He’s well-built, with broad shoulders.

그는 넓은 어깨에 체격이 좋다.

He’s very muscular.

그는 굉장히 근육질이다.

‘Well-built’ means big, but big because of muscle, not fat.

'Well-built'는 몸집이 크지만 뚱뚱한 것이 아니라 근육질이라는 것을 뜻합니다.

The opposite of well-built is ‘skinny’.

'well-built'의 반의어는 바로 'sknny'입니다.

You can say ‘He’s very muscular’ or ‘He’s very muscly’.

여러분은 '그는 굉장히 근육질이다'를 두 가지 형용사 'muscular', 'muscly'로 표현할 수 있습니다.

They have the same meaning.

둘이 같은 뜻입니다.

There are other ways to say the same thing; for example, ‘He looks strong.’

또 다르게 이야기할 수 있습니다. 예를 들어, '그는 강해보인다'고도 표현할 수 있습니다.

She’s in good shape.

그녀는 몸매가 좋다.

She has an athletic physique.

그녀는 운동선수 같은 체격을 가졌다.

‘She’s in good shape’ has the same meaning as ‘She’s fit.’

'She's in good shape'는 'She's fit'과 같은 말입니다.

‘Fit’ describes someone who exercises regularly and is very strong.

'Fit'은 규칙적으로 운동하고 튼튼해 보이는 사람을 묘사할 수 있습니다.

Conversationally, in British English, ‘fit’ means ‘attractive’.

대화 상황에서 영국 영어로 'fit'은 매력적이라는 뜻이 있습니다.

It can be used for men and women.

'fit'은 남성, 여성 모두에게 사용할 수 있습니다.

The word ‘physique’ means the shape and condition of your body.

명사 'physique'는 신체의 모양, 상태를 뜻합니다.

‘Physique’ is most often used with positive adjectives to describe someone who is strong,

'physique'는 튼튼한 사람을 묘사할 때 긍정적인 형용사와 함께 자주 쓰입니다.

or who has an attractive body.

또는 매력적인 몸매를 가진 사람을 묘사할 때 사용합니다.

For example, the collocations ‘muscular physique’ and ‘strong physique’ are

예를 들어, 근육질 몸, 튼튼한 몸이

common.

흔한 표현입니다.

He’s skinny.

그는 말랐다.

He has a slight build.

그는 가녀리다.

What’s the opposite of ‘fat’?

'fat(뚱뚱한)'의 반대말은 무엇일까요?

Actually, there are several words.

사실 여러 가지 단어가 있습니다.

‘Thin’ is the basic word.

'Thin'이 일반적인 단어이고요

‘Slim’ is similar; it means ‘thin and attractive’.

'Slim'은 비슷하지만 thin과 달리 매력적이라는 뉘앙스가 있습니다.

‘Skinny’ is a more negative word.

'skinny'는 좀 더 부정적인 뉘앙스가 담겨 있습니다.

It suggests that someone is *too* thin.

어떤 너무 마른(too thin) 사람이 있어요.

If you say that someone is skinny, it means you think they should eat more.

여러분이 그 사람은 skinny하다고 말하면 그 사람은 밥을 더 많이 먹을 필요가 있어 보이는 겁니다.

Your ‘build’ is the shape of your body: whether you’re broad or thin, whether you’re

명사 'build'는 몸의 모양을 뜻합니다. 당신의 몸집이 크든 작든

muscular or not, and so on.

근육질이든 아니든 기타 등등 사용할 수 있는 단어입니다.

You can use many different adjectives with ‘build’.

여러분은 명사 'build'를 다양한 형용사와 같이 사용할 수 있어요.

Common ones are ‘medium build’, ‘slim build’, ‘proportionate build’ and ‘stocky

'중간 체격(medium build', '날씬한 체격(slim build), '적당한 체격(proportionate build), 그리고 'stocky build' 조합이 많이 사용됩니다.

‘Stocky’ means big or wide, usually with muscle rather than fat.

He’s overweight.

He has a gut.

‘Overweight’ is a more indirect word than ‘fat’, although neither is polite if you

are talking directly to someone.

A gut means a big stomach.

명사 'gut'은 큰 복부를 의미합니다.

You might use it to describe someone who has a lot of extra weight on their stomach.

