Using English Prepositions - Lesson 6, Part 3 (time) - A good grammar review!

Let's review before we try an exercise.

운동을 시도하기 전에 검토해 봅시다.

The tricky thing is that there can be overlap.

까다로운 점은 겹칠 수 있다는 것입니다.

"During," though, can refer to an entire period.

하지만 "동안"은 전체 기간을 가리킬 수 있습니다.

"During" actually has two uses.

"동안"에는 실제로 두 가지 용도가 있습니다.

It can refer to an entire period

전체 기간

or at some time within a period.

또는 기간 내의 특정 시간을 나타낼 수 있습니다.

For example:

Now, if "during" refers to an entire period,

이제 "동안"이 전체 기간을 의미하는 경우 비슷한 용법으로 "전부"라는

we have to recall one more preposition

전치사를 하나 더 기억해야 합니다

with a similar use: "throughout."

"Throughout" really emphasizes the entire period

"Throughout"은 처음부터 끝까지 전체 기간을 강조합니다

from beginning to end.

We've been talking about periods of time.

우리는 기간에 대해 이야기해 왔습니다.

So which preposition could we use with weekend?

주말에는 어떤 전치사를 사용할 수 있을까요?

In American English there are two common choices.

미국 영어에는 두 가지 일반적인 선택이 있습니다.

We often talk about what we do

우리는 종종 우리가 하는 일

or things that happen

이나

ON the weekend or OVER the weekend.

주말에 또는 주말 내내 일어나는 일에 대해 이야기합니다.

We say:

"On" simply answers the question WHEN?

"On"은 WHEN?이라는 질문에 간단히 대답합니다.

One might also say:

또한 다음과 같이 말할 수도 있습니다.

"Over" also answers the question WHEN?

"오버"는 WHEN?

But this emphasizes that you need the whole period to do something.

그러나 이것은 당신이 무언가를 하기 위해서는 전체 기간이 필요하다는 것을 강조합니다.

You won't finish before the end of that period.

해당 기간이 끝나기 전에 완료되지 않습니다.

Be sure not to confuse two different ways

we use the preposition "over."

우리가 전치사 "over"를 사용하는 두 가지 다른 방식을 혼동하지 않도록 하세요.

Another preposition with more than one use is "in."

한 번 이상 사용되는 또 다른 전치사는 "in"입니다.

The focus so far has been on periods of time.

지금까지 초점은 기간에 있었습니다.

We can say:

우리는 말할 수 있습니다:

I told you that we use "in" with longer periods of time.

우리는 더 긴 시간 동안 "in"을 사용한다고 말했습니다.

"In the month of February" is closest in meaning to...

"In the month of February"는 의미상 다음과 가장 가깝습니다.

What if I say:

Does "in" have the meaning of "during"?

No.

아니요.

And the period of time here is much shorter.

그리고 여기서의 기간은 훨씬 더 짧습니다.

10 minutes.

10 분.

I can use "in" with any amount of time.

"in"은 얼마든지 사용할 수 있습니다.

- A short period of a long period.

"In" can have the meaning of "after."

I know the different uses and the overlap

can be confusing.

like IN the morning, IN the afternoon, IN the evening.
