recent trip that we took to Italy where we were struggling to find the phrases to be polite.

So today we're going to talk about phrases in English that you can use in various settings like

a restaurant or a store when you're interacting with people who work for the restaurant or store,  

how to be polite, how to ask for things, and how to thank people for things. Let's jump right in.

David, one thing I'm thinking about is remember in Rome there was that Suppli shop on our street?

David: Right, I do remember that, yes.

Rachel: It was so popular. There were  always ... Any time of day it was crowded.

David: People were constantly  going in and out, yeah.

Rachel: So we decided okay, obviously we need to eat whatever is in there. (laughs)

David:  Something is going on in there, yeah. Rachel: So one evening I went in,

it was probably like 9:00 or 10:00,  or no [Stoney 00:01:16], well yeah,

maybe it was 9:00 or 10:00, and it was really crowded, and I didn't really know how it

worked. It was just a counter where people  could buy all sorts of deep-fried things-

David: Oh, right. (laughs)

데이비드: 아, 맞아요. (웃음)

Rachel: And, uh, so I told David, "Okay, I'm  going in." so David and Stony were waiting

for me outside, and after like 10 minutes I  came back out, and I said, "I can't do it."

David: 'Cause how it works is  very different, there's not a

line-based system- Rachel: Right, I came out-David: ... in a lot of places like that in Italy.

Rachel: I came out empty-handed. And  what I said was I couldn't do it,

like my Italian skills aren't good enough to  figure out how to butt in. So actually for

Rachel: And then also I was just way too  intimidated to say ... Like in America what

would I say in that situation if it was sort of chaos and there was just a, sort of a group of

like that. What would you say in a situation  like that in America if let's say you're at a

David: I would, I might say, oh yeah,  I think I was next, but and part of,

part of what's interesting is that  as a native speaker you have a whole

range of things that you could say  that have a lot of nuance to them-

David: ... that hopefully we're going  to be able to talk about today in the

podcast. In other words at the deli  counter I might say, oh, I'm sorry,

yeah, I was, I was here, thanks, you, you  know, and play it, play it sort of nice-

Rachel: Mm-hmm (affirmative). David: ... or, you know, um, the

situation might call for being a little bit more pointed just with a subtle intonation maybe.

David: ... yeah, um-

I think we're seeing a difference too between Italy and America. In America like it would

be very orderly, you would be expected  to get into a line and wait your turn,

and in Italy it seems just a  little bit more casual than that.

Whereas in America it seems like you  know if you're approaching a deli counter

and there's already somebody there that  you kind of stand behind them somewhat.

David: Yeah, mm-hmm (affirmative).

Rachel: Or if it's just a couple it's not a big  deal, but as soon as it started getting like

more popular, more people there, then there would really be a sense of a line forming.

David: And I think it ... There was  usually some order to it. I realized,

this is later in the trip where I was a lot  more comfortable, and probably had picked up

David: Right, there were three different  bakeries at the market I think,

David: ... um, there, 'cause there wasn't a line.

Rachel: Which is funny because another  phrase I'm thinking in America that you

could use if this was happening is  you could say like if the person who

is selling whatever starts giving you the  attention, I've definitely seen this happen,

I think she was next. So rather than taking your turn you direct it to whoever had been before you.

David: Yeah, that's a ... Right, that's a good

Rachel: Yeah, exactly. So yeah, so tho- those are things that you could, you could use  

레이첼: ... 먼저였어요.

in, in that situation. Another thing-

David: You could also say oh,

actually I was here first- Rachel: Yeah. David: ... if they start to help the

Rachel: And if you're in a  rush and need to get out,

I think in many cases you would probably  just let that person cut in front you.

David: Well maybe, maybe not.

