How to use "ABOUT TO" in English

So, "about to", what does it mean and how do we use it?

كه‌وایه‌ "about to" مانای چیه‌؟ چۆن به‌كاری بێنین؟

Well, let's look at an example to really understand this.

باشه‌، با سه‌یری نمونه‌كان بكه‌ین تا به‌ ته‌واوه‌تی له‌مه‌ بگه‌ین

"I am about to clean my room."

"I am about to clean my room." من ژوره‌كه‌م پاك ده‌كه‌مه‌وه‌

I want you to think for a moment.

ده‌مه‌وێت بۆ ساتێك بیربكه‌یته‌وه‌

Do you think this sentence is about the past, the present, or the future?

پێتوایه‌ ئه‌م رسته‌یه‌ ده‌رباره‌ی رابردوه‌، یان ئێستا یان داهاتوو؟

So: "I am about to clean my room."

"I am about to clean my room." كه‌وایه‌: "من ژوره‌كه‌م پاك ده‌كه‌مه‌وه‌ "

If you said this is about the future, you are correct.

ئه‌گه‌ر وتبێتت ده‌رباره‌ی داهاتوه‌، ئه‌وا راستتگوتوه‌

We use "about to" when we're talking about something we will do very soon in the future.

ئێمه‌ "about to" به‌كاردێنین كاتێك قسه‌ ده‌كه‌ین ده‌رباره‌ی كردنی شتێك له‌ داهاتوویه‌كی زۆر نزیك

We're not talking about far in the future.

ئێمه‌ ده‌رباره‌ی داهاتووی دوور قسه‌ناكه‌ین

We usually use "will" for that.

بۆ ئه‌وه‌ زیاتر"will" به‌كاردێنین

We're talking about very, very soon like in the next five minutes or in the next couple

ئێمه‌ قسه‌ده‌كه‌ین ده‌رباره‌ی زۆر زۆر نزیك، وه‌ك پێنج خوله‌كی داهاتوو، یان دوو خوله‌كی داهاتوو

of minutes.

So, I am about to give you some examples of "about to".

كه‌وایه‌ من هه‌ندێك نمونه‌تان ده‌ده‌مێ ده‌رباره‌ی "about to"

So we have here "I" as a subject: "I am about to", and then after "about to" we have a verb.

كه‌وایه‌ لێره‌دا "I" بكه‌ره‌ ""I am about to" وه‌ دوای "about to" ڤێرب دێت

I put this in colour to help you remember it better.

من ره‌نگم كردوون تا یارمه‌تیت بدات باشتر تێیبگه‌یت

We have: "You are about to" and the verb.

وه‌ ئه‌مه‌یان : "You are about to" دواتردیسان ڤێرب دێت

"She or he is about to" and a verb.

چ كچ بێت یان كوڕ ئینجا "about to" دواتریش ڤێرب

"We are about to" and a verb.

گه‌ر بۆ خۆمان (كه‌سی یه‌كه‌می كۆ )به‌كاری بێنین ئێمه‌ ئینجا "about to" دواتریش ڤێرب

"You guys are about to" and a verb.

ئێوه‌ جه‌ماعه‌ت(كه‌سی دووه‌می كۆ) دواتریش ڤێرب

I've put here: "You guys", which is a bit informal, but when we're talking about a group

لێره‌دا وشه‌ی "You guys" م به‌كارهێناوه‌، ئه‌مه‌ وشه‌یه‌ بڕێك ناره‌سمیه‌، به‌ڵام كاتێك ده‌رباره‌ی گروپێك كه‌س قسه‌ ده‌كه‌ین

of people in an informal situation we can use: "You guys", and: "They are about to"

له‌ كاتێكدا كه‌ پێویستی به‌ ره‌سمیات نه‌بێت، ده‌توانین ده‌سته‌واژه‌ی "You guys" به‌كاربێنین. وه‌ "about to" له‌ گه‌ڵ كه‌سی سێیه‌میش به‌كاردێت

with a verb.

دواتریش ڤێرب دێت

So what can we do with the verbs here?

كه‌وایه‌ ئێمه‌ چی له‌ ڤێربانه‌ ده‌كه‌ین لێره‌دا

Well, if you look up here I have: "I am about to clean my room."

ئه‌گه‌ر ته‌ماشای سه‌ره‌وه‌بكه‌یت، لێره‌دا "I am about to clean my room"

We keep the verb in the infinitive in this case.

ئێمه‌ ڤێربه‌كه‌مان له‌شێوه‌ی "infinitive" داناوه‌ infinitive واته‌ به‌بێ هیچ زیاده‌یه‌كی وه‌ك (ed, ing)

"I am about to study English.",

من وانه‌ی ئینگلیزی ده‌خوێنم

"You are about to listen to me speak.",

تۆ گوێ له‌ قسه‌كانی من ده‌گریت

"She is about to watch TV.",

ئه‌و سه‌یری ته‌له‌ڤیزیۆن ده‌كات

"We are about to go to the gym.",

ئێمه‌ ئه‌چین بۆ هۆڵی له‌شجوانی

"You guys are about to listen to Justin Bieber.",

ئێوه‌ جه‌ماعه‌ت گوێ له‌ جه‌ستن بیبه‌ر ده‌گرن

"They are about to take a shower."

