Speak English Naturally with WOULD contractions: I'D, YOU'D, HE'D...

Hello. My name is Emma, and in today's lesson, I am going to help you with your pronunciation.

سڵاو. من ناوم ئامایه‌، له‌ وانه‌ی ئه‌مڕۆدا ده‌مه‌وێت یارمه‌تیتدان بده‌م له‌ چۆنیه‌تی ده‌ڕبڕینی وشه‌كان

Today I am going to teach you how to pronounce contractions for the word "would". Okay?

ئه‌مڕۆ فێرتانده‌كه‌م چۆن وشه‌ی "would" له‌كاتی كورتكردنه‌وه‌دا ده‌رده‌بڕدرێت

So, first of all, "would". When do we use "would"? We use it a lot in English. One of

كه‌وایه‌ به‌ر له‌ هه‌موو شتێك، له‌ چیكاتێكدا "would" به‌كار ده‌هێنین؟ ئێمه‌ "would" له‌ ئینگلیزدا زۆر جار به‌كار دێنین

the times in beginner and intermediate levels we use it is when we are at a restaurant.

جاری واهه‌یه‌ ئه‌وانه‌ی له‌ ئاستی سه‌ره‌تا و مامناوه‌ندن به‌كاری دێنن، له‌ كاتێكدا له‌ ڕێستۆرانتێكین

The server will ask you: "Oh, what would you like?" And you would respond:

شاگرده‌كه‌ پرسیارت لێده‌كات "?Oh, what would you like" حه‌زت له‌چیه‌؟ تۆش جوابی ده‌ده‌یته‌وه‌

"I would like pizza.", "I would like chicken.", "I would like tacos.", "I would like coffee." Okay?

"I would like pizza.", "I would like chicken.", حه‌زم له‌ پیتزایه‌، حه‌زم له‌ مریشكه‌ "I would like tacos.", "I would like coffee." حه‌زم له‌ تۆكۆسه‌، حه‌زم له‌ قاوه‌یه‌ باشه‌؟

Now, the problem is... "Would"... This is all correct grammar-wise, but many, many students

ئێستا، كێشه‌كه‌ ئه‌مه‌یه‌، "Would" ئه‌مانه‌ هه‌مووی راستن له‌ رووی رێزمانه‌وه‌، به‌ڵام زۆر زۆر له‌ قوتابیان

have trouble when it comes to pronouncing "would". Okay? The "w" sound is a little difficult,

كێشه‌یان هه‌یه‌ كاتێك ده‌یانه‌وێت وشه‌ی "Would" ده‌رببڕن. ده‌نگی پیتی "w" هه‌نێك قورسه‌

so many students can't pronounce this correctly. Okay?

بۆیه‌ زۆر قوتابی ناتوانن ئه‌موشه‌یه‌ به‌دروستی ده‌رببڕن.

Also, a lot of native speakers, like myself, a lot of Canadians and Americans, we don't

هه‌روه‌ها زۆر كه‌س كه‌ زمانی یه‌كه‌میان ئینگلیزیه‌ وه‌ك من، وه‌ك زۆر كه‌سی كه‌نه‌دی و ئه‌مریكی

really say "would" that frequently. What we usually say instead are contractions. So,

ئه‌وان به‌ته‌واوی ناڵێن "Would" به‌ودرێژیه‌. له‌ بری ئه‌مه‌ كورتی ده‌كه‌نه‌وه‌.

a contraction is a short form. Instead of saying: "I would", "I'd" has the same meaning.

كورتكردنه‌وه‌، ده‌ربڕینێكی كورته‌ له‌ بری ئه‌وه‌ی بڵێین " ئای ود". "ئاید" هه‌مان مانای هه‌یه‌.

Okay? So this apostrophe here actually means "woul". Okay? So this means there are all

كه‌وایه‌ ئه‌م فاریزه‌یه‌ لێره‌دا، له‌ ڕاستیدا مانای "woul" ده‌دات

ئه‌مه‌ له‌بری هه‌موو ئه‌و پیتانه‌ی كه‌ ونن، به‌ڵام له‌راستیدا پێوسیتمان پێیان نیه‌. كورتكردنه‌وه‌ زۆر زۆر باوه‌ له‌ قسه‌كردنی ئینگلیزیدا

these missing letters, but we don't actually need them. Contractions are very, very common

in spoken English. Not writing, but in speaking, we use them a lot. Okay? So, if you want to

له‌ نوسیندا نا، به‌ڵكو له‌ قسه‌كردندا ئێمه‌ زۆر به‌كاری دێنین

sound more Canadian or more American, you should use contractions.

كه‌وایه‌ گه‌ر ده‌ته‌وێت ده‌ربڕینه‌كانت زیاتر له‌ كه‌نه‌دی یان ئه‌مریكی بچێت، واباشه‌ كوركردنه‌وه‌ به‌كاربێنیت

So, let's look at some of these contractions. So: -"What would you like? What would you

كه‌وایه‌ با سه‌یری چه‌ند كورتكردنه‌وه‌یه‌ك بكه‌ین: "?What w ould you like" (حه‌زت له‌چیه‌؟)

like to order?" -"I'd like some tea." Okay? So, let's start with that. I want you to repeat

حه‌زت لێیه‌ داوای چی بكه‌ییت؟ حه‌زم لێیه‌ داوای چا بكه‌م. یاڵا با له‌گه‌ڵ ئه‌مه‌دا ده‌ستپێبكه‌ین، ده‌ مه‌وێت له‌دوای من بیڵێنه‌وه‌

after me. "I'd", "I'd". And again, this means "I would", "I'd". So it almost sounds like

"I'd", "I'd" ئه‌مجاره‌ش بیلێنه‌وه‌ ئه‌مه‌ مانای "I would" ده‌دات.

