In this lesson, I am going to teach you  if the letter ‘y’ is a consonant or vowel. 

ในบทเรียนนี้ ฉันจะสอนคุณว่าตัวอักษร 'y' เป็นพยัญชนะหรือสระ

I know many of you already  know the five main vowels:

a e i o and u

aeio และ u

So how can ‘y’ be a vowel?

แล้ว y จะเป็นสระได้อย่างไร?

Well that's what I’m going to talk about today.

First, let's just do a review of what  a consonant is, and what a vowel is. 

ก่อนอื่น เรามาทบทวนกันก่อนว่าพยัญชนะคืออะไร และสระคืออะไร

The English alphabet has 26 letters. 21 are consonants and 5 are vowels. 

ตัวอักษรภาษาอังกฤษมี 26 ตัวอักษร 21 ตัวเป็นพยัญชนะ และ 5 ตัวเป็นสระ

The letter ‘y’ is definitely  considered a consonant. 

ตัวอักษร 'y' ถือเป็นพยัญชนะอย่างแน่นอน

Let's look at these words: 

ลองดูคำเหล่านี้:

year

ปี

Yes, it has that clear ‘y’ /y/ consonant sound.

ใช่ มันมีเสียงพยัญชนะ 'y' /y/ ที่ชัดเจน

yellow

สีเหลือง

yesterday

เมื่อวาน

you

เธอ

young

ยัง เด็ก

your

ของเธอ

It has that unique /y/ consonant sound.

มันมีเสียงพยัญชนะที่เป็นเอกลักษณ์เฉพาะตัว

But it doesn't always have that consonant sound.

แต่ก็ไม่ได้มีเสียงพยัญชนะเสมอไป

Let's move on.

เดินหน้าต่อไป

‘y’ can make many vowel sounds.

'y' สามารถออกเสียงสระได้หลายเสียง

Let's look at the board.

มาดูที่บอร์ดกันบ้าง

‘y’ can make the long e sound.

'y' สามารถสร้างเสียง e ยาวได้

Like ‘candy’ or ‘monkey’.

เช่นเดียวกับ 'ขนม' หรือ 'ลิง'

‘y’ can make the short i sound.

'y' สามารถทำให้เสียงฉันสั้นได้

Like ‘gym’ or ‘bicycle’ or ‘system’.

เช่น 'ยิม' หรือ 'จักรยาน' หรือ 'ระบบ'

‘y’ can make the long i sound. Like ‘my’ or ‘sky’.

'y' สามารถทำให้เสียงฉันยาวได้ เช่น 'ของฉัน' หรือ 'ท้องฟ้า'

‘y’ is considered to be a vowel if:

'y' ถือเป็นสระถ้า:

Number one.

หมายเลขหนึ่ง

The word has no other vowel like ‘gym’.

คำนี้ไม่มีสระอื่นเหมือน 'ยิม'

All English words need at least one vowel.

ทุกคำภาษาอังกฤษต้องมีสระอย่างน้อยหนึ่งตัว

So ‘gym’ has ‘y’ as the vowel.

ดังนั้น 'gym' จึงมี 'y' เป็นสระ

Or ‘my’ or ‘sky’.

หรือ 'ของฉัน' หรือ 'ท้องฟ้า'

Number two.

หมายเลขสอง

The letter is at the end of a  word or syllable like ‘candy’. 

ตัวอักษรจะอยู่ท้ายคำหรือพยางค์ เช่น 'candy'

It's at the end. Or ‘bicycle’. 

มันอยู่ตอนท้าย หรือ 'จักรยาน'

‘bicycle’ has three syllables ‘bi-cy-cle’.

'จักรยาน' มีสามพยางค์ 'bi-cy-cle'

The ‘y’ is at the end of the second syllable.

'y' อยู่ท้ายพยางค์ที่สอง

‘bicycle’

'จักรยาน'

Or three, the letter is in the middle of a syllable like ‘system’.

หรือ 3 ตัวอักษร อยู่ตรงกลางพยางค์ เช่น 'ระบบ'

‘system’ has two syllables.

'ระบบ' มีสองพยางค์

‘sys-tem’

'sys-tem'

It needs a vowel.

มันต้องมีสระ

So ‘system’ The ‘y’ is the vowel.

ดังนั้น 'ระบบ' 'y' คือสระ

All right. Let's move on.

เอาล่ะ. เดินหน้าต่อไป

Is ‘y’ a vowel?

'y' เป็นสระหรือไม่?

Well ‘y’ is more commonly pronounced as a  vowel, but officially, it is a consonant. 

โดยทั่วไปแล้ว 'y' จะออกเสียงเป็นสระ แต่อย่างเป็นทางการแล้วมันคือพยัญชนะ

But it is very common for English  teachers, when teaching the vowels,  

แต่เป็นเรื่องปกติมากที่ครูสอนภาษาอังกฤษ

to teach ‘a e i o u and sometimes y’.

จะสอน 'aeiou และบางครั้งก็ y' เมื่อสอนสระ