Rachel: Another thing I was thinking about in this situation is I could've just like as soon

as I sensed, as soon I saw the guy hand a package across the counter to somebody, and I knew he

David: Right, but then that's hard when  you don't know exactly what you want to

Rachel: ... had a question about something, like I

wanted to know is this vegetarian- David: Hmm. Rachel: ... and then I just, I had a hard time

getting their attention. So the moral of the story is you might have to get aggressive sometimes,

and just sort of speak up even if you're not a, exactly sure what to say. If you're in a group

one thing that does stand out is the bread that David got from that vendor in the market in Genoa.

David: Oh man, that was worth  joining the may-lay of people.

Rachel: Yeah, that was worth pushing  through your comfort zone of being

like I'm in a crowd- David: Oh yeah. Rachel: ... of people, I don't know

how this works, I'm going to  try to speak Italian anyway.

David: And also, eh, we learned that the bread in

the Tuscan- the Tuscany Region  they don't use much or any salt-

Rachel: Very good bread. Okay, another  situation that I found myself in was

but I just, I wasn't sure what was polite,  and I didn't know if it would read like do you

David: Hmm.

Rachel: So I was struggling with knowing  how to like phrase that really politely,  

데이비드: 음.

레이첼: 그래서 저는 정말 정중하게 표현하는 방법을 알아내려고 고심하고 있었고,

and I was thinking about how in American  English like you've said there is subtlety,

there is nuance, there are lots of different ways you could ask the same question all with a varying

degrees of formality and politeness. So I've come up with a couple phrases you can use if

David: Right, and this is the way more broad than

highchairs- Rachel: Mm-hmm (affirmative). David: ... and this is great for everything  

레이첼: 으음(긍정). 데이비드: ... 이건 모든 것에 좋습니다.

from a hardware store where you're trying  to say, you, (laughs) you need to pick up  

하드웨어 매장에서 망치를 집어 올려야 할 때나

a hammer, or, you know, a restaurant  wondering if they have a certain dish.

Rachel: Right. Do you have gluten-free  pizza or whatever? David: Yeah.

learn a whole phrase here you could say,  could you tell me where the bathroom is,  

여기서 전체 문구를 배우고 싶다면, 욕실이 어디인지 알려주시겠어요?라고 말할 수 있습니다.

or we often use the word restroom in America, could you tell me where the restroom is?

David: Mm-hmm (affirmative), and  we pointedly don't say toilet.

and you walk up to the bartender, and let's say the bartender is looking at you the whole time

as you're approaching then you could say  could you tell me where the bathroom is?  

욕실이 어디인지 알려줄 수 있냐고 말할 수 있는 것입니다.

But if the person's not looking at you and  you need to get their attention first it's-

하지만 그 사람이 당신을 쳐다보지 않고 있고 당신이 먼저 그들의 주의를 끌어야 하는 경우에는-

David: Mm-hmm (affirmative).

Rachel: ... it's, it's not that polite to  just blurt your question expecting that

they will look up at you. I think it's  more polite to start with pardon me,

Rachel: ... you can ask the question. I was also thinking about walking into a store, and needing

to get some diapers for Stoney. I didn't know how to say that, I would just walk in and say,

like, diapers? (laughs) My Italian skills were really pretty bad. But people out there who are

listening, their English stil- skills are pretty  good, so let's, let's work with some phrases here.  

듣고 계신 분들은 영어 실력이 꽤 좋으실 테니, 여기 몇 가지 문구를 연습해 볼까요.

So if you walk into a store and you see a clerk you could say, Could you tell me where hmm-hmm-hmm  

그러니까 가게에 들어가서 직원을 보면, "hmm-hmm-hmm이 어디에 있는지 알려주시겠어요?"라고 말할 수 있는 거죠.

is, or are? Could you tell me where diapers are?  Could you tell me where the baby food aisle is?

기저귀가 어디 있는지 알려주시겠어요? 유아식 매장이 어디인지 알려주시겠어요?

David: Mm-hmm (affirmative). Rachel: Or you could also just say,  

데이비드: 음-응(긍정). 레이첼: 아니면 그냥

Do you have diapers, and I've also thought  you could say, Do you guys have diapers?

