the action.

첫 번쨰로는 누가 동작을 행했는지 모를 때에요.

Let's imagine that you're car is stolen.

여러분의 차가 도난당했다고 상상해봅시다.

This is a perfect passive voice sentence.

수동태를 사용해야 하는 완벽한 상황인데요.

We don't know who did it.

아무도 누가 훔쳐갔는지 모르죠.

You could say, the thief stole my car.

물론 도둑이 내 차를 훔쳐갔다 라고 할 수도 있겠죠.

This is active voice.

이건 능동형 문장이죠.

But you can really easily use a passive voice sentence here, and say, my car was stolen.

하지만 이 경우에서는 수동태 문장을 사용하는게 쉽고,

"내 차가 도난당했다" 라고 말 할 수 있죠.

Car is the subject, but car is not doing the action.

"자"가 주어이지만, 차가 동사의 동작을 직접 하지 않았죠.

The car didn't steal itself, so here we're using the passive voice, because we don't

차가 "도난 당한" 동작을 스스로 직접 한게 아니죠.

그래서 여기서 수동태 문장을 사용하게 되죠. 누가 이 동작을 행했는지 모르니까요.

know who did the action.

수동태 문장을 사용하는 두 번째 경우는, 누가 동작을 행했던 상관 없는 경우에요.

The second time that you're going to use the passive voice is when you just don't care

who did the action.

Maybe it's not important or relevant to your sentence.

누가 동작을 행했는지 중요하지 않거나, 말하고자 하는 문장과 관련이 없는 경우인데요.

그래서 여러분이 "내 차는 2010년도에 만들어 진거야" 라고 말할 수 있을텐데요.

You might say, my car was made in 2010.

제가 이렇게 말하지 않았죠."Mazda가 내 차를 2010년에 만들었다."

I didn't say, Mazda made my car in 2010.

No.

I just said, my car was made.

그냥 "내 차가 만들어졌다"라고 했죠.

My car didn't make itself, but I'm not stating who did the action, because it's just not

내 차가 스스로 자기를 만든게 아니죠.

하지만 누가 차를 만들었는지 언급하지 않았죠.

왜냐면 문맥상 관련이 없거나, 누가 만들었는지 별로 중요하지 않거나

relevant, or it's not important, or maybe I don't care to share that information with

굳이 누가 만들었는지에 관해 공유할 필요가 없는 걸 수도 있겠죠.

you.

누가 만들었는지는 알아요. 누가 만든지 몰라서 그러는게 아니라, 알지만

I know who did it.

It's not the first reason.

I do know who made my car, but I just don't care to share it with you.

굳이 누가 만들었는지에 대해 신경쓰지 않는거죠.

My car was made in 2010.

그냥 "내 차는 2010년도에 만들어졌다." 이게 핵심 메시지니까요.

The third time that you're going to use the passive voice is one of the most useful, and

수동태를 사용하게 되는 세 번째 경우는, 가장 유용한 경우인데요.

this is when you don't want to blame someone for doing an action.

동작에 대해 특정 누군가를 탓하고 싶지 않은 경우에요.

Let's imagine that you have an agreement with your husband, like I do.

여러분이 남편과 합의를 했다고 생각해봅시다. 저처럼요.

In our house, Dan does the dishes and I help to do a lot of tasks for our baby.

우리집에서는 댄이 설거지를 하고, 저는 아기를 돌보는 것과 관련된 일을 합니다.

만약에 댄이 설거지를 하지 않는다면 이렇게 말할 거 같아요.

If he doesn't do the dishes, I might say, you didn't do the dishes.

"당신 설거지 안했어."

This is an active sentence.

이건 능동형 문장이고, 직접적이고, 명확하죠.

It's direct, and it's clear.

근데 이걸 좀 더 예의있게, 간접적으로 얘기하고 싶다면 이렇게 얘기할 것 같은데요.

But if I want to be a little bit more polite, a little bit more indirect, I might say, oh,

"어제 보니까 설거지가 안 되어 있더라구"

I saw that the dishes weren't done yesterday.

"설거지가 안 되어 있다."

The dishes weren't done.

I'm not saying, you didn't do the dishes.

"당신이 설거지를 하지 않았다" 대신에 말이에요.

We're not stating that the subject here, the active sentence, you didn't do the dishes.

"당신이 설거지를 안했어"라고 말하는 능동형 문장에서 처럼 주어를 언급하지 않은거죠.

Instead, it's passive.

대신에 수동태 문장을 사용했죠.

It's a little bit more indirect, and depending on the situation, this could be a good idea,

보다 간접적이죠. 상황에 따라 달라질 것 같긴 한데요.

이렇게 말하는게 좋을 수도 나쁠 수도 있겠죠.

or a bad idea.

개인적으로 저는 남편과 좀 더 직접적으로 이야기 하는 편인데요.

Personally for me with my husband, we would rather be more direct with each other, especially

특히 이러한 상황에서는요.

in these kinds of situations.

We don't want to be passive aggressive.

수동적으로 공격적이 되고 싶지 않거든요.ㅋㅋ

하지만 특정 상황에서는, 특히 직장에서

But in certain situations, especially at work, this is really a great idea.

