In this video, we’re going to talk about using ‘a’ or ‘an’.

このビデオでは、「a」または「an」の使用について説明します。

We use ‘a’ or ‘an’ in front of nouns.

名詞の前に「a」または「an」を使います。

Well, what is a noun?

さて、名詞とは何でしょうか？

A noun is a person, place, thing, or animal.

名詞とは人、場所、物、動物のことです。

Okay, so let’s look at the board.

さて、それでは掲示板を見てみましょう。

The first noun we have is “banana”.

最初の名詞は「バナナ」です。

“banana”, starts with the consonant ‘b’.

「バナナ」は子音「b」で始まります。

So, we put “a banana”.

そこで「バナナ」を入れます。

“a banana”.

"バナナ"。

Look at the next word. “Apple”.

次の単語を見てください。 "りんご"。

In this case, the first letter is ‘a’.

この場合、最初の文字は「a」です。

‘a’ is a vowel.

「a」は母音です。

Remember the vowels are a, e, i, o, u,

母音は a、e、i、o、u なので、

so we have to put ‘an’.

「an」を付ける必要があることに注意してください。

“an apple”.

"ひとつのりんご"。

“cat”. Hmmm.

"猫"。うーん。

The first letter, ‘c’, is a consonant.

最初の文字「c」は子音です。

So, should we put, ‘a’ or ‘an’?

では、「a」と入力するべきでしょうか、それとも「an」と入力すべきでしょうか?

Remember, if it’s a consonant, we have to put ‘a’.

子音の場合は「a」を入力する必要があることに注意してください。

“a cat”.

"猫"。

The next word, “boy”.

次の言葉は「少年」。

Again, the word starts with a consonant: ‘b’.

この場合も、単語は子音「b」で始まります。

So, we have to say, “a boy”.

したがって、「男の子」と言わなければなりません。

The next word, “egg”, has the letter ‘e’ in front.

次の単語「egg」は先頭に文字「e」が付いています。

‘e’ is a vowel.

「e」は母音です。

So, what do we put?

We put ‘an’.

If we read it, it sounds like “an egg.”

読んでみると「卵」みたいですね。

“an egg”.

Okay, and the last word is “ant”.

さて、最後の言葉は「アリ」です。

“ant” starts with the vowel ‘a’.

「ant」は母音「a」で始まります。

So again, we must put……”an ant”.

したがって、もう一度、「アリ」を入れなければなりません。

“an ant”.

"アリ"。

Now, let’s go through these words together.

Keep in mind that when you have ‘an’ in front,

Remember, a noun is a person, place, thing or animal.

So let’s go through them one by one.

“a book”, “book” is a thing.

It’s a thing that we read.

“park”, is a place. It’s a place we go.

“umbrella” is a thing.

「傘」ってやつです。

Right. Umbrella is a thing that we use when it’s raining.

右。傘は雨が降ったときに使うものです。

“elephant”. “elephant” is an animal.

"象"。 「象」は動物です。

“doctor”. “doctor” is a person.

"医者"。 「医者」とは人です。

And “orange”. "orange" is a thing that we eat.

そして「オレンジ」。 「オレンジ」は私たちが食べるものです。

Okay. Now, I’m going to say ‘a’ or ‘an’ in front of the nouns.

わかった。ここで、名詞の前に「a」または「an」を言います。

I want you to listen and see if you can hear the difference.

違いが分かるかどうか、聴いてみてほしい。

Okay…

さて…

We have “book”.

「本」があります。

In that case we say, “a book”. “a book”.

その場合は「本」と言います。 "一冊の本"。

We have to say, “a book”.

「本」と言わなければなりません。

The next one is “park”.

次は「公園」です。

We say, “a park”. “a park”.

私たちは「公園」と言います。 "公園"。

Remember, we put ‘a’ in front of words that begin with consonants.

子音で始まる単語の前に「a」を付けることを忘れないでください。

‘b’ and ‘p’ are consonants.

「b」と「p」は子音です。

That’s why we say, “a book”, “a park”.

How about the next word?

Could you here the difference? “an umbrella”.

We say ‘an’ because umbrella starts with a vowel: ‘u’.

Again, 'elephant' starts with a vowel.
