In this lesson, I am going to teach you  if the letter ‘y’ is a consonant or vowel. 

এই পাঠে, আমি আপনাকে শেখাতে যাচ্ছি যদি 'y' অক্ষরটি একটি ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণ বা স্বরবর্ণ হয়।

I know many of you already  know the five main vowels:

a e i o and u

aeio এবং u

So how can ‘y’ be a vowel?

First, let's just do a review of what  a consonant is, and what a vowel is. 

প্রথমে, আসুন শুধু একটি ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণ কি এবং একটি স্বরবর্ণ কি তার একটি পর্যালোচনা করি।

The English alphabet has 26 letters. 21 are consonants and 5 are vowels. 

ইংরেজি বর্ণমালায় 26টি অক্ষর রয়েছে। 21টি ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণ এবং 5টি স্বরবর্ণ।

The letter ‘y’ is definitely  considered a consonant. 

'y' অক্ষরটি অবশ্যই একটি ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণ হিসেবে বিবেচিত হয়।

Let's look at these words: 

আসুন এই শব্দগুলি দেখি:

year

বছর

Yes, it has that clear ‘y’ /y/ consonant sound.

হ্যাঁ, এটিতে স্পষ্ট 'y' /y/ ব্যঞ্জনধ্বনি রয়েছে।

yellow

হলুদ

yesterday

গতকাল

you

আপনি

young

তরুণ

your

আপনার

It has that unique /y/ consonant sound.

এটি অনন্য /y/ ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণ শব্দ আছে.

But it doesn't always have that consonant sound.

কিন্তু সবসময় সেই ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণ ধ্বনি থাকে না।

Let's move on.

চল এগোই.

‘y’ can make many vowel sounds.

'y' অনেক স্বরধ্বনি করতে পারে।

Let's look at the board.

এর বোর্ড তাকান.

‘y’ can make the long e sound.

'y' দীর্ঘ ই শব্দ করতে পারে।

Like ‘candy’ or ‘monkey’.

যেমন 'মিছরি' বা 'বানর'।

‘y’ can make the short i sound.

'y' ছোট i শব্দ করতে পারে।

Like ‘gym’ or ‘bicycle’ or ‘system’.

যেমন 'জিম' বা 'বাইসাইকেল' বা 'সিস্টেম'।

‘y’ can make the long i sound. Like ‘my’ or ‘sky’.

'y' দীর্ঘ i শব্দ করতে পারে। যেমন 'আমার' বা 'আকাশ'।

‘y’ is considered to be a vowel if:

'y' একটি স্বরবর্ণ হিসাবে বিবেচিত হয় যদি:

Number one.

এক নম্বর।

The word has no other vowel like ‘gym’.

শব্দের 'জিম'-এর মতো অন্য কোনো স্বরবর্ণ নেই।

All English words need at least one vowel.

সমস্ত ইংরেজি শব্দের অন্তত একটি স্বরবর্ণ প্রয়োজন।

So ‘gym’ has ‘y’ as the vowel.

তাই 'জিম'-এর স্বরবর্ণ হিসেবে 'y' আছে।

Or ‘my’ or ‘sky’.

অথবা 'আমার' বা 'আকাশ'।

Number two.

নাম্বার দুই.

The letter is at the end of a  word or syllable like ‘candy’. 

অক্ষরটি 'ক্যান্ডি' এর মতো একটি শব্দ বা শব্দাংশের শেষে।

It's at the end. Or ‘bicycle’. 

এটা শেষের দিকে। বা 'সাইকেল'।

‘bicycle’ has three syllables ‘bi-cy-cle’.

'bicycle'-এর তিনটি শব্দাংশ আছে 'bi-cycle-cle'।

The ‘y’ is at the end of the second syllable.

দ্বিতীয় শব্দাংশের শেষে 'y' আছে।

‘bicycle’

'বাইসাইকেল'

Or three, the letter is in the middle of a syllable like ‘system’.

বা তিনটি, অক্ষরটি 'সিস্টেম'-এর মতো শব্দাংশের মাঝখানে।

‘system’ has two syllables.

'system'-এর দুটি সিলেবল আছে।

‘sys-tem’

'sys-tem'

It needs a vowel.

এর একটি স্বরবর্ণ প্রয়োজন।

So ‘system’ The ‘y’ is the vowel.

তাই 'সিস্টেম' 'y' হল স্বরবর্ণ।

All right. Let's move on.

ঠিক আছে. চল এগোই.

Is ‘y’ a vowel?

'y' একটি স্বরবর্ণ?

Well ‘y’ is more commonly pronounced as a  vowel, but officially, it is a consonant. 

ভাল 'y' সাধারণত একটি স্বরবর্ণ হিসাবে উচ্চারিত হয়, কিন্তু আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে, এটি একটি ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণ।

But it is very common for English  teachers, when teaching the vowels,  

কিন্তু ইংরেজি শিক্ষকদের জন্য স্বরবর্ণ

to teach ‘a e i o u and sometimes y’.

শেখানোর সময় 'aeiou এবং কখনও কখনও y' শেখানো খুবই সাধারণ।
