Hi. I'm Gill from engVid,
0
2054
2406
00:04
and today we have a lesson about two verbs:
1
4485
4673
00:09
"to touch" and "to feel",
2
9371
2816
00:12
and we're going to look at how they are used. They... Because they mean something
3
12328
6012
00:18
very similar, it's to do with the same sort of action of touching or feeling, it's very
4
18340
7660
00:26
easy to get them confused. So sometimes you use "touch", other times you use "feel". So,
5
26000
7930
00:33
I'm going to show a few examples just to illustrate how they are used.
6
33930
6181
00:40
Okay, so let's first have a look at the verb "to touch", and it's an active verb. It's
7
40136
7655
00:47
something you actively do, physically. If you just touch... Touch something like that,
8
47791
6279
00:54
it can be quite a light, brief, a short time, touching. It's not something that you hold
9
54070
7540
01:01
on to. It's short, usually, touch. Or if you just touch someone on the arm to get their
10
61585
7240
01:08
attention or on the shoulder. Okay.
11
68850
3350
01:12
So, here's the first example, then:
12
72200
4174
01:16
"I touched the kettle to see if it was still hot."
13
76399
6130
01:22
And if you're not sure what a kettle is, you boil water in the kettle to make a cup of tea or
14
82554
7446
01:30
coffee, so you boil the water in an electric kettle or on the gas. So: "I touched"-past
15
90000
8020
01:38
tense-"the kettle to see if it was still hot". So, "touched". So, with something that might
16
98020
8220
01:46
be very hot, you don't want to hold your hand on it for too long because you could burn
17
106240
4960
01:51
your hand, so you just touched it lightly like that. So it's a short, quick touch to
18
111200
7710
01:58
see if it's hot. Okay?
19
118910
2650
02:02
And second example:
20
122698
3109
02:06
"If you touch the cat, she might scratch you!"
21
126307
4502
02:10
So it's a warning.
22
130834
1621
02:12
"To scratch", if the cat doesn't like to be touched... Some cats don't like people to
23
132480
6720
02:19
touch them, especially if they're total strangers. Cats are very particular, I think. So if you
24
139200
7970
02:27
touch the cat, be careful, she might scratch you with the sharp claws. So, again, if you
25
147170
11250
02:38
were going to just stroke the cat like that and:
26
158420
4089
02:42
"No, don't stroke the cat. She doesn't like it."
27
162534
3237
02:45
So: "If you touch the cat, she might scratch you! Be careful."
28
165796
3896
02:49
Okay? So it's a sort of light, short time of contact. Okay.
29
169717
7689
02:58
So moving on to "feel", this is also quite an active verb. For example, it's still making
30
178286
10194
03:08
contact like this. For example, this material, like on a blouse or a shirt:
31
188480
7614
03:16
"This material is so silky"-kind of silk-"just feel it!"
32
196119
6427
03:22
Oo, just feel. Oh, lovely. Soft and smooth.
33
202571
4269
03:26
Isn't that nice? So with "feel" you sort of... It sort of suggests a longer time that you're
34
206865
7624
03:34
in contact with what it is that you're feeling. Okay, so: "Just feel it", like that.
35
214489
10177
03:44
And another example:
36
224691
3906
03:48
"I'm feeling around in the dark."
37
228737
3587
03:52
So we're adding a preposition here.
38
232395
2844
03:55
"To feel around in the dark". For example, if you're sleeping in a friend's house and
39
235239
6541
04:01
you've never been there before, you wake up in the middle of the night, you know that
40
241780
5210
04:06
you're not in your own home, it's completely dark and you want to put the light on for
41
246990
6270
04:13
some reason, to see the time or whatever. So, you get out of bed and you're not quite
42
253260
7449
04:20
sure... You want to put the light on, you're not quite sure where it is, so you're doing
43
260709
6411
04:27
this in the dark, feeling around for the wall, trying to find the switch on the wall or find
44
267120
7280
04:34
a lamp, turn on the lamp. You don't know the room, so you're having to feel around. So
45
274400
7289
04:41
it's about stretching out your hand, making contact with things to find your way to where
46
281689
6431
04:48
you're trying to get. So: "I'm feeling around in the dark."
47
288120
5599
04:53
And then for people who shave... I luckily don't have to shave.
48
293719
4668
04:59
Some women do, apparently.
49
299294
1948
05:01
But I shouldn't joke about that because it's not funny. If you shaved you might:
50
301610
10175
05:11
"Feel your face after shaving", to see if it's rough or smooth. Okay?
51
311877
9661
05:21
To see if you... It's a good razor, a good sharp, razor that you've used. Or an electric razor that goes:
52
321631
6471
05:28
"Mmmm", like that sort of sound. So you feel your face after shaving
53
328305
6615
05:35
to see if it's nice and smooth.
54
335131
2313
05:37
So, again, making contact and for quite a long time. Not just touching. Touching would
55
337744
6785
05:44
be like that. But feeling is more like that. Okay.
56
344529
5233
05:51
Okay, so that's "touch" and "feel". And there's one other use of the verb "to feel", a slightly
57
351434
7545
05:58
different way of using it in a kind of more general way to do with how you feel inside
58
358979
8821
06:07
yourself, emotionally or in your head, how you're thinking. Or physically, it can be
59
367800
8729
06:16
physically as well. So if you walk into a room and you say: "It feels cold in here!"
60
376529
8371
06:24
Okay? Just the physical sensation is: "Oo, it's cold. We need to put some heating on."
61
384900
6835
06:31
So that's the physical feeling that you're sort of receiving a signal that the temperature
62
391760
6700
06:38
is low.
63
398460
1287
06:41
But it's also, as I said, kind of in your mind or emotionally, you can say if you're
64
401169
6640
06:47
at a party and some people are behaving in a strange way, they may be having an argument
65
407809
6601
06:54
or something or they're about to have a fight and it makes you uncomfortable, so you would say:
66
414410
7306
07:01
"This situation doesn't feel right."
67
421888
4202
07:06
Okay? Like: "Let's go home or let's go somewhere else. It doesn't feel right."
68
426380
4786
07:11
And that's more the impression you're getting from the atmosphere,
69
431191
4451
07:15
rather than a physical sensation.
70
435783
3468
07:19
Okay, so I hope those three groups of examples are helpful.
