In this lesson, I am going to teach you  if the letter ‘y’ is a consonant or vowel. 

இந்த பாடத்தில், 'y' என்ற எழுத்து மெய் அல்லது உயிரெழுத்து என்பதை நான் உங்களுக்கு கற்பிக்கப் போகிறேன்.

I know many of you already  know the five main vowels: 

உங்களில் பலருக்கு ஏற்கனவே ஐந்து முக்கிய உயிரெழுத்துக்கள் தெரியும் என்று எனக்குத் தெரியும்:

a e i o and u

aeio மற்றும் u

So how can ‘y’ be a vowel?

அப்படியானால் 'y' எப்படி உயிரெழுத்து ஆகும்?

First, let's just do a review of what  a consonant is, and what a vowel is. 

முதலில், மெய் என்றால் என்ன, உயிர் என்றால் என்ன என்பதை மதிப்பாய்வு செய்வோம்.

The English alphabet has 26 letters. 21 are consonants and 5 are vowels. 

ஆங்கில எழுத்துக்களில் 26 எழுத்துக்கள் உள்ளன. 21 மெய்யெழுத்துகள் மற்றும் 5 உயிரெழுத்துக்கள்.

The letter ‘y’ is definitely  considered a consonant. 

'y' என்ற எழுத்து கண்டிப்பாக மெய்யெழுத்து என்று கருதப்படுகிறது.

Let's look at these words: 

இந்த வார்த்தைகளைப் பார்ப்போம்:

year

வருடம்

Yes, it has that clear ‘y’ /y/ consonant sound.

ஆம், அது தெளிவான 'y' /y/ மெய் ஒலியைக் கொண்டுள்ளது.

yellow

your

It has that unique /y/ consonant sound.

.

But it doesn't always have that consonant sound.

ஆனால் அது எப்போதும் அந்த மெய் ஒலியைக் கொண்டிருப்பதில்லை.

Let's move on.

தொடரலாம்.

‘y’ can make many vowel sounds.

'y' பல உயிர் ஒலிகளை உருவாக்க முடியும்.

Let's look at the board.

போர்டைப் பார்ப்போம்.

‘y’ can make the long e sound.

'y' நீண்ட இ ஒலியை உருவாக்க முடியும்.

Like ‘candy’ or ‘monkey’.

'மிட்டாய்' அல்லது 'குரங்கு' போன்றவை.

‘y’ can make the short i sound.

'y' ஆனது குறுகிய ஐ ஒலியை உருவாக்க முடியும்.

Like ‘gym’ or ‘bicycle’ or ‘system’.

'ஜிம்' அல்லது 'சைக்கிள்' அல்லது 'சிஸ்டம்' போன்றவை.

‘y’ can make the long i sound. Like ‘my’ or ‘sky’.

'y' ஐ நீண்ட ஐ ஒலியை உருவாக்க முடியும். 'என்' அல்லது 'ஆகாயம்' போல.

‘y’ is considered to be a vowel if:

'y' என்பது உயிரெழுத்துக்களாகக் கருதப்படுகிறது:

Number one.

எண் ஒன்று.

The word has no other vowel like ‘gym’.

இந்த வார்த்தைக்கு 'ஜிம்' போன்ற வேறு எந்த உயிரெழுத்தும் இல்லை.

All English words need at least one vowel.

அனைத்து ஆங்கில வார்த்தைகளுக்கும் குறைந்தது ஒரு உயிரெழுத்து தேவை.

So ‘gym’ has ‘y’ as the vowel.

எனவே 'ஜிம்' என்பது 'y' என்பது உயிரெழுத்து.

Or ‘my’ or ‘sky’.

அல்லது 'என்' அல்லது 'ஆகாயம்'.

Number two.

எண் இரண்டு.

The letter is at the end of a  word or syllable like ‘candy’. 

'மிட்டாய்' போன்ற ஒரு சொல் அல்லது எழுத்தின் முடிவில் எழுத்து உள்ளது.

It's at the end. Or ‘bicycle’. 

அது முடிவில் உள்ளது. அல்லது 'சைக்கிள்'.

‘bicycle’ has three syllables ‘bi-cy-cle’.

'சைக்கிள்' என்பது 'பை-சை-கிள்' என்ற மூன்று எழுத்துக்களைக் கொண்டுள்ளது.

The ‘y’ is at the end of the second syllable.

இரண்டாவது எழுத்தின் முடிவில் 'y' உள்ளது.

‘bicycle’

'சைக்கிள்'

Or three, the letter is in the middle of a syllable like ‘system’.

அல்லது மூன்று, எழுத்து 'அமைப்பு' போன்ற ஒரு எழுத்தின் நடுவில் உள்ளது.

‘system’ has two syllables.

'அமைப்பு' இரண்டு எழுத்துக்களைக் கொண்டுள்ளது.

‘sys-tem’

'sys-tem'

It needs a vowel.

இதற்கு உயிர் வேண்டும்.

So ‘system’ The ‘y’ is the vowel.

எனவே 'அமைப்பு' என்பது 'y' என்பது உயிரெழுத்து.

All right. Let's move on.

Is ‘y’ a vowel?

'y' என்பது உயிரெழுத்தா?

Well ‘y’ is more commonly pronounced as a  vowel, but officially, it is a consonant. 

சரி 'y' என்பது பொதுவாக உயிரெழுத்து என உச்சரிக்கப்படுகிறது, ஆனால் அதிகாரப்பூர்வமாக, இது ஒரு மெய்.

But it is very common for English  teachers, when teaching the vowels,  

ஆனால் ஆங்கில ஆசிரியர்கள், உயிரெழுத்துக்களைக் கற்பிக்கும் போது,

to teach ‘a e i o u and sometimes y’.