뱃살만 과도하게 나온 사람을 묘사할 때 사용할 수 있는 단어입니다.

You could also say ‘He has a big belly’, which has the same meaning.

이밖에도 '그는 뱃살이 많이 나왔다(He has a big belly)'도 같은 표현입니다.

He has chiselled features, with high cheekbones.

그는 광대뼈가 도드라지고 조각 같이 생겼다.

He has very well-defined facial features.

그는 뚜렷한 이목구비를 가졌다.

This is a chisel.

이것이 '치즐(끌)'입니다.

It’s a tool which is used to carve stone, for example to make a sculpture or statue.

조각이나 조각상을 만들기 위해 돌을 깎을 때 쓰는 도구입니다.

‘Chiselled features’ means that someone’s facial features are very attractive and clearly-defined,

'Chiselled features'는 얼굴이 굉장히 매력적이고 윤곽이 뚜렷하다는 뜻입니다.

like a statue.

조각처럼요.

It’s generally used for men’s faces.

보통 남성의 얼굴을 묘사할 때 쓰이는 표현입니다.

‘Well-defined’ is similar, but can be used for men or women.

'Well-defined'도 비슷합니다. 그렇지만 이 표현은 남녀 모두에게 사용할 수 있습니다.

If your facial features are well-defined, then your cheekbones, jaw, chin and so on

여러분의 얼굴이 well-defined 하다면 광대뼈, 턱 등

have a clear shape.

생김새가 뚜렷하다는 뜻입니다.

This has a positive meaning, although it doesn’t necessarily mean ‘attractive’.

절대적으로 매력적이라는 뉘앙스를 담지는 않지만 어쨌든 긍정적인 뉘앙스를 가진 단어입니다.

He has crow’s feet.

그는 눈가에 주름이 있다.

He has faint wrinkles in his forehead.

그는 이마에 희미한 주름이 있다.

As you get older, you’ll get lines or wrinkles in your face.

여러분이 나이가 들면 얼굴에 주름도 생기겠죠.

Crow’s feet are the patterns of wrinkles you get in the corner of your eyes.

'crow's feet'은 눈가에 생기는 주름입니다.

Wrinkles can be ‘faint’ – light and difficult to see – or ‘deep’.

주름(winkles)은 형용사 '희미한(faint)' 혹은 '깊은(deep)'과 함께 쓸 수 있습니다.

She has dimples when she smiles.

그녀는 웃을 때 보조개가 생긴다.

She has freckles on her nose and cheeks.

그녀는 코와 볼에 주근깨가 있다.

‘Dimples’ here means small holes in your cheeks which appear when you smile.

보조개(dimples)는 웃을 때 볼이 움푹 들어가는 자국을 말합니다.

Not everyone has them.

모두가 가진 건 아니죠.

Although it’s not common, you can use the word ‘dimple’ to refer to similar holes

흔하진 않지만 'dimple(보조개)'를 다른 비슷한 자국을 표현할 때도 사용할 수 있습니다.

in other places.

다른 위치에서 나타날 때요.

For example, some people have a dimple on their chin.

예를 들면 어떤 사람들은 턱에 보조개가 생기기도 합니다.

Freckles are common among people with very light skin.

주근깨는 밝은 피부를 가진 사람들에게 흔하게 나타납니다.

Going out into the sun can make your skin more freckled.

햇빛을 쬐면 주근깨가 더 많이 생기죠

She has a round face, with a high forehead.

그녀는 넓은 이마와 둥근 얼굴을 가졌다.

She has a double chin.

그녀는 이중 턱을 가졌다.

You can use many adjectives to describe the shape of someone’s face, such as: round,

사람 얼굴의 모양을 묘사할 때 다양한 형용사를 사용할 수 있습니다.

thin, symmetrical, long, or square.

예를 들어 둥근 얼굴형, 갸름한 얼굴형, 대칭적 얼굴형, 긴 얼굴형, 사각형

If someone is overweight, they might have a double chin.

과체중인 사람은 이중 턱을 가질 수 있습니다.

He has a goatee.

그는 수염이 있다.

He’s going grey.

그는 흰 머리가 나고 있다.

‘Goatee’ is a common word; it’s a beard which covers your chin and upper lip only.

