In this lesson, I am going to teach you  if the letter ‘y’ is a consonant or vowel.

I know many of you already  know the five main vowels:

So how can ‘y’ be a vowel?

First, let's just do a review of what  a consonant is, and what a vowel is. 

Primero, repasemos qué es una consonante y qué es una vocal.

The English alphabet has 26 letters. 21 are consonants and 5 are vowels. 

El alfabeto inglés tiene 26 letras. 21 son consonantes y 5 son vocales.

The letter ‘y’ is definitely  considered a consonant. 

La letra 'y' definitivamente se considera una consonante.

Let's look at these words:

year

Yes, it has that clear ‘y’ /y/ consonant sound.

Sí, tiene ese claro sonido de consonante 'y' /y/.

yellow

amarillo

yesterday

ayer

you

young

your

Tiene ese sonido consonante /y/ único

It has that unique /y/ consonant sound.

.

But it doesn't always have that consonant sound.

Pero no siempre tiene ese sonido consonante.

Let's move on.

Vamonos.

‘y’ can make many vowel sounds.

'y' puede hacer muchos sonidos de vocales.

Let's look at the board.

Miremos el tablero.

‘y’ can make the long e sound.

'y' puede hacer el sonido e largo.

Like ‘candy’ or ‘monkey’.

Como 'caramelo' o 'mono'.

‘y’ can make the short i sound.

'y' puede hacer que suene la i corta.

Like ‘gym’ or ‘bicycle’ or ‘system’.

Como 'gimnasio' o 'bicicleta' o 'sistema'.

‘y’ can make the long i sound. Like ‘my’ or ‘sky’.

'y' puede hacer que suene la i larga. Como 'mi' o 'cielo'.

‘y’ is considered to be a vowel if:

'y' se considera una vocal si:

Number one.

Número uno.

The word has no other vowel like ‘gym’.

La palabra no tiene otra vocal como 'gimnasio'.

All English words need at least one vowel.

Todas las palabras en inglés necesitan al menos una vocal.

So ‘gym’ has ‘y’ as the vowel.

Así que 'gimnasio' tiene 'y' como vocal.

Or ‘my’ or ‘sky’.

Number two.

The letter is at the end of a  word or syllable like ‘candy’. 

La letra está al final de una palabra o sílaba como 'caramelo'.

It's at the end. Or ‘bicycle’. 

Está al final. O 'bicicleta'.

‘bicycle’ has three syllables ‘bi-cy-cle’.

'bicicleta' tiene tres sílabas 'bi-cy-cle'.

The ‘y’ is at the end of the second syllable.

La 'y' está al final de la segunda sílaba.

‘bicycle’

'bicicleta'

Or three, the letter is in the middle of a syllable like ‘system’.

O tres, la letra está en medio de una sílaba como 'sistema'.

‘system’ has two syllables.

'sistema' tiene dos sílabas.

‘sys-tem’

'sys-tem'

It needs a vowel.

Necesita una vocal.

So ‘system’ The ‘y’ is the vowel.

Is ‘y’ a vowel?

Well ‘y’ is more commonly pronounced as a  vowel, but officially, it is a consonant.

But it is very common for English  teachers, when teaching the vowels,

to teach ‘a e i o u and sometimes y’.