ئه‌وان خۆیان ده‌شۆن

Okay?

So now let's do some together, let's put the verb in the proper form together.

كه‌وایه‌ ئێستا با پێكه‌وه‌ ده‌ستبكه‌ین به‌دانانی ڤێرب ی گونجاو بۆجوابدانه‌وه‌ی پرسیاره‌كان

Okay, so just to remember: When we're talking about "about to", we're talking about the

باشه‌، ته‌نها بۆ بیرهێنانه‌وه‌: كاتێكه‌ ئێمه‌ ده‌رباره‌ی "about to" ده‌دوێین، ئێمه‌ ده‌رباره‌ی داهاتوو قسه‌ ئه‌كه‌ین

future and usually we're talking about either the immediate future, meaning the next 5-10

زۆربه‌ی كات ده‌رباره‌ی داهاتوه‌یه‌كی زۆر نزیك قسه‌ده‌كه‌ین، وه‌ك ده‌رباره‌ی پێنج یا ده‌ ده‌قه‌ی داهاتوو

minutes or the next couple of hours or we can also be talking about soon.

یان دوو كاتژمێری داهاتوو، وه‌ ده‌توانین ده‌رباره‌ی كاتێكی زوو قسه‌بكه‌ین

Soon is different for different people, so I might be talking about in the next couple

كاتێكی زوو، له‌ كه‌سێكه‌وه‌ بۆ كه‌سێكی تر ده‌گۆڕێت، كه‌وایه‌ ره‌نگه‌ ده‌رباره‌ی دوو رۆژی داهاتوو قسه‌بكه‌ین

of days or in the next couple of weeks, but what I really mean is soon. Okay?

یان دوو هه‌فته‌ی داهاتوو، به‌ڵام ئه‌مه‌ به‌ته‌واوه‌تی مانای نزیك ده‌دات. روونه‌؟

So I can say: "I am about to go on vacation", and that means soon I will go on vacation.

كه‌وایه‌ ده‌توانین بڵێین "I am about to go on vacation" ئه‌مه‌واته‌ی ئه‌وه‌یه‌ به‌ زووی ده‌چین بۆ گه‌شت

Okay, so now let's do some examples together.

یالا ئێستا هه‌نێك نمونه‌ پێكه‌وه‌ شیكار كه‌ین

"I am about to _________."

"I am about to _________."

How can we change this verb into the proper form?

چۆن ئه‌م ڤێربه‌ بگۆرین بۆ شێوه‌یه‌كی گونجاو؟

"I am about to..."

"I am about to _________."

Well, this was a trick question.

باشه‌، ئه‌مه‌ پرسیارێكی قورسبوو

You said:

تۆ واتگوت

"call"-and we add a little period here-you are correct.

"call" وه‌ نوقته‌یه‌كی بچوك لێره‌ زیاد ده‌كه‌ین. تۆ راستتكرد

It's very easy to use "about to".

به‌كارهێنانی "about to". زۆر ئاسانه‌

We just need the subject, "am", "about to", and the verb.

ته‌نها پێویستمان به‌ (subject) ئینجا "about to" دواتریش ڤێرب

All right, let's look at the next example together.

زۆرباشه‌، با سه‌یری نمونه‌ی دواتربكه‌ین پێكه‌وه‌

"Ednan is _________ do homework."

"Ednan is _________ do homework."

Now, I want to talk about Ednan in the immediate future, what he's going to do very soon, so

ئێستا، ده‌مه‌وێت ده‌رباره‌ی عه‌دنان قسه‌بكه‌م له‌ داهوتویه‌كی زۆر نزیكدا، ده‌یه‌وێت چیبكات به‌زوویی

what can we put here?

لێره‌دا چی دابنێین؟

If you said:

ئه‌گه‌ر گوتبێتت

"about to", you are correct.

"about to" ئه‌وا راستتكردوه‌

"Ednan is about to do his homework."

"Ednan is about to do his homework." عه‌دنان به‌زوویی واجبی ماڵه‌وه‌ی ده‌كات

Okay?

Now, let's do one more: "Jess is about to _________."

ئێستا یاڵا نمونه‌یه‌كی دیكه‌ " ________Jess is about to"

And here we have the verb "study".

لێره‌دا ئێمه‌ ڤێربی "study" داده‌نێین

So, again, very easy.

وه‌ دووباره‌ ئه‌مه‌ زۆر ئاسانه‌

What do we write?

چی بنوسین؟

"Jess is about to

"Jess is about to

study."

"study."

Which means she is going to study soon.

ئه‌مه‌ مانای وایه‌ ئه‌و به‌زووی ده‌ستده‌كات به‌ ده‌رسكردن
