English Vocabulary: Humid

안녕하세요 여러분. 저는 에스더입니다.

And in this video, I'm going to teach  you a very important English word. 

그리고 이번 영상에서는 아주 중요한 영어 단어 하나를 가르쳐 드릴 것입니다.

Now, everybody in Korea should know this word  because it gets this way every summer in Korea,  

이제 한국의 모든 사람들은 이 단어를 알아야 합니다.

right? Well not just in the summer,  but also in some other seasons. 

여름뿐 아니라 다른 계절에도 마찬가지입니다.

And that word that we're going  to learn today is ‘humid’. 

그리고 오늘 배울 단어는 'humid'입니다.

Again, ‘humid’. So this word, you need to know it,  

역시나 '습기'. 그래서 이 단어를 알아야 하고,

and you especially need to mention this word when  you describe Korea's weather to any foreigners, 

특히 외국인에게 한국의 날씨를 설명할 때 이 단어를 언급해야 합니다

Okay. So if they ask “What's the weather  

. 그래서 그들이 "

like in Korea?”, you have to say “humid”. Well what does ‘humid’ mean? 

한국의 날씨가 어때?"라고 물으면 "습하다"라고 말해야 합니다. 그렇다면 '습하다'는 무슨 뜻일까요?

Well again, ‘humid’ is used to describe weather. It means that it's very wet and hot, right? 

다시 말하지만 '습한'은 날씨를 설명하는 데 사용됩니다. 아주 습하고 덥다는 뜻이죠?

You know what I mean. So even my best friend, she comes to  

당신은 내가 의미하는 바를 알고 있습니다. 그래서 내 가장 친한 친구도 내가 태어난

Korea every year from Southern California, which is where I'm from, 

남부 캘리포니아에서 매년 한국에 오고

and she complains about this all the time. “It's so humid, right?” 

항상 이것에 대해 불평한다. "너무 습하죠?"

“It's so hot and wet.” And she complains about this  

“너무 덥고 습해요.” 그리고 그녀는 이것에 대해 불평합니다.

because where we're from, it's not like that. 

왜냐하면 우리가 어디에서 왔는지, 그렇지 않기 때문입니다.

It's hot, but it doesn't get very humid. So let's look at the board for some examples  

덥긴 하지만 습도가 높지는 않습니다. 그럼 이 단어를 사용하는 방법에 대한 몇 가지 예를 보드에서 살펴보겠습니다

on how to use the word. Okay.

So here it is. “Today is very humid.” 

여기 있습니다. "오늘은 매우 습합니다."

“Today is very humid.” So that's the word I want to teach you today. 

"오늘은 매우 습합니다." 이것이 제가 오늘 여러분에게 가르치고 싶은 말씀입니다.

‘humid’ But there are some other ways  

'습한' 하지만

to say the same thing instead of ‘humid’. We can say a couple of other words. 

'습한' 대신 같은 것을 말하는 다른 방법이 있습니다. 몇 가지 다른 단어를 말할 수 있습니다.

For example, we can say, “Today is very muggy.” “Today is very muggy.” 

예를 들어, "오늘은 매우 후덥지근하다"라고 말할 수 있습니다. "오늘은 매우 후덥지근합니다."

Okay, ‘muggy’ means humid. Again, hot and wet. 

자, 'muggy'는 습기가 있다는 뜻입니다. 다시 말하지만, 덥고 습합니다.

We can also say, “Today is very sticky.” “Today is very sticky.” 

"오늘은 매우 끈끈하다"고 말할 수도 있습니다. "오늘은 매우 끈끈합니다."

So ‘humid’, ‘muggy’, and ‘sticky’ all have the  same meaning when you're describing the weather. 

따라서 날씨를 설명할 때 'humid', 'muggy', 'sticky'는 모두 같은 의미입니다.

Now, I told you that where I'm from it's  not humid, it's hot, but it's not humid, 

자, 제가 있는 곳이 습하지 않다고 말씀드렸는데요, 덥지만 습하지 않은데,

so what's the opposite of humid? That word is ‘dry’. 

습함의 반대말은 무엇인가요? 그 단어는 '마른'입니다.

So if it's not humid, I can  say, “Today is very dry.” 

그래서 습하지 않다면 '오늘은 매우 건조하다'라고 말할 수 있습니다.

“Today is very dry.” Okay, well, let's look  

"오늘은 매우 건조합니다." 자,

at some more example sentences together. Okay, let's look at some example sentences. 

예문을 더 함께 살펴보겠습니다. 자, 몇 가지 예문을 살펴보겠습니다.

“It's too humid. Turn on the air conditioner.” “It's too humid. Turn on the air-conditioner.” 

“너무 습해요. 에어컨 틀어.” “너무 습해요. 에어컨 틀어.”

“I hate humid weather. It's too sticky.” “I hate humid weather. It's too sticky.” 

“습한 날씨가 싫어요. 너무 끈적끈적해.” “습한 날씨가 싫어요. 너무 끈적끈적해.”

“The rain makes it muggy.” “The rain makes it muggy.” 

"비 때문에 후덥지근합니다." "비 때문에 후덥지근합니다."

“California is dry, but Florida is humid.” “California is dry, but Florida is humid.” 

"캘리포니아는 건조하지만 플로리다는 습합니다." "캘리포니아는 건조하지만 플로리다는 습합니다."

Okay, so in this video we  learned the word ‘humid’.

Make sure you guys remember it. It's a very important word in Korea

Now, as for me, I've been here for a couple of  years, and I'm still trying to get used to it,
