British Bitesize Lesson #4: TIRED

hello and welcome to number four of 25

Whiteside lessons i'm doing especially

as my Christmas gift to you

so today's bite-sized lesson is all

about the word tired now the reason I

chose this word is because many of my

students mispronounce it so most of my

students will take note of the R in

the middle of this word and say ti red

I'm very very tired tired but in British

English we don't pronounce the R so we

say tired we do this kind of /j/ sound

in the middle but we don't curl in to an /r/

at all

I'm tired tired so to be tired

obviously is to feel like you need to

sleep or to be worn out but you can also

be tired of something so this means that

you have become bored of something or

disinterested in something so we would

say I'm tired of you i'm tired of

walking

I'm tired of learning algebra so I'm

tired of something or someone

hopefully you're not tired of me oh we

can also describe something as tired so

i could say that's tired old film or

that tired coat meaning that the coat

all the film is worn and past is best so

that old coat that i had for maybe 10

years that's faded with holes in it i

might say it's a tired old coat was a

tired-looking coat if we are extremely

tired then we might say I'm dog tired

I'm dog tired or I'm dead tired and this

means like I said extremely tired or

exhausted i'm dead tired i was dead

tired yesterday I was dog tired last

night and finally you may hear someone

used the phrase I'm sick and tired i'm

sick and tired

this doesn't mean that they're ill it

means that they're completely fed up and

bored with whatever it is so I'm sick

and tired of telling you to do the

washing up i'm sick and tired of telling

you to do your homework

I'm sick and tired of hearing about your

problems so tired tired of something or

someone to be dog-tired dead tired or

sick and tired of something