이렇게 간접적으로 말하는게 좋은 방법이죠.

When you want to be indirect, you don't want to blame someone, so you're going to be more

간접적으로 말함으로써 누군가를 직접적으로 저격하고 싶지 않을 때 말이죠.

indirect.

그럼, 직장에서 일어나는 대화 상황을 살펴봅시다.

Let's take a look at a quick work situation where you're going to hear two people talking

두 사람이 끝내지지 않은 업무에 대해서 이야기 하는 걸 듣게 될텐데요.

about a task that wasn't done, and they're trying to figure out who should do it, but

누가 이 업무를 해야 하는지 알아내려고 하는 상황이지만

they're trying to be polite and not blame anyone.

보다 정중하게 말함으로서 누구도 탓하지 않으려고 노력하는 상황의 대화입니다.

You're going to hear the active voice used, and the passive voice used.

그래서 능동형 문장을 사용하는 상황과, 수동형 문장을 사용하는 상황을 듣게 될거에요.

I recommend looking at the screen and trying to follow along, so that you can make these

화면을 보고 대화상황을 따라가면서 이 문장들을 스스로 만들수 있게 되도록 노력 해보세요.

sentences yourself.

Hi, Daniel, do you have a moment?

A: 다니엘, 잠시 이야기좀 할 수 있을까?

B: 응, 무슨 일이야?

Sure, what's on your mind?

Well, when I came into work today, I noticed the boxes didn't get put away last night.

A: 다름이 아니라, 오늘 출근을 하니까 어젯밤에 박스가 치워져 있지 않은게 보이더라고.

Uh huh, I see.

B: 음.. 그래.

And so this morning, someone had to put them away.

A: 그니까.. 오늘 아침에 이걸 누군가 치웠어야 했지.

You're saying that you had to put the boxes away?

B: 그러나까, 네가 박스를 치웠어야 했다는 거야?

Yes, that's it, and when things don't get put away, someone needs to spend extra time

A: 맞아 그거야. 무언가 치워져 있지 않으면, 누군가 그걸 치우느라 추가로 시간을 들여야 하지.

cleaning in the morning.

Ah, yes, yes.

B: 아..그래 그래. 나도 치워져야 하는 박스 때문에 직원들이 시간 낭비를 하지 않았으면 좋겠어.

Well, I certainly don't want boxes being left out, and employees wasting time.

A: 그게 바로 내가 오늘 너에게 이 이야기를 꺼낸 이유야. 우리 어떻게 해야 할까?

That's why I wanted to bring it to your attention today.

What should we do?

Well, whose job is it to put everything away at night?

B: 음.. 밤에 이걸 치워야 하는게 누구의 일이지?

A: 문제는 이 일이 아직 누구에게도 배정되지 않았다는 거야.

The problem is that this task isn't assigned to anyone yet.

You seem like a responsible person.

B: 너가 이 일을 담당하기 적격인 것 같은데. 너가 이 박스들을 담당하는 건 어때?

Why aren't you in charge of boxes at night?

Oh, I guess I could do it.

A: 뭐... 내가 할 수도 있겠지.

B: 굿굿 이제 문제가 해결됐네.

Excellent.

Then the problem is solved.

The first sentence was, the dishes weren't done yesterday.

두 번째 문장은 "I didn't do the dishes yesterday."였죠.

The second sentence was, I didn't do the dishes yesterday.

Which one is passive and which one is active?

어떤 게 수동태 문장이고, 어떤 게 능동태 문장일까요?

The subject, the action, who is doing the action?

주어, 동작, 누가 이 동작을 행하고 있나요? 누가 설거지를 한 주체이고, 누가 아닌가요?

Who is the one that is doing the dishes, or not doing the dishes?

It's me.

접니다. 제가 설거지를 안했죠.

I didn't do the dishes.

I'm the one who's doing the action, so the second sentence is going to be our active

제가 동작을 직접적으로 하는 사람이죠.

그래서 두 번째 문장이 능동태 문장이 되는 거죠.

sentence.

그리고 두 번째는 수동태 문장이죠. 그릇들이 스스로 설거지를 하는게 아니니까요.

The first sentence is going to be passive.

The dishes aren't doing themselves.

그렇게 된다면 좋겠네요. 우리는 식기세척기가 없거든요.

That would be amazing, actually.

We don't have a dishwasher, so I'm the dishwasher, or in this situation, actually Dan's the dishwasher

그래서 제가 식기세척기에요. 사실 댄이 식기세척기나 마찬가지죠.

now.

But we are using the active voice to say, I didn't do the dishes.

아무튼 우리는 "내가 설거지를 하지 않았어" 라고 하기 위해 능동태 문장을 사용하고

Or, the passive voice, the dishes weren't done.

"설거지가 안되어있다" 라고 하기 위해 수동태 문장을 사용하게 되죠.

Just tell me that the sweeping wasn't done yesterday, or the vacuuming wasn't done yesterday.

그냥 "어제 빗자루질이 안 되어 있었다."

아니면, "어제 청소가 안 되어 있었다. "

You can make it indirect, or passive if you like.

이런식으로 간접적으로, 수동태로 적어볼 수 있겠죠.