기저귀 있어요?라고 물어도 돼요. 기저귀 있어요?라고 물어도 된다고 생각해요.

David: Hmm.

Rachel: Guys, it seems really  casual, but we do use it in  

데이비드: 음.

레이첼: 여러분, 아주 캐주얼한 것 같지만 우리는

these settings sometimes to separate like  you the individual from you the store.

가끔 이런 상황에서 개인과 가게를 구분하기 위해 이걸 사용해요.

David: Yeah, I think that's ...  Uh, we use that a lot. Rachel: Do  

데이비드: 네, 제 생각엔... 저희는 그것을 많이 사용해요. 레이첼:

you guys have double A batteries? David: Do you guys have cold beer?

여러분 배터리 A형 2개 가지고 계신가요? 데이비드: 차가운 맥주 있어요?

Rachel: Right. Another thing that I've  thought about, you know, do you guys have,  

레이첼: 그렇죠. 제가 생각해 본 또 다른 것은 , 여러분이 물건을 가지고 있는지, 운반하는지에 대한 질문입니다.

you could also say do you guys carry,  and that's interesting because, you know,  

흥미로운 점은,

we think of the word to carry as like to pick  up and walk with something, but it, we also use  

우리는 '운반한다'는 단어를 무언가를 집어 들고 운반하는 것으로 생각 하지만,

it for stores a lot to mean is this something they sell. Do you guys carry baby wipes? Do you  

매장에서도 '무언가를 판매한다'는 의미로 많이 사용하기 때문입니다. 아기 물티슈도 가지고 다니시나요?

guys carry baby food? Do you guys carry organic milk? Or you could also say do you guys sell.

여러분, 이유식도 팔아요? 유기농 우유를 판매하시나요? 혹은 "판매하시나요?"라고 물어볼 수도 있습니다.

David: Mm-hmm (affirmative).

데이비드: 음-응(긍정).

Rachel: Do you guys sell  pre-made, pre-washed salad bags,  

레이첼: 미리 만들어지고, 미리 씻겨진 샐러드 백이나

salad mix (laughing) bags? I'm just trying to think of nice things that someone might sell.

샐러드 믹스(웃음) 백을 판매하시나요? 저는 누군가가 팔만한 좋은 물건이 무엇인지 생각해 보려고 할 뿐입니다.

David: (laughs) Those salad bags.

데이비드: (웃음) 저 샐러드 백이에요.

Rachel: (laughs) They're so convenient, you don't

have to wash- David: That's- Rachel: ... the lettuce.

David: ... terrific.

Rachel: And then if they say, you know,  they'll usually say yes, it's in aisle eight,  

데이비드: ... 훌륭하죠.

or whatever, or yes, it's down here. If they  don't say that, if they just say yeah, we do,

then you would then say okay, where are they? But I think it's very unlikely that if you walk

Rachel: ... and it's your turn.  So rather than just saying a half

pound of thin sliced honey ham you  could say, I would like, I'd like,  

얇게 썬 허니햄 반파운드를 주문하는 대신 , 허니

I'd like a half pound of honey ham,  or you could say, could I please have.

햄 반파운드를 주세요라고 하거나, 주세요라고 할 수 있습니다.

David: Mm-hmm (affirmative).

데이비드: 음-응(긍정).

Rachel: Could I please have a  half pound of thinly sliced honey  

레이첼: 얇게 썬 허니햄 1파운드 반 주세요

ham? David: Uh, we also say I'll take. Rachel: Mm-hmm (affirmative), I'll take  

? 데이비드: 어, 우리도 '내가 가져갈게'라고 말해요. 레이첼: 음-음(긍정),

a half pound of thin sliced honey  ham. David: Mm-hmm (affirmative). 

얇게 썬 허니햄 1/2파운드로 할게요 . 데이비드: 음-응(긍정).

