In this lesson, I am going to teach you  if the letter ‘y’ is a consonant or vowel. 

이번 강의에서는 'y'가 자음인지 모음인지 가르쳐 드리겠습니다.

I know many of you already  know the five main vowels: 

나는 여러분 중 많은 사람들이 이미 다섯 개의 주요 모음인

a e i o and u

aeio와 u 를 알고 있다는 것을 압니다.

So how can ‘y’ be a vowel?

그렇다면 'y'는 어떻게 모음이 될 수 있습니까?

First, let's just do a review of what  a consonant is, and what a vowel is. 

먼저 자음이 무엇이고 모음이 무엇인지 간단히 살펴보겠습니다.

The English alphabet has 26 letters. 21 are consonants and 5 are vowels. 

영어 알파벳은 26자입니다. 21은 자음, 5는 모음입니다.

The letter ‘y’ is definitely  considered a consonant. 

문자 'y'는 확실히 자음으로 간주됩니다.

Let's look at these words: 

다음 단어를 살펴보겠습니다.

year

year

Yes, it has that clear ‘y’ /y/ consonant sound.

예, 명확한 'y' /y/ 자음이 있습니다.

yellow

노란색

yesterday

어제

you

you

young

young

your

your

It has that unique /y/ consonant sound.

독특한 /y/ 자음이 있습니다.

But it doesn't always have that consonant sound.

그러나 항상 그 자음 소리가 나는 것은 아닙니다.

Let's move on.

‘y’ can make many vowel sounds.

'y'는 많은 모음 소리를 낼 수 있습니다.

Let's look at the board.

보드를 봅시다.

‘y’ can make the long e sound.

'y'는 긴 소리를 낼 수 있습니다.

Like ‘candy’ or ‘monkey’.

'사탕'이나 '원숭이'처럼.

‘y’ can make the short i sound.

'y'는 짧은 i 소리를 낼 수 있습니다.

Like ‘gym’ or ‘bicycle’ or ‘system’.

'체육관' 또는 '자전거' 또는 '시스템'과 같습니다.

‘y’ can make the long i sound. Like ‘my’ or ‘sky’.

'y'는 긴 소리를 낼 수 있습니다. '나의' 또는 '하늘'처럼.

‘y’ is considered to be a vowel if:

'y'는 다음과 같은 경우 모음으로 간주됩니다.

Number one.

1번.

The word has no other vowel like ‘gym’.

이 단어에는 'gym'과 같은 다른 모음이 없습니다.

All English words need at least one vowel.

모든 영어 단어에는 적어도 하나의 모음이 필요합니다.

So ‘gym’ has ‘y’ as the vowel.

따라서 'gym'은 모음으로 'y'를 갖습니다.

Or ‘my’ or ‘sky’.

또는 '나의' 또는 '하늘'.

Number two.

The letter is at the end of a  word or syllable like ‘candy’. 

'candy'와 같이 단어나 음절 끝에 옵니다.

It's at the end. Or ‘bicycle’. 

마지막에 있습니다. 또는 '자전거'.

‘bicycle’ has three syllables ‘bi-cy-cle’.

'bicycle'은 'bi-cy-cle'의 3음절입니다.

The ‘y’ is at the end of the second syllable.

'y'는 두 번째 음절 끝에 있습니다.

‘bicycle’

'자전거'

Or three, the letter is in the middle of a syllable like ‘system’.

또는 3, 문자는 '시스템'과 같이 음절 중간에 있습니다.

‘system’ has two syllables.

'시스템'에는 두 개의 음절이 있습니다.

‘sys-tem’

'sys-tem'

It needs a vowel.

모음이 필요합니다.

So ‘system’ The ‘y’ is the vowel.

그래서 'system' 'y'는 모음입니다.

Is ‘y’ a vowel?

y는 모음인가요?

Well ‘y’ is more commonly pronounced as a  vowel, but officially, it is a consonant. 

음 'y'는 모음으로 더 일반적으로 발음되지만 공식적으로는 자음입니다.

But it is very common for English  teachers, when teaching the vowels,  

그러나 영어 선생님들이 모음

to teach ‘a e i o u and sometimes y’.

을 가르칠 때 'aeiou, 때때로 y'를 가르치는 것은 매우 흔한 일입니다.