'Goatee'는 일반적인 단어입니다. 수염 중에서도 턱과 입 위에 나는 것을 뜻합니다.

You can also have a full beard, which covers your whole face and neck.

여러분의 수염이 풍성할 수도 있습니다. full beard는 얼굴 전체와 목 부분까지 났을 때를 지칭합니다.

There are many words for different styles of beard, but most of them are not commonly

수염에 관한 다양한 단어들이 있지만 대부분 흔하게 사용하는 건 아니니까요.

used, except by beard experts.

수염 전문가를 빼고 말이죠.

If you say ‘he’s going grey’, ‘going’ means ‘becoming’.

여러분이 'he's going grey'라고 말할 때 'going'은 'becoming(...해 지다)'를 의미합니다.

You can use ‘go’ in this way for changes in someone’s hair; for example ‘go grey’

헤어 스타일에 관해서 동사 go 를 사용할 수 있습니다. 예를 들어 흰 머리가 나기 시작하다(go grey)

or ‘go bald’.

혹은 머리가 벗겨지기 시작하다 같은 표현을 사용할 수 있습니다.

You can also use it if someone’s face changes colour.

또한 얼굴 색이 바뀔 때도 동사 go를 사용할 수 있어요.

For example ‘She went bright red’ or ‘He went pale when he heard the news’.

예를 들어, 그녀의 얼굴이 새빨개졌다 혹은 그 뉴스를 듣고서 그의 얼굴이 창백해졌다 같은 표현이 있습니다.

He has curly black hair.

그는 검정색의 곱슬머리이다.

She has thick shoulder-length curly hair.

그녀는 어깨 기장의 두꺼운 곱슬 머리이다.

‘Curly’ describes hair with tight curls.

'Curly'는 빠글빠글한 머리를 묘사할 수 있습니다.

What’s the opposite?

반대말은 무엇일까요?

The opposite is ‘straight hair’.

반대는 '직모(straight hair)'입니다.

In the middle, you can have ‘wavy hair.’

중간에 웨이브 머리(wavy hair)가 있습니다.

For length, you can say hair is long, short, medium length, or shoulder length.

길이에 대해서는 길다, 짧다, 중간 기장, 어깨 기장이라고 표현할 수 있습니다.

For very long hair, you might say something like ‘Her hair reached down to her waist’.

완전 긴 머리는 예를 들어 그녀의 머리가 허리까지 닿는다고 표현할 수 있습니다.

He’s bald, with a thick beard.

그는 대머리에 풍성한 수염을 가졌다.

She has long blonde hair.

그녀는 금발의 긴 머리이다.

‘Bald’ only refers to people who have lost their hair, usually because of aging.

형용사 'Bald'는 노화로 인한 탈모만을 지칭합니다.

If someone shaves their hair off, you can say ‘He has a shaved head’.

머리를 전부 민 사람은 'He has a shaved head.'라고 표현합니다.

Hair can be thick or thin; you can use these adjectives for hair on your head, or for facial

hair: beards and moustaches.

When talking about hair, be careful with adjective order.

Adjectives like ‘long’, ‘short’, ‘thick’ or ‘thin’ go before the colour.

긴, 짧은, 두꺼운, 얇은 같은 형용사는 색보다 먼저 와야 합니다.

So, you can have ‘long brown hair’, ‘thick dark hair’, ‘short fair hair’, and so

He has fair hair.

His hair is shaved short at the back and sides, and swept to one side on top.

‘Fair hair’ is similar to ‘blond hair’, but is has a wider meaning.

‘Fair’ just means ‘light’, so it could include light brown hair or dark blond hair.

‘Sweep’ generally means to clean your floor with a broom.

동사 'sweep'은 일반적으로 빗자루로 바닥을 쓸다 라는 뜻이지만

However, you can also use it for hair, especially when you push your hair in one direction.

머리를 묘사할 때는 한 방향으로 머리를 쓸어 올린 것을 의미합니다.

You can sweep your hair to one side, sweep your hair into a ponytail, or sweep your hair

머리를 한 방향으로 쓸어 올리다, 머리를 포니테일로 묶다,

back.

머리를 뒤로 넘기다 등으로 표현할 수 있습니다.
