How to use "ABOUT TO" in English

So, "about to", what does it mean and how do we use it?

자, "about to" 무슨 의미이고 어떻게 사용할까요?

Well, let's look at an example to really understand this.

글세, 이것을 이해하기 위해서 예시를 보겠습니다.

"I am about to clean my room."

"나는 막 내 방을 청소 할 참이다."

I want you to think for a moment.

잠시 생각해보세요.

Do you think this sentence is about the past, the present, or the future?

이 문장에 대해서 과거, 현재 또는 미래를 생각했나요?

So: "I am about to clean my room."

그러니깐, " 나는 막 내 방을 청소 할 참이다." 는

If you said this is about the future, you are correct.

당신이 만약 미래에 대해서 말하셨다면, 맞습니다.

We use "about to" when we're talking about something we will do very soon in the future.

우리는 "about to" 를 미래에 바로 곧 무언가 할 때에 대해서 사용합니다.

We're not talking about far in the future.

먼 미래에 대해서 말하는게 아닙니다.

We usually use "will" for that.

보통 "will"로 사용합니다.

We're talking about very, very soon like in the next five minutes or in the next couple

정말 아주 가까운 마치 5분후 나 몇 분후에 대해서 말합니다.

of minutes.

So, I am about to give you some examples of "about to".

그럼, " about to" 의 예시를 좀 드려볼게요.

So we have here "I" as a subject: "I am about to", and then after "about to" we have a verb.

자, 여기 "I"로서의 주제로 "나는 막~하려고 한다" 가 있습니다. 그리고나서 그 후에 동사가 있습니다.

I put this in colour to help you remember it better.

기억하기 좋으시라고 색깔를 넣었습니다.

We have: "You are about to" and the verb.

"너는 막~할 참이다" 그리고 동사가 있고요.

"She or he is about to" and a verb.

"그녀는 또는 그는 막~하려고 한다." 하고 동사

"We are about to" and a verb.

"우리는 막 ~ 할 참이었다." 그리고 동사.

"You guys are about to" and a verb.

"여러분은 막 ~하려고 한다. 그리고 동사.

I've put here: "You guys", which is a bit informal, but when we're talking about a group

여기에 "You guys"를 넣어봤습니다. 이건 좀 비격식인데 우리가 사람들끼리

of people in an informal situation we can use: "You guys", and: "They are about to"

사석에서 이야기할 상황일때 "You guys"를 씁니다. 그리고 "그들은 막 ~하려고 한다."

with a verb.

동사랑 함께요.

So what can we do with the verbs here?

그러면 동사하고 뭘 여기에다가 같이 할 수있을까요?

Well, if you look up here I have: "I am about to clean my room."

여기 보시면 " 나는 막 내 방을 청소할 참이다." 가 있어요.

We keep the verb in the infinitive in this case.

이 경우에는 동사원형에 동사를 씁니다.

"I am about to study English.",

"나는 막 영어공부를 하려던 참이다."

"You are about to listen to me speak.",

"너는 내 말을 막 들을 참이다."

"She is about to watch TV.",

"그녀는 막 TV를 보려고한다."

"We are about to go to the gym.",

"우리는 막 헬스장에 가려던 참이다."

"You guys are about to listen to Justin Bieber.",

"너는 막 저스틴비버를 들을 참 이었다(?)" [무슨 말하는지 본인도 모르는것 같음]

"They are about to take a shower."

"그들은 막 샤워를 하려고 하는 참이다."

Okay?

알겠죠?

So now let's do some together, let's put the verb in the proper form together.

자 그럼, 이제 같이 해봅시다, 적절한 형식에 동사를 넣어서 말이죠.

Okay, so just to remember: When we're talking about "about to", we're talking about the

좋습니다, 그냥 기억하세요. 우리가 "about to"에 대해서 이야기할때

future and usually we're talking about either the immediate future, meaning the next 5-10

미래 그리고 보통 가까운 미래도 말한다는것을, 의미가 5분에서 10분 후에

minutes or the next couple of hours or we can also be talking about soon.

또는 몇 시간 후 또는 곧, 이내의 의미로도 사용할 수있습니다.

Soon is different for different people, so I might be talking about in the next couple

곧,이내라는 건 사람마다 다른긴 한데요, 몇 일이나 몇 주후 에 대해서 말할 수있습니다.

of days or in the next couple of weeks, but what I really mean is soon. Okay?

그렇지만 제가 말하는건 곧, 이내 입니다. 알겠죠?

So I can say: "I am about to go on vacation", and that means soon I will go on vacation.

그래서 말합니다."I am about to go on vacation" 는 곧 나는 휴가때 갈것이다를 의미합니다.

Okay, so now let's do some examples together.

그럼, 이제 몇 가지 예시 좀 함께 봅시다.

"I am about to _________."

How can we change this verb into the proper form?

이 동사를 어떻게 바꿀 수 있을까요? 적절한 형식으으로 말이죠.

"I am about to..."

Well, this was a trick question.

이건 속임수가 있는 질문이었네요.

You said:

"call"-and we add a little period here-you are correct.

당신이 "call"라고 말하면 그리고 기간을 여기 조금 더해서한다면요 . 정답인거에요.

It's very easy to use "about to".

참 쉽죠? "about to" 쓰는거 ㅇㅇ

We just need the subject, "am", "about to", and the verb.

그저 주어와. " am", "about to", 그리고 동사가 필요합니다.

All right, let's look at the next example together.

좋습니다. 다음 예시를 함께 봅시다.

"Ednan is _________ do homework."

"엔넨은 _______ 숙제 한다."

Now, I want to talk about Ednan in the immediate future, what he's going to do very soon, so

이제, 엔넨의 가까운 미래에 그가 바로 곧 뭘 할 지 대해서 말하고 싶습니다.

what can we put here?

여기에다가 뭘 넣을까요?

If you said:

당신이 만약에

"about to", you are correct.

" 어바웃...

투.."라고 말한다면

정→

답↗입니다.

"Ednan is about to do his homework."

"엔넨은 그의 숙제를 하려던 참이다."

Okay?

Now, let's do one more: "Jess is about to _________."

자. 하나 더 해 봅시다. " 제시가는 막 ~하려던"

And here we have the verb "study".

"study" 동사가 있습니다.

So, again, very easy.

다시 말하지만, 정말 쉬워요.

What do we write?

뭐라고 쓰죠?

"Jess is about to

"제시카는 막

study."

공부하려던 참이다.

Which means she is going to study soon.

이건 그녀가 공부를 곧 할거란걸 의미하죠.
