In this lesson, I am going to teach you  if the letter ‘y’ is a consonant or vowel. 

या धड्यात मी तुम्हाला शिकवणार आहे की 'y' अक्षर व्यंजन किंवा स्वर आहे का.

I know many of you already  know the five main vowels:

a e i o and u

aeio आणि u

So how can ‘y’ be a vowel?

First, let's just do a review of what  a consonant is, and what a vowel is. 

प्रथम, व्यंजन म्हणजे काय आणि स्वर म्हणजे काय याचा आढावा घेऊ.

The English alphabet has 26 letters. 21 are consonants and 5 are vowels. 

इंग्रजी वर्णमाला 26 अक्षरे आहेत. 21 व्यंजने आहेत आणि 5 स्वर आहेत.

The letter ‘y’ is definitely  considered a consonant. 

'य' हे अक्षर निश्चितपणे व्यंजन मानले जाते.

Let's look at these words: 

चला हे शब्द पाहू:

year

वर्ष

Yes, it has that clear ‘y’ /y/ consonant sound.

होय, त्यात स्पष्ट 'y' /y/ व्यंजन ध्वनी आहे.

yellow

पिवळा

yesterday

काल

you

तुम्ही

young

तरुण

your

आहात,

It has that unique /y/ consonant sound.

त्याचा असा अद्वितीय /y/ व्यंजन आवाज आहे.

But it doesn't always have that consonant sound.

पण त्यात नेहमी तो व्यंजनाचा आवाज नसतो.

Let's move on.

चला पुढे जाऊया.

‘y’ can make many vowel sounds.

'y' अनेक स्वर आवाज काढू शकतो.

Let's look at the board.

चला बोर्ड बघूया.

‘y’ can make the long e sound.

'y' लांब ई आवाज करू शकतो.

Like ‘candy’ or ‘monkey’.

'कॅंडी' किंवा 'माकड' सारखे.

‘y’ can make the short i sound.

'y' लहान i आवाज करू शकतो.

Like ‘gym’ or ‘bicycle’ or ‘system’.

जसे 'जिम' किंवा 'सायकल' किंवा 'सिस्टीम'.

‘y’ can make the long i sound. Like ‘my’ or ‘sky’.

'y' लाँग i आवाज करू शकतो. जसे 'माझे' किंवा 'आकाश'.

‘y’ is considered to be a vowel if:

'y' हा स्वर मानला जातो जर:

Number one.

क्रमांक एक.

The word has no other vowel like ‘gym’.

या शब्दाला 'जिम' सारखा दुसरा स्वर नाही.

All English words need at least one vowel.

सर्व इंग्रजी शब्दांना किमान एक स्वर आवश्यक असतो.

So ‘gym’ has ‘y’ as the vowel.

तर 'जिम' मध्ये 'य' हा स्वर आहे.

Or ‘my’ or ‘sky’.

किंवा 'माझे' किंवा 'आकाश'.

Number two.

क्रमांक दोन.

The letter is at the end of a  word or syllable like ‘candy’. 

'कॅंडी' सारख्या शब्दाच्या किंवा अक्षराच्या शेवटी हे अक्षर आहे.

It's at the end. Or ‘bicycle’. 

ते शेवटी आहे. किंवा 'सायकल'.

‘bicycle’ has three syllables ‘bi-cy-cle’.

'bicycle' मध्ये 'bi-cycle-cle' अशी तीन अक्षरे आहेत.

The ‘y’ is at the end of the second syllable.

दुसऱ्या अक्षराच्या शेवटी 'य' आहे.

‘bicycle’

'सायकल'

Or three, the letter is in the middle of a syllable like ‘system’.

किंवा तीन, हे अक्षर 'सिस्टम' सारख्या अक्षराच्या मध्यभागी आहे.

‘system’ has two syllables.

'system' मध्ये दोन अक्षरे आहेत.

‘sys-tem’

'sys-tem'

It needs a vowel.

त्याला स्वर आवश्यक आहे.

So ‘system’ The ‘y’ is the vowel.

तर 'प्रणाली' द 'य' हा स्वर आहे.

All right. Let's move on.

Is ‘y’ a vowel?

'य' हा स्वर आहे का?

Well ‘y’ is more commonly pronounced as a  vowel, but officially, it is a consonant. 

तसेच 'y' हा स्वर म्हणून अधिक सामान्यपणे उच्चारला जातो, परंतु अधिकृतपणे, तो एक व्यंजन आहे.

But it is very common for English  teachers, when teaching the vowels,  

पण इंग्रजी शिक्षकांना स्वर शिकवताना

to teach ‘a e i o u and sometimes y’.

'aeiou आणि कधी y' शिकवणे अगदी सामान्य आहे.