كه‌وایه‌ هه‌میشه‌ ده‌ڕبڕینه‌كه‌ی وه‌كو( وشه‌ی eye كه‌ به‌مانای چاودێت) حه‌زم له‌ بڕێك چایه‌

"eye-de". "I'd", "I'd like some tea. I'd like some tea."

Now, maybe you're talking about... To your friend. Okay? In this case, if you want to

ره‌نگه‌ تۆ ده‌رباره‌ی هاوڕێكه‌ت قسه‌ بكه‌یت، له‌و كاته‌دا گه‌ر تۆ بته‌وێت

say: "You would like tea", you can say: "You'd", "you'd". So, again: "You-de", "you'd". "You'd

بڵێیت: تۆ حه‌زت له‌ چایه‌ "You would like tea" ده‌توانی بڵێیت "You-de"

تۆ حه‌زت له‌ چایه‌كه‌ "You would like some tea" تۆ حه‌زت له‌ بڕێك نانه‌ "You'd like some bread." "You'd enjoy going to the beach." تۆ چێژ ده‌كه‌یت له‌ چوون بۆ كه‌نار ده‌ریا

like some tea.", "You'd like some bread.", "You'd enjoy going to the beach." Okay? "You'd".

Now, if you're talking about a boy or a man, we can use the word... Instead of: "he would",

ئه‌گه‌ر ده‌رباره‌ی كوڕێك یان پیاوێك قسه‌ بكه‌ین،( ده‌توانین هه‌مان كورتكردنه‌وه‌ به‌كاربێنین) له‌ ب ری "he would"

ده‌توانین بڵێین "he'd" ڕوونه‌؟. وه‌ تێبینیه‌ك ئه‌مه‌یان له‌راستیدا وه‌ك زه‌رده‌خه‌نه‌یه‌كی گه‌وره‌ وایه‌ به‌بێده‌نگی

you can use: "he'd". Okay? And notice, this one, I actually smiled quite a lot. "He'd".

"He'd like toast.", "He'd like the chicken.", "He'd like a salad." Okay? "He'd".

ئه‌و حه‌زی له‌ نانه‌ (ته‌وست جۆرێكی نانه‌) ئه‌و حه‌زی له‌ مریشكه‌. ئه‌و حه‌زی له‌ زه‌ڵاته‌یه‌.

For women, we would use: "she'd", "she'd". And again, notice my smile, "she'd". "He'd",

بۆ ژنان ئێمه‌ " she'd" به‌كار دێنین. دیسان تیبینی زه‌رده‌خه‌نه‌كه‌ "she'd" "He'd" هه‌مان قافیه‌یان هه‌یه‌

"she'd". They rhyme. "She'd like coffee.", "She'd like coffee.", "She'd like pizza."

كچه‌كه‌ حه‌زی له‌ قاوه‌یه‌ كچه‌كه‌ حه‌زی له‌ پیتزایه‌

Okay? And again, "she'd" means "she would". "She would like pizza.", "She'd like pizza."

باشه‌، دیسان "she'd" مانای "she would" ده‌دات كچه‌كه‌ حه‌زی له‌ پیتزایه‌

Okay, now, if we're talking about us and someone else, we would say: "we'd", "we'd". Okay?

ئێستا ئه‌گه‌ر سه‌باره‌ت به‌ خۆمان یان كه‌سانی تر قسه‌بكه‌ین. ده‌بێت بڵێین "we'd" , "we'd"

And again, there's a big smile on my face. "We'd". "We'd like chicken.", "We'd like poutine.",

دیسان زه‌رده‌خه‌نه‌یه‌كی گه‌وره‌ ده‌كه‌وێته‌ سه‌ر روخسارم ئێمه‌ حه‌زمان له‌ مریشه‌كه‌، ئێمه‌ حه‌زمان له‌ poutine (خواردنێكی كه‌نه‌دیه‌)

"We'd like french fries.", "We'd like hot dogs." Okay? Example of "we'd".

حه‌زمان له‌ فینگه‌ره‌، حه‌زمان له‌ hot dogs (جۆرێكی له‌فه‌یه‌) ئه‌مانه‌ نمونه‌ن بۆ "we'd"

Finally: "they'd". "They'd like". So this is if you have "they would", it becomes "they'd".

له‌ كۆتایدا "they'd" گه‌ر "they would" هه‌بێت ده‌بێته‌ "they'd"

And you'll notice-very simple-all of them are just apostrophe "d". "They'd like chicken.",

تێبینیه‌ك. رون و ره‌وان هه‌موو ئه‌مانه‌ ته‌نها فاریزه‌یه‌ك و پیتی "D"

"They'd like to study English." Okay?

ئه‌وان حه‌زیان له‌ ده‌رسی ئینگلیزیه‌. روونه‌؟

So any time you want to use the word "would", try to replace it with a contraction. It will

كه‌وایه‌، هه‌ركاتێك ویستت وشه‌ی "would" به‌كاربێنیت، هه‌وڵبده‌ له‌باتی ئه‌وه‌ كورتكراوه‌كه‌ی به‌كاربێنه‌

make you sound more like a native speaker. And, you know, especially if you have trouble

ئه‌مه‌ واده‌كات قسه‌كردنت زیاتر له‌ كه‌سێك بچێت كه‌ خۆی ئینگلیزه‌. به‌تایبه‌تی ئه‌گه‌ر كێشه‌ت هه‌یه‌ له‌ ده‌ربڕینی وشه‌ی "would"

with the pronunciation of "would", just adding apostrophe "d" will really help you with your

ته‌نها زیادكردنی فاریزه‌یه‌ك و پیتی "D"

به‌ته‌واوه‌تی یارمه‌تیت ده‌دات بۆ قسه‌كردنی ئینگلیزی

spoken English.