Rachel: So there are three phrases that you  can use that just putting those few extra  

레이첼: 그러니까,

words in front of what you want makes it a more polite interaction. And now let's say someone,  

원하는 내용 앞에 몇 마디만 더 덧붙이면 더 정중한 상호작용이 가능해지는 세 가지 문구가 있는 거예요. 그리고 이제 누군가가

they hand you the honey ham, or they've just told you where diapers are, then you can,  

당신에게 꿀햄을 건네주거나 기저귀가 어디 있는지 알려줬다면,

you can thank them. There are several  ways that you can say thank you.

당신은 그들에게 고맙다고 말할 수 있습니다. 감사함을 표현하는 방법은 여러 가지가 있습니다.

David: Mm-hmm (affirmative). Rachel: Thanks so much.

David: Yeah, and this is something that I  really struggled with when we were in Italy

because I knew how to say thank you, but  there's so m- so much more you can imply.

I have a whole range, we have a  whole range of things we could say.

저는 말할 수 있는 게 아주 다양하다는 거예요.

Rachel: Right.

David: Thanks so much, I really appreciate  

레이첼: 그렇죠.

데이비드: 정말 고맙습니다. 정말 고맙습니다.

it- Rachel: Mm-hmm (affirmative). David: ... that was so kind of you,  

레이첼: 으음(긍정). 데이비드: ... 정말 친절하셨어요.

that meant the world to me, there's all these different variations on what we could say.

그게 제게는 세상과 같았어요. 우리가 말할 수 있는 말에는 이렇게 다양한 변형이 있었죠.

Rachel: Yeah, that meant the  world to me would be like okay,  

레이첼: 그렇군요. 그 말은 저에게 세상이

this person really helped you out. Like let's say I don't know, you're down-

정말 도움이 되었다는 뜻이었어요. 예를 들어, 내가 모른다고 가정해 보죠, 당신이 쓰러졌다면-

David: Well you have a flat tire-

데이비드: 글쎄, 당신은 타이어가 펑크났고-

Rachel: Yeah.

David: ... and somebody comes along and  helps you change your tire- Rachel: Right. 

레이첼: 그렇죠.

데이비드: ...그리고 누군가가 와서 타이어를 교체하는 데 도움을 주죠. 레이첼: 그렇죠.

David: ... oh, that meant  the world, thank you so much.

데이비드: ... 오, 정말 고맙네요.

Rachel: Or let's say someone's giving  you directions, you're totally lost,  

레이첼: 아니면 누군가가 당신에게 길을 안내해주고, 당신이 완전히 길을 잃었을 때,

you could say that's so  helpful, thank you so much.

그게 정말 도움이 된다고, 정말 고맙다고 말할 수 있어요.

David: Or we say thanks a million.

데이비드: 아니면 정말 고맙다고 말해요.

Rachel: Mm-hmm (affirmative), which they, they say in, in Italy too, remember? David: Yeah, right. 

레이첼: 음-음(긍정), 이탈리아에서도 그렇게 말해요, 기억나? 데이비드: 그렇죠.

Rachel: Grazie mille. Well now we know next time  we travel we can sort of think of the phrases that  

레이첼: 고맙습니다. 이제 우리는 다음에 여행을 갈 때

we use a lot in English to be polite, and we can learn those in the language rather than, you know,  

공손하게 말할 때 영어로 많이 사용하는 문구를 생각해 보고, 그 문구를 언어에서 배울 수 있습니다. 예를 들어,

we really didn't do a great job preparing before we left on ... Like I started learning Italian,  

출발하기 전에 준비를 제대로 하지 않았다면... 저는 이탈리아어를 배우기 시작했지만,

but it was more conversational, and it  was like I want this, I would like that,  

더 대화적이었고, 이걸 원하고, 저걸 원하고,

and it wasn't so much thank you so much, or could you please tell me where blah-bity-blah is.

David: Mm-hmm (affirmative).

Rachel: So, but hopefully this has  helped the people out there thinking

about different phrases that you can  use in English to add another level of  

politeness when you're interacting with  somebody at a store, or at a restaurant,
