In this video, we’re going to talk about using ‘a’ or ‘an’.

We use ‘a’ or ‘an’ in front of nouns.

Well, what is a noun?

แล้วคำนามคืออะไร?

A noun is a person, place, thing, or animal.

คำนามคือบุคคล สถานที่ สิ่งของ หรือสัตว์

Okay, so let’s look at the board.

เอาล่ะ มาดูที่กระดานกันดีกว่า

The first noun we have is “banana”.

คำนามแรกที่เรามีคือ “กล้วย”

“banana”, starts with the consonant ‘b’.

“banana” ขึ้นต้นด้วยพยัญชนะ 'b'

So, we put “a banana”.

ดังนั้นเราจึงใส่ "กล้วย"

“a banana”.

"กล้วย".

Look at the next word. “Apple”.

ดูคำถัดไปสิ "แอปเปิล".

In this case, the first letter is ‘a’.

ในกรณีนี้ ตัวอักษรตัวแรกคือ 'a'

‘a’ is a vowel.

'a' เป็นสระ

Remember the vowels are a, e, i, o, u,

จำไว้ว่าสระคือ a, e, i, o, u

so we have to put ‘an’.

เราจึงต้องใส่ 'an'

“an apple”.

"แอปเปิ้ล".

“cat”. Hmmm.

"แมว". อืม.

The first letter, ‘c’, is a consonant.

ตัวอักษรตัวแรก 'c' เป็นพยัญชนะ

So, should we put, ‘a’ or ‘an’?

แล้วเราควรใส่ 'a' หรือ 'an' ดี?

Remember, if it’s a consonant, we have to put ‘a’.

จำไว้ว่า ถ้าเป็นพยัญชนะ เราต้องใส่ 'a'

“a cat”.

"แมว".

The next word, “boy”.

คำต่อไป “เด็ก”

Again, the word starts with a consonant: ‘b’.

อีกครั้งที่คำนั้นขึ้นต้นด้วยพยัญชนะ: 'b'

So, we have to say, “a boy”.

เราจึงต้องพูดว่า "เด็กผู้ชาย"

The next word, “egg”, has the letter ‘e’ in front.

คำถัดไป “ไข่” มีตัวอักษร 'e' อยู่ข้างหน้า

‘e’ is a vowel.

'e' เป็นสระ

So, what do we put?

แล้วเราจะใส่อะไร?

We put ‘an’.

เราใส่ 'อัน'

If we read it, it sounds like “an egg.”

ถ้าเราอ่านแล้วมันฟังดูเหมือน "ไข่"

“an egg”.

"ไข่".

Okay, and the last word is “ant”.

“ant” starts with the vowel ‘a’.

“มด” ขึ้นต้นด้วยสระ 'a'

So again, we must put……”an ant”.

อีกครั้งเราต้องใส่……”มด”

“an ant”.

"มด".

Now, let’s go through these words together.

ตอนนี้เรามาดูคำเหล่านี้ด้วยกัน

“a banana”. “a banana”.

"กล้วย". "กล้วย".

“an apple”. “an apple”.

"แอปเปิ้ล". "แอปเปิ้ล".

Keep in mind that when you have ‘an’ in front,

it has to sound like almost one word.

Ahhh, I have some nouns on the board.

Remember, a noun is a person, place, thing or animal.

โปรดจำไว้ว่า คำนามคือบุคคล สถานที่ สิ่งของ หรือสัตว์

So let’s go through them one by one.

มาดูทีละเรื่องกันดีกว่า

“a book”, “book” is a thing.

“หนังสือ” “หนังสือ” เป็นสิ่งหนึ่ง

It’s a thing that we read.

เป็นสิ่งที่เราอ่าน

“park”, is a place. It’s a place we go.

“สวนสาธารณะ” คือสถานที่ มันเป็นสถานที่ที่เราไป

“umbrella” is a thing.

“ร่ม” เป็นสิ่งหนึ่ง

Right. Umbrella is a thing that we use when it’s raining.

ขวา. ร่มเป็นสิ่งที่เราใช้ตอนฝนตก

“elephant”. “elephant” is an animal.

"ช้าง". “ช้าง” เป็นสัตว์

“doctor”. “doctor” is a person.

"หมอ". “หมอ” คือบุคคล

And “orange”. "orange" is a thing that we eat.

และ “ส้ม” “ส้ม” เป็นสิ่งที่เรากิน

Okay. Now, I’m going to say ‘a’ or ‘an’ in front of the nouns.

ตกลง. ตอนนี้ฉันจะพูดว่า 'a' หรือ 'an' หน้าคำนาม

I want you to listen and see if you can hear the difference.

ฉันอยากให้คุณฟังและดูว่าคุณสามารถได้ยินความแตกต่างหรือไม่

Okay…

We have “book”.

เรามี "หนังสือ"

In that case we say, “a book”. “a book”.

We have to say, “a book”.

The next one is “park”.

Remember, we put ‘a’ in front of words that begin with consonants.

จำไว้ว่าเราใส่ 'a' หน้าคำที่ขึ้นต้นด้วยพยัญชนะ

‘b’ and ‘p’ are consonants.

'b' และ 'p' เป็นพยัญชนะ

That’s why we say, “a book”, “a park”.

How about the next word?

We say ‘an’ because umbrella starts with a vowel: ‘u’.

We should we say?

Again, 'elephant' starts with a vowel.

ขอย้ำอีกครั้งว่า 'ช้าง' เริ่มต้นด้วยสระ

“a doctor”. “a doctor”.

"แพทย์". "แพทย์".

“a doctor”.

"แพทย์".

And the last word, “an orange”. “an orange”.

และคำสุดท้าย “ส้ม” "สีส้ม".

Again, we have to say, “an orange” because ‘o’ is a vowel.

เราต้องพูดว่า “ส้ม” อีกครั้ง เพราะ 'o' เป็นสระ

So, let’s go through each word one more time.

ดังนั้น เรามาดูแต่ละคำกันอีกครั้งหนึ่ง

“a book”. “a book”.
