So what is a modal verb?

ဒါဆို modal verb ဆိုတာ ဘာလဲ။

Modal verbs are helping verbs or auxiliary verbs.

Modal ကြိယာများသည် ကူညီကြိယာများ သို့မဟုတ် အရန်ကြိယာများဖြစ်သည်။

They give more information and more specific meaning to the main verb in a sentence.

Modal verbs can express ability, suggestion, permission, certainty, possibility.

I will briefly talk about all of these usages in this video.

Let's have a look at the grammar rules of modal verbs.

I can swim very well.

‘can’ is our modal verb.

Modal verbs always come first before the main verb in a verb phrase.

ကြိယာစာစုတစ်ခုရှိ အဓိကကြိယာရှေ့တွင် Modal ကြိယာများသည် အမြဲပထမဖြစ်သည်။

Here's our main verb.

ဤသည်မှာ ကျွန်ုပ်တို့၏ အဓိကကြိယာဖြစ်သည်။

Here is our modal verb – ‘can’ comes first.

I can swim very well.

Let's look at the next sentence.

You should be more careful.

Modal verbs are followed by a bare infinitive.

Modal ကြိယာများနောက်တွင် bare infinitive ဖြစ်သည်။

This is our bare infinitive.

ဤသည်မှာ ကျွန်ုပ်တို့၏ အချည်းနှီးသော အဆုံးမဲ့ဖြစ်သည်။

There is no ‘to’ after ‘should’.

'to' 'သင့်' နောက်မှာ မရှိဘူး။

‘You should to be more careful’ is wrong.

'ပိုသတိထားသင့်တယ်' ဆိုတာ မှားပါတယ်။

‘You should be more careful’ is correct.

'ပိုသတိထားသင့်တယ်' ဆိုတာ မှန်ပါတယ်။

Let's have a look at the next sentence.

နောက်စာကြောင်းကို ကြည့်ရအောင်။

You have to eat quickly.

မြန်မြန်စားရမယ်။

Semi-modal verbs are followed by ‘to’ in a sentence.

Semi-modal ကြိယာများကို ဝါကျတစ်ခုတွင် 'to' ဖြင့် နောက်တွင် ထားသည်။

You have to eat quickly.

မြန်မြန်စားရမယ်။

Hang on.

မြဲမြဲကိုင်ထားသည်။

I just taught you not to use ‘to’.

'to' မသုံးတတ်အောင် သင်ပေးခဲ့တယ်။

When you have ‘should’, don't use ‘to’. ‘should’ is a modal verb.

သင့်တွင် 'သင့်' ရှိပါက 'to' မသုံးပါနှင့်။ 'should' သည် modal verb ဖြစ်သည်။

‘have to’ is a semi-modal verb.

'have to' သည် semi-modal verb ဖြစ်သည်။

How do you know this?

ဒါကို မင်းဘယ်လိုသိလဲ။

Please just memorize it.

‘You have to eat quickly’ is correct.

'မြန်မြန်စားရမယ်' မှန်တယ်။

Moving on.

လူပြိန်း။

Layla works hard.

Layla က အလုပ်ကြိုးစားတယ်။

Here we have an ‘s’ ending.

ဤတွင် ကျွန်ုပ်တို့တွင် 's' ဇာတ်သိမ်းရှိသည်။

This is correct.

ဒါမှန်တယ်။

Layla must work hard.

Layla အလုပ်ကြိုးစားရမယ်။

There is no ‘s’ here.

And there is no ‘s’ on the modal.

modal တွင် 's' မရှိပါ။

When we have modal verbs, we never put ‘s,’ ‘ed,’ or ‘ing’ endings.

ကျွန်ုပ်တို့တွင် modal ကြိယာများရှိပါက 's' 'ed' သို့မဟုတ် 'ing' အဆုံးသတ်များကို ဘယ်တော့မှ မထည့်ပါ။

‘Layla must work hard’ is correct.

Lastly, let's look at negatives.

နောက်ဆုံးအနေနဲ့ အနုတ်လက္ခဏာတွေကို ကြည့်ကြရအောင်။

I eat.

ငါစားတယ်။

I don't eat.

ငါမစားဘူး။

‘don't’ is our negative.

'မလုပ်' သည် ကျွန်ုပ်တို့၏ အဆိုးမြင်မှုဖြစ်သည်။

I should eat.

စားသင့်တယ်။

I should not eat.

မစားသင့်ဘူး။

‘not’ is our negative.

'မဟုတ်' သည် ကျွန်ုပ်တို့၏ အဆိုးမြင်မှုဖြစ်သည်။

When we have a modal verb, we do not use ‘doesn't’ or ‘don't’ here.

ကျွန်ုပ်တို့တွင် modal verb တစ်ခုရှိသောအခါ၊ ဤနေရာတွင် 'doesn't' သို့မဟုတ် 'don't' ကို မသုံးပါ။

We only use ‘not’.

‘I should not eat’ is correct.

Now that we know more about the grammar of modal verbs,

These ones express ability.

‘can’ and ‘able to’ I can dance.

‘can’ is our modal verb.

It shows we have an ability.

‘able to’ ‘able to’ is a semi-modal verb.

'လုပ်နိုင်' 'နိုင်' သည် semi-modal ကြိယာဖြစ်သည်။

We know that because ‘to’ is here.

'to' က ဒီမှာရှိလို့ သိတယ်။

I’m able to swim.

ငါရေကူးနိုင်ပြီ။

I’m not able to cook.

‘able to’ uses ‘not’ in negative form.

‘I’m not able to cook’ shows inability.

Let's move on some more examples.

Let's take a look at some modals that express advice and suggestions.

‘should’ is a modal that gives us advice or suggestion.

‘You should stop smoking.’

Here's that ‘not’.

The negative form.

Now, ‘ought not to’ is not that common, but you may hear it once in a while.

အခု 'မဖြစ်သင့်ဘူး' ဆိုတာက သာမန်မဟုတ်ပေမယ့် တစ်ချိန်က ကြားနေရလိမ့်မယ်။

Let's move on to some more examples.

‘may not’ that's our modal verb in negative.

You can go home now.

We talked about ‘can’ and it was used for ability.

‘can’ is also used for permission.

It's possible.

Possible means we are not hundred percent sure.

We don't really know. That's a possibility.

Which modal expresses inability?

Well, we know ‘can’ expresses ability.
