One of the main reasons why we use passive voice is because we want to emphasize

the receiver instead of the doer.

For example, “Leonardo Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa.”

ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ, "ಲಿಯೊನಾರ್ಡೊ ಡಾ ವಿನ್ಸಿ ಮೋನಾಲಿಸಾವನ್ನು ಚಿತ್ರಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ."

In this sentence, which is an active voice,

ಸಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿಯಾಗಿರುವ ಈ ವಾಕ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ,

Leonardo is our focus, the painter.

The Mona Lisa, the painting, is the receiver.

ಮೋನಾಲಿಸಾ, ಪೇಂಟಿಂಗ್, ರಿಸೀವರ್ ಆಗಿದೆ.

We want to switch them to where now the receiver is in the beginning sentence and the doer is at the end.

ನಾವು ಅವುಗಳನ್ನು ಈಗ ರಿಸೀವರ್ ಆರಂಭಿಕ ವಾಕ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಮಾಡುವವರು ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವ ಸ್ಥಳಕ್ಕೆ ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಲು ಬಯಸುತ್ತೇವೆ.

So now our sentence is, “The Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo DaVinci.”

Our focus is now on the receiver, the Mona Lisa, rather than the painter, Leonardo DaVinci.

Another reason that we change the sentence to the passive voice, is because we do not

ನಾವು ವಾಕ್ಯವನ್ನು ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿಗೆ ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಲು ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಕಾರಣವೆಂದರೆ,

know the doer of the action.

ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡುವವರು ನಮಗೆ ತಿಳಿದಿಲ್ಲ.

For example, “Somebody stole my cell phone.”

ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ, "ಯಾರೋ ನನ್ನ ಸೆಲ್ ಫೋನ್ ಅನ್ನು ಕದ್ದಿದ್ದಾರೆ."

I do not know who.

ಯಾರೆಂದು ನನಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ.

So instead, I can express this in the passive voice.

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಬದಲಿಗೆ, ನಾನು ಇದನ್ನು ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಪಡಿಸಬಹುದು.

“My cell phone was stolen.”

"ನನ್ನ ಸೆಲ್ ಫೋನ್ ಕದ್ದಿದೆ."

And again, since we don't really know who did it,

ಮತ್ತೊಮ್ಮೆ, ಇದನ್ನು ಯಾರು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆಂದು ನಮಗೆ ನಿಜವಾಗಿಯೂ ತಿಳಿದಿಲ್ಲವಾದ್ದರಿಂದ,

we want to focus more on the phone instead.

Another reason to use the passive voice could be the doer is just not that important.

For example, “The company was founded in 1955.”

ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ, "ಕಂಪನಿಯನ್ನು 1955 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಲಾಯಿತು."

We may or may not know who founded the company, but is not important.

What is important is that the company was founded in 1955.

We may or may not know who built the house.

But again, it's not important.

What is important is the house was built in 1955.

Another reason to use the passive voice is because

sometimes we don't want to blame or say someone is responsible for something.

ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ನಾವು ದೂಷಿಸಲು ಅಥವಾ ಯಾರನ್ನಾದರೂ ಯಾವುದನ್ನಾದರೂ ಹೊಣೆಗಾರ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಲು ಬಯಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

For example, “Mistakes were made.”

ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ, "ತಪ್ಪುಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡಲಾಗಿದೆ."

Now, mistakes were made by someone,

ಈಗ, ಯಾರೋ ತಪ್ಪುಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ,

but we don't want to blame that person.

ಆದರೆ ನಾವು ಆ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ದೂಷಿಸಲು ಬಯಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

We don't want to say it is their fault. So instead,

we just leave them off and say,

Another reason to use the passive voice is because

the doer is not a specific person.

ಮಾಡುವವರು ನಿರ್ದಿಷ್ಟ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲ.

For example, “English is spoken in many countries around the world.”

ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ, "ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ ಅನ್ನು ಪ್ರಪಂಚದಾದ್ಯಂತ ಅನೇಕ ದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ."

We could add “by many people”

ನಾವು "ಅನೇಕ ಜನರಿಂದ" ಸೇರಿಸಬಹುದು

but because it's a really an unspecified group of people,

ಆದರೆ ಇದು ನಿಜವಾಗಿಯೂ ಅನಿರ್ದಿಷ್ಟ ಜನರ ಗುಂಪಾಗಿರುವುದರಿಂದ,

we kind of just leave it off because it's not very necessary.

And the last reason why we use passive voice,

is for academic writing.

ಶೈಕ್ಷಣಿಕ ಬರವಣಿಗೆಗಾಗಿ.

Whenever you're doing academic writing, such as essays or articles,

ನೀವು ಪ್ರಬಂಧಗಳು ಅಥವಾ ಲೇಖನಗಳಂತಹ ಶೈಕ್ಷಣಿಕ ಬರವಣಿಗೆಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವಾಗ,

we want to make it as least personal as possible

ನಾವು ಅದನ್ನು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾದಷ್ಟು ಕಡಿಮೆ ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕವಾಗಿ

and as professional as possible.

“I interviewed three people.”

Well you can see we have the pronoun ‘I’.

ನಾವು 'ನಾನು' ಎಂಬ ಸರ್ವನಾಮವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೇವೆ ಎಂದು ನೀವು ನೋಡಬಹುದು.

Well we don't want to use that.

ಸರಿ ನಾವು ಅದನ್ನು ಬಳಸಲು ಬಯಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

We want to switch the sentence over to the passive voice.

ನಾವು ವಾಕ್ಯವನ್ನು ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯ ಧ್ವನಿಗೆ ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಲು ಬಯಸುತ್ತೇವೆ.

“Three people were interviewed.”

"ಮೂರು ಜನರನ್ನು ಸಂದರ್ಶಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ."

I could say “by me”

ನಾನು "ನನ್ನಿಂದ" ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಬಹುದು

but again, we want to take out the ‘I’ and 'MEs' make it less personal as possible

ಆದರೆ ಮತ್ತೊಮ್ಮೆ, ನಾವು 'I' ಮತ್ತು 'MEs' ಅನ್ನು ಹೊರತೆಗೆಯಲು ಬಯಸುತ್ತೇವೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅದನ್ನು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾದಷ್ಟು ಕಡಿಮೆ ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕಗೊಳಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ

I want you to take this sentence, change it into the passive voice, and put it in the comments.
