3 Ways to Sound More like a Native English Speaker - iTalki

So in this episode, we're going to talk about the three ways

that you can sound more like a native English speaker.

You're ready to jump into it.

Let's do it.

So the first way is to observe what

native English speakers say.

Remember it, copy it, take it, and paste it

into your own conversation.

So use those phrases yourself.

So for example, when you run into someone,

a native English speaker, instead

of saying, "How are you?" they might say, "How's it going?"

So, you think, oh I like that phrase,

I'm going to remember that and use it

next time I see a friend.

So next time you run into a friend, you say,

"Hey, how's it going?"

It can be even more immediate than that.

Immediately after you hear someone say a phrase

that you like, repeat it.

They say, "Hey, how's it going?"

You say, "Hey, how's it going?"

You don't want to do this too much, because then it

might sound like you are making fun of them or imitating them,

but in certain situations like greetings, it works just fine.

So copy and paste the phrases that you want to use.

And make sure that they're phrases

coming from native or really fluent English speakers,

so that you're not copying something

that's incorrect, or stilted and unnatural sounding.

This is go natural English, and I want

you to sound like a native.

So number two, ask for feedback on your pronunciation.

A lot of English students learn from a textbook.

And a textbook doesn't teach you the right way to say phrases.

Usually you just learn individual words

and you may not even learn how to say them, let alone saying

words together in a sentence.

But then in real life, we use words in sentences--

or at least in phrases.

So ask for feedback.

And a great way to do this, asking for feedback,

is by working with an online teacher.

They can give you honest and direct and immediate feedback

on your pronunciation and the way

that you're saying words together in a phrase,

or in a sentence.

This is super important.

So ask your online teacher for feedback on your pronunciation

and let them know if you'd like that feedback immediately,

or maybe at the end of your lesson,

so that it doesn't interrupt the flow of your conversation

with your teacher.

Third, you need lots of use.

So use English every day to become more fluent and more

native-live.

Because speaking English is like working out a muscle.

I mean, literally, the sounds in English

work different muscles in your mouth

than the sounds in your native language.

So you have to make sure that you

are comfortable with these sounds

and comfortable with the words that you're using in English.

Comfortable with the phrases, with the way

that you're pronouncing words together.

So use it often.

And another great way to use English often

is to take online lessons.
